Title: ULTRA hi-res maps avaliable!
Post by: Galemp on September 08, 2002, 01:00:30 am
One of the bonuses of owning the FS1 DVD is that it came with ultra hi-res textures. Being the wonderful person that I am, I decided to pack them all up and let you have them. Just make sure you have the registry fix here. (http://www.descent-freespace.com/ddn/kb/registry/)

Ultra Hi-res Maps! (http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/fsport/maps.zip) Warning! 8 mb download!

Thats funny I was just thinking about this the other day - of collating all the hi-res textures. Oh well, good work GE. :D

why did you include the orion skins and a few others that were normal resolution,
I wish I had these a while ago, now I've got to redo all my rendering materials

But can they work in Freespace 2?

Beautiful stuff, this will make renderings much nicer - no more oversize pixels staring back at me....

Wait, are these the same hi-res maps that come with the original edition of FS1? Or are they something different?

The fs1 maps have always been a higher res than FS2, look at the vp files. In fs1 the ursa looks much better than is fs2 (in modview, anyway) because of the higher res maps. Compare the Medusa pofs from fs1 and 2.

I got the DVD. I think the music is much better, and the graphics, but other than that, I can't think of anything else.

EDIT: Oh yeah, the afterburner trails.

I`ve seen it as an OEM version with a DVD drive. AFAIK it was never released seperately.

Those Afterburner trails. They were awesome. When you used your afterburners, the engine glow was seriously enlongigated. I looked awesome.

As for getting the DVD. It came with a computer I had with a DVD drive. The thing is awesome. The only problem is when you install Silent Threat, the game looks like ****.

Its not installed, and I don't have enough hard drive left to do it. Also, the afterburner trails won't work for anything but the DVD version. They are hard coded, and aren't coded in the regular fs2 or fs1 games. Sorry guys.

Right, the Silent Threat engine modifications (EMP and leech) remove the trails. I found the flags in the ships.tbl
Code: [Select]
$Trail: 100
$Etrail: 100
but they don't work outside of the FS1 DVD. And mine doesn't work under Windows 2000.

Argh, I'm getting sick and tired of hearing about these afterburner trails! I thinkk it's a hoax by all you FS1 DVD owners! You're trying to pull a fast one on all of us less-blessed peons, but we ain't gonna fall for it anymore! Until I see screenshot-proof that these "trails" exist, I'm not going to believe you!

sheepy - I think the FS2 registry entries are the same as for FS1. The "D3DUseLargeTextures" and "D3DTextureDivider" are, I think, the only ones that are needed. I'm not sure about that, though. It's been a while since I ventured into the registry, and it's been even longer since I fired up FS/FS2, though they've been on my hard drive for ages. So most of this stuff is new to me, like FS2_open and Reciprocity and all that.

GalacticEmperor, thanks for posting these! I can't wait to play through the game again with some really high-res textures!

I have the DVD version, but my DVD drive got messed up quite awhile back ago and haven't gotten another one yet. I use my PS2 to play DVD movies now :D Or I would look up this trails thing for you.

And to the ppl looking for the dvd version you might be able to find the DVD version on ebay. That's where I got mine from.

Ok, I made the changes through RegEdit that Setekh suggested on his tutorial thread. God knows this will help when the players of my upcoming campaign have to go up against another SD Lucifer. Those new maps look damn nice, but I'll have to test them later. Right now, I gotta go work out. A certain lady inspired me to take better care of myself.

My life isn't all Freespace and law school...;7

Ummm...Ok.

I tested the Lucifer in-game with the new hi-res files. I also looked at the FS1 Shivan fighters with the hi-res files in the techroom database.

Ummm...ok. Ok. Ok.

Gimme me a sec here....

After testing these hi-res files, I just have this to say:

WHERE THE HELL IS THE :JAW: SMILIE WHEN I NEED IT????

I have NEVER seen the SD Lucifer look so crisp!

My God, these ships looked AWESOME with the high-res files!!! WHY DIDN'T ANYONE TELL ME ABOUT THIS SOONER!?!?!

