Re: A celebration of Freespace
Definitely not! A cruiser up moves to slowly, and anything less than one is as good as dead even as a glancing hit!

Hence, rarely. It's most likely to happen with ships that have thin parts, like the Ravana. (This is theoretical, by the way.)

Its also hard to hit long thin parts using SSLs at long range.
Arguably harder.

But this is way off topic. PICS!

For how many times the Hatshepsut is shown on these screenshots you've had figured someone would have made an HTL model of it by now.

Meaning no ingratitude to the MediaVPs team, but I don't share your opinion here. I don't like how those explosions have debris built in. I prefer the balls-of-fire ones. But am I right in saying that they're only in MV_Advanced? Because I haven't seen them in my game, if I recall correctly.

Actually, I believe that shot was due to pure and absolute luck, not because of any mediavps.

All three were firing, and it looked nice, but by the time I hit the print screen, the first one had stopped.

Missile destroyer I rigged up. Model by Hamano, the Orion Phase 2, up on FSMods, texture replacements done by Jadehawk.

Lvlshotted.

are these custom explosions?

The default explosions don't look that pretty.

picked that up via:

Hmm.

Your explosions look a bit pixelated. You might want to check what happens if you create two new files:

..\Path\To\Freespace2\mediavps\data\tables\mv_fireball-fbl.tbm
..\Path\To\Freespace2\mediavps\data\tables\mv_expl-wxp.tbm

and paste the following text into them:

mv_fireball-fbl.tbm
Code: [Select]
; fireball.tbl
;
; Table file for specifying which filenames are to be used for which explosions
;
;
#Start

$Name: exp04 ; Used for the 4 little explosions before a ship explodes
+Explosion_Medium
$LOD: 1

$Name: WarpMap01 ; Used for the warp in / warp out effect
+Warp_Effect
$LOD: 1

$Name: WarpMap02 ; Used for the KNOSSOS warp in / warp out effect
+Knossos_Effect

Other way is to open mv_effects (?), extract the tables and edit them to have LOD number one on all explosions, but I think this is a faster way... It should make all explosions to use their highest resolution or somesuch.

In fact, I don't remember whether you actually need to do anything about mv_expl-wxp.tbm ot if the settings are already maxed out in the MediaVP's, but better safe than sorry....

That's why my explosions look that way.

They look like retail explosions.

When the new VPs were released a couple weeks ago, I didn't have FS2 installed on this computer.  When I reinstalled, I returned to using these tables.  If the new VPs have different explosions, I haven't seen them.

Nope, those are definitely 3.6.10 MVP explosions. And I really like the built-in debris. Looks neat.

Nice General Battuta, you got a BP badge.

And as for the explosion, maybe it's just me but I find them remarkably similar to Inferno explosions.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
I do think the BP badges are rather striking.

One of my reasons for liking the new explosions is that it makes blob turret impacts look more intimidating. Suddenly there are chunks flying everywhere.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
Blob turrets ought to be given teeth, just like in PI, although in there, that comes at the cost of lots of spamming.

Are these new explosions activated by default just by selecting the new mediavps?  If so, I must be missing them because of the edited tables I am using...perhaps I should drop those and see how it looks?

Some more screenies from ST:R...

And I saw this, and I just had to take a screenshot:

Apparently the THT disabled the Seraphim, and was slowly poking it to death.

Apparently it's also a low-poly Orion with the turrets firing backwards too. :p
