Title: The GTB Gargana
Post by: aldo_14 on July 15, 2001, 03:39:00 pm
The Gargana is one of the heaviest bomber operating in the GTVA todya.  Nicknamed the 'walrus' by it's pilots, the Gargana is notorious for it's poor maneuverability.  However, it's massive firepower can easily destroy any enemies unfortunate enough to get in its path.

10 guns, plus 2 Browning/ Maxim on the turret. 3 missile banks, v. high capacity.  slow turning circle, medium cruising speed (60 m/s).  Max Eng speed is 100 m/s (if you set the power level to top), so it has a hop of escape from it's payload.  good armour too, seeing as it'll have to take a lot of hits.

Roughly 540 Polys

This is proabably the best tex. job I've done, and (for the first time) 90% of it is original stuff done by me      (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/cool.gif).  Best of all, if anything gets in you way, it's dead meat (even without launching missiles).

I have only two suggestions: replace the white by grey, and make the whole thing a bit darker.
anyway, it's an impressive ship  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Hey Shrike, nice timing. Those engine flaps look a lot like the ones you have on the new Wasp class ships...  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Wee bit of resemblence on the back end - same turret pos. as well i think.  That said, I never really saw this piccy before I finished the Gagana, so I can still claim total originality.

Almost done  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

can't decide whether to have visisble thruster objects, and whether or not to keep the front turret....

Final length is 45m, though, making it the largest bomber in the GTVA (Boanerges 41m).

Your little bombers are no match for my Akira (newest model, version 4 ("http://koti.mbnet.fi/jabu/bomber02.jpg")[courtesy of J Crappy Textures Ltd.]  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)). It's just a bit over 60m long  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

4 primaries, 3 secondary banks, 2 turrets.

...that's actually a nice design, if not a bit monotonous on those missile tubes.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif) Very - tank-ish. Reminds me of an Amun.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

The Jotun is gigantic. We scalled it around the cockpit,ad, n model view, including the thruster flames (which are very big), the Jotun is 111 meters long... It's about 80 meters without the thrusters, and it dwarfs the seraphim  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

How are you determining what scale the cockpit is? I'm sorry but 111m for a bomber is just TOO BIG. I mean, its half the size of  a cruiser, you could mount Sgreens on it for crying out loud. Definately needs a resize.

read the whole post. It's 80 meters long.
How do I scale the cockpit? I made the ship from the concept, the proportions are correct.
Then I put the ship next to another one, and make the cockpit look right next to the other one, so it's not designed for a garden dwarf or to host an olympic pool, depending the model. The size is right, if Volition did the ship, it would be that big, or would have a bigger cockpit and would look ridiculous. Look at the Jotun as a B52 next top a F117. both are bombers, and nobody will say the B52 is irrealisticly big, mmh?

-edit: too many typos
-edit2: corrected piscine to please Snipes (and it was not mispelled, I just forgot to translate it from french :รพ)

Olympic piscine? Well, I'm going to use my limited knowledge of french/spanish and say a pool?

Yea, you're french, but piscina is spanish... and screw the spelling...

It's not VERY big, concerning to reality... nowadays REAL bombers are the size of passanger airliners like the Boein 747... The Juton can be this type of bomber but for space. It is much more slower than any other bombers, handles like a brick, but has firepower and armor like nobody else!! For example it could have three secondary banks with enough capacity for 8 or 9 helious each  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

That's what I think that this bomber would be good for

Wow... Very nice   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) Although I say maybe the rocket launchers could be changed a bit... Personally (not meaning to offend) I'm not a big fan of big black holes... Maybe smaller black holes? I dunno... Something like what [V] did with its bombers (terran and Vasudan). Dunno just a thought.

Actually, I quite like this size. Even though you have the size wrong, and it is actually 80m, I wouldn't have minded if there was a ship that was about half a cruiser size. It would be nice to fly a ship with that much destructive power - there's a big gap between the Ursa and the Leviathan: 2 AAA beams and 150m. Give me firepower, and I won't care if the damn thing handles like a brick.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Well, I played the jotun in the inferno demo... And it's really not worth its size, for now. It's so large than even a full wing of fighter can pass through the shots from the 2 guns, for exemple. So I'll make a little modif: I'll concentrate about 3/4 gunpoints on each gun, giving it huge firepower. Alternatively, I'll allow it to carry only the Maxim, making it efficient only against capship. For fighter cover, both turrets will use a kayser. Now you'll really fly what I call a bomber  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
