Post by: Alikchi on June 04, 2002, 06:46:41 pm
Basically I'll use this thread to post up what I should be putting on the website, like screenshots, general information, story teasers, and blah. I'll put it up on the site eventually, I think. Comments are very welcome :)

Weapons and ships are being finalized.

The NTF Augeas:

The model is still in final texturing and POF data, etc, by Woomeister. It's designed to be a standoff/general purpose fighter (load it with Phoenix Vs) that's fairly weak close in as it's quite slow (only 60 m/s) and has weak shields + hull, but has good maneuverability and the capacity to carry lots of weapons.

The NTF Gryphon:

The NTF's elite forces raid the GTVA's OpEval courses deep inside GTVA space in an audacious attempt to steal the schematics for the GTF Perseus. The result: The NTF Gryphon, an extremely fast yet unmaneuverable interceptor that balances the unmaneuverability with heavy firepower in the form of long-range missiles. Whether this model will ever be completed and turned into a ship is unknown, we're currently using Aldo's Valkyrie II/Stentor model.

The NTF Ragnarok:

Probably will never be done, but presumably an NTF space superiority fighter.

NTF Liche:

Again, probably never be done, but it is the NTF's very own stealth fighter, although it is MUCH heavier than the Pegasus, as you can see.

FS1 tech -

GTF Apollo: Still used as a raining craft (and punishment craft). Thrown into combat only in the direst situations.

GTB Athena: "Wild Weasel" craft, e.g. destroys AAA and flak turrets before heavy bombers arrive. Upgrade kits released by Dynamic Metamer during Reconstruction give this ship increased maneuverability, shielding, and payload capacity.

GTF Valkyrie: Standard interceptor. The Perseus hasn't even been invented yet and won't be until the main FS2 campaign begins.

GVF Anubis: See Apollo, except add "kamikaze".

GVB Amun: Still an effective heavy bomber. With two Banshee turrets it's a pain to attack, also.

GVFr Bast: Still easy to kill. If you don't remember, it's the Vasudan Poseidon minus turrets.

Avenger: Still in use. If you examine the table stats it's surprisingly powerful in relation to FS2 weapons. Early in the weapon, it's the most numerous and popular NTF weapon.

Banshee: Also still in use by the NTF in the beginning. Even now quite powerful.

Shield Breaker: Relatively rare. You won't see this weapon much.

Disruptor, Adv. Disruptor: What, you though the NTF was going to use a Vasudan Akheton SDG?

ML-16: Purely in the game for fun. Only use it if you want to, we're not going to force you to..I think :devilidea:

Interceptor: The only real difference between the Interceptor and the Harpoon is that the Interceptor is slightly bulkier and does less damage.

Fury: Fury's in there too. Not quite as effective as the Tempest but you make do with what you have.

MX-50: Still in there, although quite rare. You'll usually see a large quantity of these alongside about half as many Rockeyes in the Team Loadout screen.

Phoenix V: The Trebutchet hasn't even been invented yet - the GTVA forces will use these too.

Tsunami and Harbinger: Still far more of these in supply in the backwater worlds of Polaris, Sirius and Regulus than Cyclops or Helios.

New weapons:

The Prometheus Advanced:

Think of the Prom ADV as the NTF's Kayser.

The Tredegar:

The NTF's Subach, with a twist. Derived from the Avenger and a bit of special tech (you can see the resemblance) it has fairly low damage but balances it with high speed. Again, it only does 75% damage to shields, but it does 150% damage to hulls.

The Katyusha:

A dumbfire rocket that's designed to destroy freighters and cruisers. Very cheap to make and quite useful. You can fit 40 in the Medusa's top bank.

Fireball Light Bomb:

A light bomb. 5 can fit in the Athena's second back. Mostly used by the Athena and is effective against cruisers and corvettes. Fast lock time and speed.

Check the site for more info on these ships and weapons - the Augeas description is out of date, however - I'll update it later.

the Augeas looks like an apollo, the other ships look great especially the Ragnarok.

I like the idea of a heavy dumbfire.

the new weapons look good but i don't know about the streams on the prom. adv.

edit: the screenshots on the website look nice.

