No. Read the posts before your post (less than ten up.)

Re: A celebration of FreeSpace
Aren't they the same beams? Haven't actually compared the table entries, but they look pretty similar, I think.

Thin isn't necessarily bad - it conveys focus and precision. Hey, does anyone know how beam width in terms of fighter collision is determined? Is it based on the actual size of the beam effect?

There is also a new feature called "Beam Width" that can go in to the table before the Beam Sections that will define the beam targeting based on Radius, this allows Section radii to be completely different in terms of it's visual appearance without negatively affecting it's targeting. Next edition of the MediaVPs will be utilizing that in it's beams to restore more Retail like accuracy while still keeping the same visual appearance.

So this means no more being shafted by beams despite being 150 meters away from them?

And what's wrong with the accuracy of the diameter of the current beams in FS2_Open?

It's not like retail.

Re: A celebration of FreeSpace
Oh snap - I hadn't even considered that changing the individual section widths would affect the overall width of the beam in terms of hit calculations - and because I added haze to a lot of the beams they're actually much wider than they look in game. Good catch whoever spotted that one, and huge thanks and well done to whoever implemented the beam_width feature. :D

Man, VA, you have killed me so many times.  :blah:

Re: A celebration of FreeSpace
Hrm, that explains a few deaths I didn't anticipate.  Still, I much prefer the look of the current beams.  They look really solid and powerful (particularly the Terran ones).

Really? I always thought that they should be wider, because I've been able to get pretty close to some of them during my non-cheat playthroughs and not die.

There have been several cases where I'd die at least a Cruiser's length away from a beam.

Try it. Fly near a BFRed (where there is no visible beam), and prepare to die!

Re: A celebration of FreeSpace
I also though it was intentionnal.
I mean look, the visible part of the beam isn't the beam itself, just some consequence of it... Well at least, it's what some people aggreed upon, discuting on IRC :s
Plus, a such large beam must generate a lot of heat and everything. I know it shouldn't affect the ship since there's no air in space but eeeh.... there should be no sound too.

Mmh.. may the god of plasma core insertions have mercy on my spelling errors.
Edit: I guess you must except the grammar inquisition oO'

Re: A celebration of FreeSpace
it has been always like that, but have you tried making a cockpit? is really hard indeed.

another thing that keeps bugging me is the size of the fighters against the cap ships, but It's a game right?.. it can't be that difficult to ignore when flacked to death by enemies  ;)
