It seems that taking screenshots disrupts particle flow, if you look closely, you'd also notisce this on the first screenshot (there's a place right near the engine where plume is thinner).

Yes.
Turning them blue requires changing the particle effect, but since that's what I wanted to do next anyway, you'd most likely soon see screenshots from it.
Also, you're right about this being similar to some X3 engine trails, since it also uses particles rather than bitmaps for it's engines.
I may also try making a mod with those engine trails for use with mediavps.

The greatest problem I see with it is that some ships have thrusters with variable size, so it may be difficult to make flames look good on all of them.
It's even worse with warships, take a look at Hecate and it's thrusters.
If it was possible to make a PSpew on a per-thrusterpoint basis, it would be less of a problem.
