HardWar is a non-liner based game. You can be just about anything you want to be. There is a plot but you don't have to follow it to play a great game. Check out http://www.planethardwar.com/index.html for info on how to get the game.

It is very similar to Privateer Two, but on a moon, Titan. You have a ship, known as a moth, and you fly around this moon's old mining colony trading, scavenging, or bounty hunting. Anything, in fact, to get better weapons, a new ship, etc.

As hotsnoj says, there is a plot, but it is near impossible to follow.
The main core of the plot is that two main gangs, Klamp G and Lazarus, are fighting for controlof the moon, and to get the old mass drivers (the only way off the moon) working again.
