Got the Unreal T2003 demo today (from here (http://www.ausgamers.com/files/?agn=details&id=3313)). Wasnt as exciting as I thought, my machines not really fast enough to run it properly which doesnt help. BUt the only bit that really impressed me was the 'rag doll' physics in it.
What do you guys think?
-
I got the demo but haven't played it, I'll give my impressions later :)
-
I got it within the hour it came out(yesterday)
It sucks... I hate it.. its Unreal Tournament turned into a quake3 style gameplay with slightly better graphics
-
What was it before?
You run around, you pick up big guns, you shoot stuff. Sometimes you fall off ledges, or press buttons. Is there something I'm missing? I'm not exactly a connisseur of FPSes (FreeSpace is closer than I generally get), so I might be missing some fine line of blowing stuff up that's just inexcusable.
-
If you've played both Unreal Tournament and Quake3 you should notice a difference...
-
UT = More realism, feels very small and closed in and slightly worse graphics.
Q3 = Gore, Gore, Kick-ass graphics, feels very big, Gore.
UT-Sniper levels friggin own.
This one time I was playing this city map with only sniper-rifles. Hiding in the dark, finding windows to set-up at, constantly scanning around for other snipers in the buildings across the street. Kicks ass. But Q3 is just pure carnage.
-
I just got back from playing it for about half an hour (demo version)... it was... "ok". The graphics were kinda overdone, JKII graphics are a good example of high-quality, but not overbearing graphics. TFC is the perfect example of perfect graphics.
-
downloading now; I will post comments in a little bit.
-
I just finished playing through each map a few times and got a feel of the game; overall I quite liked it. The gameplay is fairly similar to the original UT, but that is not exactly a bad thing. ;) My computer is not exactly state-of-the-art, but it ran very well on 800x600x32 with all the graphics turned to max, staying above 50fps at almost all times.
The graphics were pretty good; not exactly all that ultra-revolutionary as the hype would have one believe, but still at the top today. Lots of special effects - the bright glows look quite nice - and the polygon count on the levels is much higher than in most games today. The detail textures that have always been a hallmark of the Unreal engine were present everywhere, and reflections were used much more prominently. (e.g. the floating metal spheres on that CTF map) However, I still noticed the lens flare problem that has been there since the original Unreal; the lens flares seem to remain the same size if you move closer or farther from the light source. It is much less noticeable now due to all the other effects but it is a simple issue that should have been addressed. Also, since there are so many effects this time around, it can be difficult to tell when you are hitting someone. (the blood splashes are hard to see admist all the other effects)
The bots are a slightly upgraded version of the original UT bots; this time, they use the translocator and jump around a lot more. Good at close-up confrontations and deathmatch games, but they are not very responsive in CTF. (if you attack a godlike-level bot carrying a flag, he sometimes doesn't turn to face you or fire but just keeps walking in a straight line up to his base)
The internet play was pretty smooth and remniscent of the first game for the most part - there are already a thousand or so servers up there - except with different weapons and maps. (actually, the weapons are for the most part functionally the same as the UT ones but with new names and effects, and the balancing seems to be a bit better)
I only really had two problems with the game:
The textures on the weapon models need to be changed. One thing I liked about the original UT is that every weapon had its own distinctive appearance (not the projectiles/shots; the weapon itself), but in this most of the weapons look more or less the same. (the models are fine; it is the textures that are redundant) However, the ammo and other pickups look pretty good.
The other problem I had was that I could not easily distinguish my team members from those of the opposing team; everyone looks pretty much the same. (the players did have some colors on them but one cannot tell at a glance) At the beginning I kept dying simply because I could not tell who was my teammate and who was an enemy.
Also, what are you supposed to do in that bombing run thing? I just ran around blowing stuff up and my team won, but I had no clue what all that stuff about the "ball" was. :p
Anyway, I will probably be buying this, but I will of course wait for a few reviews first. Has this game already come out or is it still unreleased?
-
Well, I agree with CP about one thing... everyone looks the same. As for the bombing run, the objective is to get the ball into the enemies portal. The ball is a yellow floating orb with a sort of matrix around it. When someone picks it up, they gain that spinning spherical matrix. The ball carriers location is displayed in the top middle of the screen. When you have the ball, you dont have any weapons except the power to shoot the ball somewhere, usually to a teammate of the portal. To score, run to the enemies portal, and either shoot it in (less points), or jump through the portal (more points, but if you screw it up, you'll fall into the rather large pit underneith it, you'll need to double-jump off the portal to get through it).
-
oh is that what that blue orb thing was? I thought it was some funky shield belt effect... :p
Anyway thanks; I need to try that mode again later. Sounds a little like a combination of the Team Hoard and Monsterball modes from D3...
-
The full version will have two times larger textures... my computer can't run it, but my brother tried it on his one (Duron 1,2GHz, Radeon 8500LE), and it didn't run too good (he said so, I wasn't watching). Resolution or details didn't affect FPS, so I guess it was CPU-limited.
Well, he didn't like it too much. Might be because of the low FPS.
-
97.7 mb wow and it`s a demo:eek2:
-
it's not so big... I've seen bigger demos... hmm, well ok it is quite big but not the biggest
I need to d/l it and try it... when I get my new GFX card that is
-
the game itself, on the other hand, will be huge. A whopping 3 gig I've heard.
-
That really is quite huge... damn
on the other hand FFXI is supposed to be over 4Gig's so... or that's what I've heard
-
Downloading now, I will post comments in three months.
-
 Will that be when you've finished downloading or can tear yourself away from it?

