They point out even in the anime that the unmanned version are superior as pure fighting platforms. The plane already has an AI, so it normally wouldn't need a cockpit... it's the AI "who" needs a pilot... psychologically. Yeah, it's "complicated".

Considering anime influence on WoD, this might have been an inspiration (I haven't seen Sentou Yousei Yukikaze, so I don't know for sure).

You can see one-quarter of an explosion at the extreme right! And...and...uhm...I was taking my screenshot from the wrong angle, it has a beautiful planet and nebulas at the back, and...stuff...!