Oh, wait...you did. :D

Diamondgeezer, you are truly a saint. Thanks for letting me know about this stuff.

Hey, didn't you and Aldo make some high-res files for some of the Reciprocity mods? Is there a still-working link to any of that stuff? I don't think the Reciprocity website has a working link to it anymore...

There are some reskins in the Reciprocity page. If you mean the ones that got tossed out, I think that's what the COW site is for.

COOOLLLLL!!!!!!  :D

Of course, now I have to go back and make all those minor tweaks I made to the low-res maps again........

Now, all we need are maps of the same standard for the ships from FS2, and we will be cooking!!!!:thepimp:
Title: ULTRA hi-res maps avaliable!
Post by: Galemp on October 29, 2002, 02:10:59 pm
Well, yeah, but the FS2 large ships use tiled textures, not full-ship ones like FS1 did. Making a set of hi-res maps for the Deimos won't be as noticeable. Hi res fighter and bomber maps, though; now there's a challenge.
Title: ULTRA hi-res maps avaliable!
Post by: Raptor on November 05, 2002, 02:01:20 pm
Okay, will someone please tell me how to get these textures working? (game will not run missions now, but the craft show up just fine in modveiw and the tech database:mad: )

I HAVE used that link to get the registery hacks, but I have not got a clue about what it is going on about.:sigh:

Surely the system can cope with these higher Res maps without having to mess with things I dont know anything about!
Title: ULTRA hi-res maps avaliable!
Post by: Solatar on November 05, 2002, 02:46:50 pm
What are your system specs?
Title: ULTRA hi-res maps avaliable!
Post by: Raptor on November 06, 2002, 12:53:50 pm
Operating System: Windows 98
CPU speed: 400 MHz (Fujitsu AMD-K6 3D  if you really want to know)
256MB RAM, with a 32 bit visual.
And Voodoo 3(000, I think), 3Dfx mode

Okay, it is old spec by todays standard, but it does all that I want it to do right now (well, apart from 'Battle of Endor' type things, which run REALLY SLOWLY!)

Any help?
Title: ULTRA hi-res maps avaliable!
Post by: Su-tehp on November 06, 2002, 01:39:09 pm
Just out of curiosity, what kind of comp specs would you need to run a "Battle of Endor" scenario at a decent speed?
Title: ULTRA hi-res maps avaliable!
Post by: Galemp on November 06, 2002, 02:07:30 pm
I think anything over a gig with a 3D card would be fine with maybe a dozen capships in hi-res. But if you want the FORTY-something that was in the BoE and the dozens of fighters flying around, not to mention a space station the size of a small moon... you'd better take your time designing it and make sure you've got at least a 1.5 ghz and <256 megs of RAM.
Title: ULTRA hi-res maps avaliable!
Post by: Sandwich on November 06, 2002, 02:15:41 pm
The problem is that I get the distinct feeling that the FS2 rendering engine, as-is, is simply incapable of handling anywhere near that many ships at a decent framerate.

I've recently played a mission where there were a few fighter/bomber wings, a station, 2 Argos and 2 Anukets (Vasudan gas miners). When pointed in their direction, my framerate would go choppy. But I know of a surety that my comp is perfectly capable of better than that - IWAR2 has proven that wit it's high-poly models.

Thus I am forced to conclude that it is FS2 itself that can't handle BoE scenarios.
Title: ULTRA hi-res maps avaliable!
Post by: Raptor on November 09, 2002, 01:41:10 pm
Okay, my mistake, the game was not running the missions because the weapons.TBL got messed up somehow (haven't got a clue how, and could I find the fault?:mad2: )

Running now though, so I can play around again.

Maps are used, but are knocked down quite harsly, so my Icarus  looks rather, em, bad (when compared to Modviews display)

PS: Where sould i upload stuff to be posted here, or, alternately, is there anyone willing to post stuff for me?

There's no need to. :)  Get yourself a Duron with a Morgan core.  That has the SSE instructions coded into it, so it'll run that DVD just fine.
