Title: Freespace node map in glorious 3D!
Post by: Sandwich on October 31, 2001, 06:48:00 am
I've remade the FS node map in full 3D, peoples.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) The XY positions of the systems were calculated using the standard 2D map, but I then repositioned the systems along the Z axis according to how they are displayed in some of the command breifings. I've even included miniature jumpnode objects at the ends of all the intersystem subspace routes, and 3D labels for all the systems.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

The catch is that it is all in Rhino format. This means that I can't apply things like the jumpnode objects rendering in wireframe only, or that the system spheres render tgeir wireframes along with their surfaces, etc.

Anyways, I think this could really enhance the work of anyone doing command breifings and the like. I'll put it up for download (in Rhino's .3DM format, which 3D Exploration supports) in a few hours.

Enjoy!  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/cool.gif)

ARRRGH!! :-/

The place I was uploading it to informed me (after the upload had completed...    (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/rolleyes.gif) ) that they only allowed certain file types, among them .ZIP and .RAR. WTH?!?     (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/confused.gif)

Ahhh, heck - I'll put it up on GeoCities...

EDIT: AAAGHHH! GeoCities doesn't allow RAR either. Ok, I renamed the file to 3d_nodemap.rar.zip and it seems to accept it. So don't forget to remove the ".ZIP" from the filename before you open it.

Download 3d_nodemap.rar.zip here. ("http://www.geocities.com/sandvich/fs2/files/3d_nodemap.rar.zip")

Good work, Sandwich! I coverted it to .3ds. I don't think I got the "lines" from each system. I probably did something wrong. Well, I'll just try to convert it again.

Hmmm... can you do an .ivr render? Seems that that would be much easier on those of us that don't have 3DX, since the plugin is pretty available and it's practically the same thing...

Someone spent a whole hell of a lot more time on it than I did.   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

I think I can help with that. Rhino can export to a number of different file formats, among them DXF, 3DS, etc. I've found that for making models for import into truespace, DXF woorks best. So here's the dialog box I get when I choose to export to DXF: (NOTE: this image probably won't work, would the powers that be here at HLP fix it?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) (http://www.geocities.com/sandvich/misc_images/rhino_dxf_export.gif)

Anyway, tell me if you need/want any special options set there, and I'll convert and upload it.

.IVR? Never heard of it, and besides, what's the point of doing a render of a thing like this? The whole point is that you can have it now in 3D -  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/v.gif) already supplies the 2D version.

I really wish I could see this 3D nodemap, but I have no idea which application I need to use to open it and view it.

I think I have to call on a good friend of mine here who can help me out...

Well, if you have Rhino, open it in that.
If not, downlaod 3D Exploration ("http://www.us.righthemisphere.com/products/3dexplore/index.htm") and convert it to a format that you can use...

Send me a .dxf version and I'll show you why it's better. For now, all I'll say is it's compact, it works as a browser plugin, and that it isn't quite a 3D model, but it isn't exactly a standard render, either.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

I've uploaded a DXF version of the nodemap, but the quality isn't as good as the Rhino one (spheres aren't spheres anymore...). Anyways, here's the link ("http://www.geocities.com/sandvich/fs2/files/nodemap_dxf.rar.zip"), and make sure you remove the .ZIP extension - the file is a RAR file!

There's not really anything to post a picture of - it looks like the node map.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

But in 3D.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

RAR. And we're supposed to open that with what, exactly?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/rolleyes.gif)

There's a reason .zip files are used- they're standard for most people. I too have a modem and reularly upload packages, and a .zip file that takes 15 minutes to upload is still invariably better than a file that takes 1 minute but that nobody can extract.

WinRAR ("http://www.rarsoft.com/") - sorry, you're right, I should've posted a link to the proggie. Anyways, I use it 'cause it generally compresses stuff much better than Winzip.

EDIT: Wrong URL...

something not planar... just different nodes scattered about in all 3 coordinates, or arranged in a hollow sphere about a central point... might as well explain it now, an .ivr is an (evidently extremely compact) image file that, when viewed using the program or plugin simulates standing in a fixed point looking around in 360*. Very, very cool looking, and smaller than a DXF.

Speaking of real galaxies, the Freespace nodemap shows quite clearly that the systems are not arranged according to anything obvious, like distance or direction. I say this because AlphaCen, which in Real Life™ is the closest star system to Sol, is most definetly not the closest in the nodemap.

So perhaps the map represents something more useful, considering it's about subspace nodes: relative subspace travel time from one system to another.

Why dont you take the Image of Vasuda Prime (from the begining of an ANI found in a VP) and use it as some sort of planet skin.

Looks around in confusion...or....wouldent...that err work???

What this 3D nodemap is is an extrapolation of the positions of the  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/v.gif) modeled nodemap from the command briefs.

Su, have you been able to download the nodemap? If so, remove the ".ZIP" at the end, and open it up in WinRAR.
