Title: Frostpunk
Post by: Colonol Dekker on September 28, 2017, 01:39:14 am
I caught a rendered cgi promo thing a few months back but this is the first game play I've seen

I'm actually quite interested in it as a concept.

It's out.

I'm very proud by the fact that my city is already 9 days old and not a single person has suffered frostbite.

I'm going to look into this now.

Commendations to your toasty city.

Just finished the Main Quest, and Jeeeeesus, that last week is terrifying.

Spoiler:
I had stockpiled tens of thousands of tons of coal for the generator, and almost 10k food rations, and I still had to redline the Generator until it was mere seconds away from blowing up and my people were still freezing in their homes.

In a city of 580 people, I lost only 50 or so, the vast majority of which were volunteers, who died like heroes, propping up our collapsing mineshafts during
Spoiler:
the BLIZZARD

I went down the path of LAW AND ORDER and I managed to get to the end without going full Big Brother on my freezing populace (the worst thing I did was open a propaganda centre). I am also very proud of the fact that not a single one of my people had to suffer an amputation, for the entirety of the game.

Look at those achievements. Look at them. Benevolent ruler, or what? Eh? Eh?

It's an excellent game.

How do you keep a scientific colony of 45 people (and the only surviving living samples of Earth's flora) alive, while simultaneously sending help to the neighbouring sorry excuse for a city?

You automate the entire colony, and sit on your porch watching your towering robotic minions work.

14 automata just don't give any ****s.

I feel an affinity for London.   I've not loaded this yet,  having noticed London mention in the above achievements in instantly side with London if possible?

Your city is called New London. Old London is...not doing well (which is why they sent you out in the first place). There's a secessionist faction among the refugees who want to return to Old London

"Because London can't have fallen. It just...can't"

You can convince them to stay by raising hope, or by locking them up, but they gain traction if hope is low. And if you don't manage to completely 'defeat' them, they return home, leaving you with a greatly reduced population (and workforce).

Bad End.

Now I want the universe crossover with Fallen London (https://www.failbettergames.com/fallen-london/).

Well, the 'Refugees' scenario has a certain similarity with the Iron Republic.

This time I went down the road of faith. Very interesting variation, with a heavy focus on precise building placement.

On another note, I absolutely adore the endgame timelapse, when you see your city getting built on the background, and the game reads a generated chronicle of it.

AHAHAHAHA!

BOW BEFORE ME, YOU INSIGNIFICANT WORMS! BOW AND HEAR THE VOICE OF TRUTH! FEAST ON THE FLESH OF THE BEASTS OF THE OLD WORLD AND RELISH IN THE BURNING FORGES OF THE NEW!

Did A New Home on hard difficulty. Things got really hairy during the storm, with the mob storming the supply warehouses, but my loyal Faith Keepers pushed the rabble back. In addition, the game got really hard because I failed to explore Tesla City (my scouts were carrying lots of supplies and I didn't want to risk them dying on the electrical forcefields), which meant that I couldn't establish a steam core outpost on-site.

Still pulled it off, though! And, even though the game decided that I crossed some line, I expressly did not deify myself. It was a benevolent theocracy, thank you very much.

Well I got banished a fortnight into it.   Child labour and 24 hour shifts are frowned upon..... as are arctic burial mounds it seems :/

A suggestion: child labour can give you an excellent early-game boost but, when considering the long term, it pays to shill out for a Child shelter and employ the kids as engineer apprentices. If you also go down the lines of Agitators (Order) or Shrines (Faith), you can have fully-staffed workshops working at up to 144% efficiency! Since you have to rush certain techs, this can be invaluable.

A good alternative to spamming the 24-hour shift is signing the Extended Shift law, which allows for 14-hour workdays (6 am to 8 am). This gives you a temporary discontent malus, but you can cancel that at any time by reverting the workday back to the normal 10-hour shift. It's very good to have on mines and workshops. It can also allow you to spam the Emergency Shift more sparingly, when you really really need it.

Also: how on earth did you get enough deaths to warrant a revolution 14 days in?

By the Captain's steel balls, man!

At least put a flapping roof over their heads. Jeez.

Srsly, don't ignore shelter and insulation. As any survivalist will tell you: Shelter>Warmth>>>>>>>>Food and Water.

I was fifteen years army and I agree warm bed and dry feet.  I might be merciful on the next attempt.

Finished it twice by now and wow what an amazing experience.

As said above, that last week especially is completely edge of your seat awesome.

2nd time through I was doing much better and deliberately refused the harsher laws, even faith keepers, and at the end the narrator said finally ..... and yet, i feel we have not crossed the line. :-)

(first playthrough was Order with all out propaganda and guards galore, ... the ending narrator didn't like that, even though I didn't establish "the new order")

Growing up they told no two snowflakes are the same
And every one's a wonder, something not to take in vain
Of mother nature's beauty.
Of the universe at play.
Seems she's abstained from duty, left us here and turned away.

Fingers splintered into kindling and hearts as dark as coal
As heat and hope are dwindling we march towards our goal
Committed to the hymns we sing so after all is told
The generations after us aren't cast into the cold

So burn us in the furnace, let our souls ignite the flame
Use our bones to stoke the embers.
Use our blood to oil the chains.
We are nothing now but engines rending flesh to find a way
And as we fall we know we die to light a brighter day

Every shiver will deliver us deliverance in time
Burn the incense of our innocence and in a sense we thrive
Pray the future that we're building will be worth its weight in lives
So take heed but take no pity
as THE CITY MUST SURVIVE

Just...perfect.
