It has become a cult classic, this is true. However, those top sales, those are top among obsolete games. No where near what a hit RTS gets when it gets put out on the shelves. Also , those are all-time figures. You can't rely on all-time sales in the retail market. If it doesn't sell well right away, you're hosed.

Quite true. A few hundred purchases in a week won't be enough for game developers these days. They need to sell thousands of game copies a month to make a living, and that's being optimistic in my opinion.

I will never understand how or why D3 and FS2 sold poorly. They're some of the better games that I've ever known, comparable to MS-DOS games like Tyrian or Raptor.

The reason for the poor sales is because of poor advertising. Heck, I didn't even know that such things as FreeSpace2 and FreeSpace1 exist at all, until Vasudan Commander showed me a video of FS2 and suggested me to get the game.

Oh yeah, thank Vasudan Commander that I'm here on HLP. Otherwise there wouldn't be ASW, EW and multiple other mods in the works. There'd be one more, I guess, if he wasn't banned.

Just look at how excited everyone is at the dual release of Starcraft 2 and Dow II. Even the exclusive Dow II beta has made a few people last-minute buy a valid copy of Soulstorm.

I learned about FS2 through the trailer, which was included in Disc 2 of Descent 3.

why don't the guys here make a mod, so great, that it's not even freespace 2, it's basically freespace 3, i dunno, with an in-game model builder and fantastic graphics or something... hmmm, how could you improve freespace 2, um... what i said, but, not so nube.


Well, get deep into the games core and create a really great open

SCP pretty well fits into that, um, just play more scp and forget about capella, ETAK, bosche, etc. Or just angrily debate over the freespace forum. Or both.

Vasudan Commander was making Destruction/Indestructible. Would have aided it, and gotten the mod to a serious start, hopefully.

I don't think he was banned. He went on a long absence after being monkeyed for posting illegal free anime links to YouTube, and just general misconduct which honestly I don't blame him for. Due to his title ("Biggest n00b on HLP -- And proud of it!") a lot of people went against him and generally berated him for the few (albeit rather large) mistakes he made earlier. He wasn't banned like takashi was, he just left of his own accord.

At least that's what I think happened. If he was banned then I think that'd be a sad ending to a stupid story, because I liked that guy and worked on one of his mods (Destruction). He was cool.

It is still in production (I am working on it).

Our main goal on making Destruction was not to make FS3, it was just to make a big mod with some moral statement that the true destroyers were humanity/Vasudans. It's really no wonder it didn't really start because it was overly ambitious and we really had no one to convert the very few models we made. I was actually aware of this at the time - I was apprehensive at that point but I believed that once we got started, our momentum would carry us through to the end, which is why I joined it. Of course we never got this momentum.

Destruction went down the drain because Commander, the project lead, decided to disappear indefinitely (an absence which he still has not returned from) and the decapitated project dissolved literally the very day following Commander's disappearance. Luckily, Earth Defense got past that early volatile stage where just a few people were holding the mod together, and I have faith that Earth Defense will definitely be completed eventually if not soon.