I can answer with one word: 33.6kbps modem.

Very nice. However, the weapons were mostly re-hash, with better effects. They only have about two new weapons, and two different alt-fires. Maps were, of course, excellent with the new Graphics engine, but they could have been fine tuned to more of an America's Army: Operations style: Just enough to beat downz0r your eyes in the beauty, but not so big and fluffy as to bog down your system with unnecessary nuances in the terrain. The new "bomb run" multiplayer mode was really fun, and the AI is still top notch (which is more than I can say for Q3: tons of times I've shot a bot with a rocket from accross the map because he thought moving was for wussies.)
I REALLY liked the new physics system. I've been blown up against the wall, and then slowly slid down off of it, then slowly sliding off of the ledge right in front of it. I then fell, hit the ground, bounced up about an inch as my legs recoilled, then slumped to the ground in a sad heap.
All in all, very nice, but it needs more polish and new weapons in order to match up to the orignal.
-
gawd, I just played the demo and kinda hated it.
I really didn't like the feel of the characters/environment/weapons...
First of all, they TOOK OUT DOUBLE ENFORCERS!!! *me cries* and the weapons it featured were all too drab or Q3 like.
Then, the character models look short and fat :p and there weren't any GIRL MODELS  (:p)
-
Man....I love the thing. Its great fun...the music, sound, and visuals are all pretty good...although I'm sure I'm missing the real goods by not having a GeForce 3 or higher (I've got a GTS 32mb).
Sure its rehash...but if it weren't, you'd all be complaining that it wasn't Unreal Tournament anymore. Can't win with the critics I guess.
-
I suppose there wasn't a whole lot they could change though... ( "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" :D)
I have a non-XP Athlon 1400 and an overclocked GF3, so that is not really the best thing today, but as I said before it runs very well with max details.

I think, that it is another piece of potentially good software, my below-low-end PC cannot handle.
-
please note that it's a demo, and that the full version will include other species that will handle differently and have other weapons. other than that, haven't tried it, so I have no opinion.

Gee, then maybe I should get a better dictionary. Couldn't find the word 33.6kbps in mine.

:lol::lol::lol:
0wnt!
Edit: Wait... if the numbers are not counted, it'd be five words. kilobytes per second. :p
-
That's an acronym. :p :D
-
If it is written out fully it becomes six:
thirty three kilobytes per second modem
:D
-
nope, eight: thirty three dot six etc etc
what a pointless post, here I am, spamming again. yes, I'm ashamed.
-
whoops, forgot those... :p
thirty three point six kilobytes per second modem
-
WORD!
-
Erm... if anyone's interested, I've just played the demo and to be honest, I fail to see the point. Prolly I'll be playing Facing Worlds and Oblivion tomorrow, same as always...
-
I am sort of a Coret and Lament guy myself. :D
BTW this UT2003 will have a domination mode, right? That and CTF were (and are) my favorite game types in the first game.
-
CTF Instagib is my favorite... and I kick ass at anything thats instant-transmition shots... its just that with a lot of people, there really is no strategy... its all carnage. And I don't like that. Its fine with maybe 3v3 or 4v4, but 8v8 just doesn't go with me.
-
I always avoid instagib like the plague when playing online since it's too lag dependent in my opinion. Basically anyone who has the better ping will win. It it is quite fun offline or on LANs though.
-
There is zeroping, CP...
This is not an official p1mp yet, but anyway, ArchSpace (http://space.magewar.com) is back!

I've played a few bot-matches and it's pretty good. Nothing wrong with the performance either. 1024x768 ran comfortably and 1280x1024 was fairly playable in 16 player bot match. The forest level being the slowest, but the indoors ran fine.
Anyone run the benchmark?
-
Tried it on my brothers Duron 1,2GHz, 256MB PC-133 and Radeon 8500LE.
I think it ran pretty good, though it seemed to be CPU-limited. He had set it to 800x600, I didn't change the resolution but details didn't have an effect to anything. The flyby of course ran better. :)
But well, at first I thought it was utter crap, but after playing it for a while it was OK. With a dodge+jump you can jump a bit too fast and far though, in my opinion. :)

on flyby citadel I got:
210.962021 fps -- Score = 55.837685
weird... thats... high :D
:p

After seeing it with good system (my friends... AthlonXP1700, Radeon 900Pro 128M) I must say that it looks quite entertaining. Not a bad one... not at all :)
