Good to see. The previous games, C&C and RA, have also been freely available for some time now.

It's always amused me that Command & Conquer is probably the most popular franchise among PC-types that I know next to nothing about.  Even if I don't wind up getting into it, I need one of you lot to clue me in a bit at some point, so I can up my nerd-cred. :p

They are classic-style base building RTSs. Try out the first C&C.  I think it remains the best of the series and is one of my favorite games ever, especially the singleplayer campaigns and story. It's free now, so you can't really go wrong. :p

Re: C&C: TS + Firestorm Exp. = Freeware
C&C is honestly the purest of base-building RTSs.  You have one resource, one type of collector unit, and a bunch of combat units and buildings to blow the **** out of the other guy.  Great story because there are only two factions to share the spotlight, and both are fairly well developed.

all factions in any C&C are different in strategy but well balanced for a good fight

C&C1 didn't have power plants?

I don't really count power as a resource, due to how it's not really collected.  It did have power plants.

I'm not a huge RTS player, but I did greatly enjoy Age of Empires 2 and Age of Mythology, so maybe I'll give it a shot at some point.  One thing I am unclear on, though, is the overall chronology of the series.  I know that the Red Alert games are some sort of spinoff/alternate universe from the main series, but is it necessary to slot them in somewhere?

Re: C&C: TS + Firestorm Exp. = Freeware
Depends.
Spoiler:
The Soviet ending to RA1 has Kane appearing at the end and declaring "a new age is upon us".  So either yes, same continuity, or no, Easter egg.

Re: C&C: TS + Firestorm Exp. = Freeware
The continuity between series is a bit FUBAR.

Originally, Red Alert was a prequel to the Tiberium series.

Then Red Alert 2 came out, and went in an entirely different, cheesy direction. Nonetheless, apparently there was still going to be a connection to Tiberium somehow, or so the original devs claim. (Apparently time travel, Nikolai Tesla, and aliens were involved. Somehow.)

After Westwood was bought out by EA, Red Alert was officially dropped from continuity, making Red Alert and Tiberium into two different continuities. Lots of people still place Red Alert 1 in the Tiberium continuity, since Kane has one scene in it, but it's an amazing one.

As far as i'm concerned EA can eat my hat.

Red Alert, RA2 and 3 all precede c&c.

Also power plants are valid resources.

Total annihilation and numerous others follow the trend.

That and the original Dune are available via Abandonia...

Speaking of which, I picked up Master of Orion the other day. A great game for sure.

the first and second ones were fine, but the third is clearly the worst

There were only two Dune games made, If I understand this properly...

Unless you're stating that you don't care for Master of Orion. Which is fine, I suppose.

...I still need to install C&C sometime - I've just not done so yet.  ;)

To my knowledge, there have been four Dune-related games produced. The first Dune game (developed by Cryo) is a sort of adventure game. Dune 2 (by Westwood) is an RTS, as is Dune 2000 and Emperor: Battle for Dune.

EDIT: Make that five. Cryo did a sort of remake of the first game back in 2000-ish.