Things are going well. Black Wolf is making forum graphics for us. I went on a FREDing spree and nearly finished about 4 missions 3 days ago. So for these past two days I've been resting :p

Edit: And for those of you who wonder, I will try to keep you informed even if it's like this, informing you that I'm resting :p

It's a tri engine Apollo made from scratch about 6 months ago. I'm not that happy with the maps at the moment. May remap it so it doesn't take 5 maps.

Yet more plot work and Woomeister has given me the unfinished Augeas. I'm POF data-ing (:p) it.

Hopefully, I can coerce Black Wolf into making hud and interface art, along with maybe reskinning it.

I've been "coerced" (:p) The Augeas, which I'm told is now unique to NTV, will have interface art, hud Icons and a somewhat heavily modified skin. Then maybe Alikchi will let  me out of this small metal prison. ;)

Edit - BTW, I need to know where the Augeas' Squad insigniae will go.

Yeah it was dropped from Inferno at the very last minute. Have fun :D

Post by: Black Wolf on June 17, 2002, 08:07:38 am
I'd like them to go here(http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/ntv/images/augeas here.jpg)

This section is a real ***** to do well due to texture mapping on the actual model (It comes out skewed, so covering it up with a squad icon would save me a lot of trouble fiddling with angles :).

I know the head looks crap, but these are earlier skins. The current head looks better.

Halfway-finished a new mission today. Convoy escort with a twist..that's all I'm going to say
Arr..arr..screw that, I can't resist

You're escorting two tritons in an active asteroid belt. The belt is marked with Nav Lights (remember that old mod)? At the far end of the asteroid field is a node. Easy enough.
Except that the reason you don't see nav lights in the original FS2 campaign, I've decided, is that the heavily traveled nodes' have all been blown up.
Thus, the node you are guarding is not heavily traveled. Why?
The space mines, maybe? The sentry guns speckled throughout the field? Or could it be the Thoths, hidden, powered down behind the Nav Lights?

You're going to have fun protecting those two Tritons. :D

Yeah, I noticed the temporal anomoly too. Could be that the Hades surviving (and later being upgraded and painted red) was what made the NTF victorious.

Whatever it's origins it needs more variation on it's colour scheme. Play with the contrast and brightness to gets it's running lights white.

Hardly, but thanks for the recognition :D. When I dl the VP, I'll have a look at these skins, and maybe alter them a bit to inprove variation. But if I'm doing that and the Augeas, It'll push back my mission even further.

Just checked - it's going to cost something like $30 AUD to get a single mug shipped over here... at that price I've got to think about whether I want it or not :(. Don't close down til I've told you one way or another, ok?

BTW, are you going to make this any more public? ie, news posts, etc.? Coz you'd get more business, and I'm sure there're a lot of people who'd love to have a NTF cap or mug, but don't check this forum, but it might be a little...shall we say indiscreet, given the circumstances?

Maybe you should suggest this place to Shrike for the HLP T Shirts idea that was floating around awhile ago? It seems like a reasonably decently priced site, and from what I understand, there's a way to put profit down to 0 (their base price)? That way there'd be no arguing over who the money should go to.
Title: Updates
Post by: Alikchi on July 25, 2002, 11:46:44 am
I'm not getting any money - it's set at their base price.
I could put up a news post, on the NTV site - in fact I think I will. As for the HLP T-Shirts thing, it's up to Shrike. I'd reccomend him finding a higher-res HLP logo, though.

I have an NTF cap and a Nodewars poster in the mail

Yes Yes, we are about 50% of the way through the demo mission making (which only really began in earnest about two weeks ago), so in theory, you should be able to kill yourself some Zogs within the month...but little things like Exams and week long parties (Leavers week rocks ;7 ) are gtting in the way of my FREDding time - so expect the demo before Christmas (Hopefully).

Currently it will be either 5 or 6 missions, possibly a branching end (One End sees you in Epsilon Pegasi, the other in Deneb) - this is particularly likely if Alikchi actually hires one of the FREDders who applied. Anyway, it will catalogue the beginnings of the NTF rebellion 18 months prior to FS2, and will probably be released as a VP of under 2 megs (We aren't putting in even a quarter of the stuff the full campaign will contain - no NTF interfaces, no NTF intel graphics, no NTF main screen, - just the missions and a few minor mods to make it fit the pre FS2 timescale).

