Re: A celebration of Freespace
And it definately wouldn't have several thousand rounds.

What sort of flight model is being used here? I know FSO can do it, but how well? I do recall Nuke was working on a more sophisticated flight model, though...

It actually comes across as a good bit of fun. Quite atmospheric.

The comments about the cold threw me off, though. There's snow in the air, which means it has to be relatively warm...

Well, the GSh-30-1 would have 2000 rounds to start with, according to wikipedia.
So....4000 if there's two of them doesn't sound too far off, actually.
I know nothing about loading airplane guns though. :P

All aircraft of the Flanker family to include the Berkut only have 150 rounds in their GSh-30-1.

Six seconds if you don't let go of the trigger.

The GAU-8/A goes for around 22 with twice the RoF and nearly ten times the number of rounds. :p

Re: A celebration of Freespace
If you hold down the trigger a lot... yes.

Keep in mind you're dealing with a very powerful gun, a very accurate gun, that can take down the average fighter plane with just a few hits. That 30mm round will rip a fighter apart...

I've not read it myself, but I've heard there's an automatic firing mode for the cannon on some Russian jets. This means when the fire control system detects a high probability of a hit, it'll squeeze off a few rounds automatically. The pilot never has to pull the trigger... he/she just aims the plane...

Wouldn't be much fun if you had to rely on the few missiles you get throughout the mission :p Besides, it's 2075.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
Teaser looks nice. They actually have a working cockpit, nice (tho' a bit distracting since it takes away so much viewing space)
The bonus start up sequence... well...
It takes forever, I was just thinking "Just fly out of the damn hanger already, sheesh!" the whole time.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
Well , the time before beeing kicked by the magnetic launch system depend on two factor's :
-The player's fighter engine type (time needed to warmup engine, the one in the video's is an old generation fighter tough)
-Carrier launch system itself (the one you see in these videos is a very very old carrier, the next generation's one are faster to warmup)

In the end a modern fighter beeing launched from a modern carrier would take more than half of the time needed in that video.

Anyway this is short compare to what we first wanted to do with start sequence :

Re: A celebration of Freespace
I felt that the standard launch sequence should take between 10 to 20 seconds.

He read it wrong anyway, 2,000 rounds is what the estimated barrel life is.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
The thing is a realistic flight sim using todays weapons is pretty boring. See enemy 50km away. Very small dot. Lock on and fire.
Fun????
But really each 30mm cannon shot has the power of a couple of hand grenades and rip apart the titanium armour on most jets in one hit. It doesn't take long for it all to go wrong up there these days.
