Title: Have 2 modlers but can't convert models
Post by: Star Dragon on September 13, 2002, 12:11:09 am
Hi all SD here...

I got 2 modlers working on my new project, amazingly enough a SECOND original idea, A Gundam TC (total conversion). Most of this will be used in the crossover mod BUT the point is this:

We have 2 models made for FS2 and all vertices we sure to be under 20 for good old PCS... BUT they are made with 3ds... what programs can be used to convert all those created models into formats that canbe converted to .pof? The modlers have no idea cause they never heard of .pof before they saw FS2 recently... They are very excited about this project and many more models are planned for the future (low, medium, and HIGHLY detail) including melee weapons! One estimate was for a outrageous model with 4500 polys! I said we need to start smaller just to get it to work at first. All weapons internal until l8tr. PLEASE help us! Making this possible is my overiding ambition and when finished and combined with ShadowWolf's amazing breakthrough (Shhhh!) will be the coolest thing to hit FS2 ever!!! (from our perspective)... Thnx in advance...

Use deep exploration to convert to .cob then use a tool like Cob2Pof or PCS or somthing to make it pof.

I got the demo of Deep Exploration and made some .cobs outta ther formats, but since all teh stuff I got was not made with FS2 inmind they won't convert... :( But at least I got 1 half of the equation!!!! Thank you much!

now how about the other half.  I have downloaded cob2pof.  but I can't get it to do anything useful, like convert.  Help please.

try using PCS (pof constructor suite) by Kazan...

I think it's more efficient than pof 2 cob but I can't give you a definite answer (as I have no experience in it)

By grouping, it means you have to glue lights to things..  i.e. if you want the hull by itself, glue a light to it.  If you want a hull with turrets, I *think* (though I may be wrong, but this is how I did it, sooo) you have to glue a light to each of the turrets, name it accordingly, and then glue it all together right, all in Truespace.  Trueview helps with this.  I think there's a tutorial floating around somewhere on how to do this...  I'd offer my help, but school's about to start, and I suck at POFing models, and table entries... haven't had enough practice to get good at it. :(

Get hold of a copy of Rampage' manual from this thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,8468.0.html)

Have a look at mine as well once you're finished reading Rampage's. Converting models is easy peasy. 100x easier than modelling, uv mapping, or texturing. There's no reason not to do it yourself.

I am a Fredder and mission designer. :)
I decided to start to learn weapons and tables first then later modling if I can find someone in RL to study under...

So? cob --> pof is not exactly hard!

... I can't believe I'm doing this.  Star, if you like, you can send me ONE model you need glued together, and I'll do it and send it back to you so that you can have an example of what you need.  I'm not sure if my e-mail address is current, but if it's not, this one is:  [email protected]

Basically anything that can save as .cob will do. BTW, could you tell me how to mod Quake III?

What version of Truespace did you save it in?  Everytime I open it, my version crashes.  I'm running 4.3.  And please send the textures too :D

Ahhh, LWO's I can handle.  Cool :D

edit:  Ahhh... I see.  You made it all one subobject... You might have to split it up.  I'll see what I can play with.  No promises.

2nd edit:  How'd you get the polycount so low?

My mail was messing up and stuff but the full docs lead to the artists web site. H made it all public. 3 versions of White star. The shadow crab, scout, and fighter. SO if you get WS working LET ME KNOW! I will send the rest to you :)...(tease) I forgot to mention he did it in 5.0 and somethig about textured tweaked to work in 6 or 6.5 Lightwave...