Anyhow - any questions? We'll obviously have more solid information as we get closer to completion, but most queries should be answerable at this point.

Hokay, another status update for you on the demo, this time I even have some numbers :)

Of the five missions, One is 100% Complete, two are being tweaked by Alikchi, and are about 90 % complete, The first mission I'm still working on, it's about 70% complete, and the Fourth mission is being done by Alikchi, about 50% complete, meaning the demo is about 81% complete. However, if all goes to plan, my mission will be 100% completed tonight or tomorrow, so, depending onAlikchis speed, we could be beta testingby the end of the week :D.

Errr... yeah. Here's the thing. Mods and storyline are 100% complete, all we need are missions and people who work fast enough to handle them. Ideally we'd have Blaise Russel in here to finish the whole thing in about a month.

As it happens we're trying to get the FRED academy involved to take it over, but it's somewhat disorganized on their end. My job (mods) is done, BW has many other responsibilities, Alikchi is gone and Adwight... actually I don't know about Adwight. If you see him let him know we're looking for him.

Anyway. That's where things stand--all we need is for the mission outlines to actually be translated into missions, without it being rushed through and ending up like Silent Threat.

I'm willing to FRED and do missions for you. I enjoyed the Demo of NTV and have been waiting for ages for this project to finish. So I'd be more than happy to help out :)

FA = FREDders' Academy

The campaign is going to the FRED Academy for completion, due (I'd imagine, at least in part) to a lack of in-house fredders.

Hi!

Uh, yeah. Short answer, we have mods and mission outlines and nobody to do the missions. I don't know anyone involved with FA, though, so it's just sort of sitting here.

It was the first campaign to use cutscenes, even if there were no cutscene SEXPs back then. It was interesting IMO.

ML-16 and MX-50.
Poor NTF.  :)
Though Valk and Avenger are worth of something (especially Avenger, as it's better than Subach-HL7).

FreeSpace 2 had the Italian language included IIRC.

I once had Polish version of FS2 (now I play in english, because I'm not longer installing FS from my disks, but rather install a TC and then overwrite it's files with retail .vps), so I don't see why there wouldn't be Italian version in Italy.

:wtf: Well, you could also
- copy the retail files somewhere
- run the Launcher (retail or FSO)
- boom, that's it.

The player's squadron is composed of rookies, and the NTF keeps the good stuff for units that were once part of the GTVA fleets stationed in Sirius, Regulus and Polaris. Sometimes, the NTF employs a Soviet tactic: a mix of old and modern units to capizalize on numbers and rapid strikes. Think of a wing of Hercs supporting the modern Herc IIs - the presence of modern spacecraft somewhat reduces the handicap of deploying older units. Useless to say that, up close, the old Hercs can deliver their goods and inflict severe damage to cruiser-size vessels and below. The same principle is applied to pure fighters and bombers with encouraging results.

The NTF is not "poor" - it's just that it doesn't assign valuable stuff to rookies who still need to show their true potential. Obviously, the player will have access to better weaponry starting from the second mission.

The first mission has been designed for the player to feel the technological gap. NTF fighters are outgunned and pilots complain about it, but the squadron leader replies by claiming that the enemy's advantage consists in better weaponry at the expense of speed and maneuverability (which are very important). Unlike the rest of the squad, the leader previously served the GTVA (so he's not a rookie) and gives precious hints throughout the first part of NTV. The player will also feel the GTVA's superiority, so it won't be like ST:R's rogue faction of the GTI (which, IMO, did not make me feel its substantial superiority during the game).

No - that translated interface (which is WIP) is the result of my work. 134th Barracudas (Rael on IRC) is helping me a lot with the translation.

Keep in mind that it's only the interface to be translated - me and 134th are not really going to work on the main FS2 campaign and ships/weapons tables. The interface is immediate and universal, the other texts are specific. For example, I'm using the translated interface in Inferno without any problems.

Who made the pictured mission? dragonsniper?

It was me. The screenshots don't come from a complete version of the mission (in the last two screenshots there should have been two Tritons). I'm working on the mission right now, and I also intend to get the second mission done today.
