Parappa the Rapper!

[runs in roughly same direction as venom]

Actually, more like Revolution X. Remember that game? The one where you shot CDs at roughly 40 billion Nazis in yellow suits? I just thought the insanely irritating low-quality Aerosmith track fit the utter crap of the rest of the game so well!

Tell you what did have some good choons was a little known GB game me old man bought me form the States, called Aerostar. Twas only small, but the music was pleasing to the ear, so far as good ole dot matrix would allow...

1st: Medal of Honor

2nd: Freespace

3rd: Freespace 2

MOHs music flows so well - I've removed the parts I like to listen to in Winamp...

Outforce wasn't bad... fact is, nothing was bad about that game but the game itself. And, to a degree, the plot.

I still like the ED music from TMP, but the other two thirds blew, so you can decide for yourself whether that qualifies.

These games are probably my favorites:

Freespace
Freespace 2
Deus Ex
Unreal

Jedi Knight's music is good, but not terribly original.  Homeworld had really sweet music, as did FS and FS2.  NOLF is catchy, but not outstanding.  And GTA 3 gets the best and worst music award.  Its good the first time you here it, but after a week straight you just want to rip out the speakers.

Hmm...

Let's see...

I haven't yet come across a game with a soundtrack I didn't like (and if I did I'd write it off pretty quickly) but some highlights would be:

FreeSpace 1&2 (particularly Cinema2 and the second half of the opening tune from the latter)
Some of the CDAudio tracks from Descent 2 (particularly one called "Glut")
The track that accompanied the Tei Tenga levels from Terminal Velocity

However my alltime favourite game soundtrack would have to be the tunes from a game call SkyRoads, a game few, if any, of you will have heard of.

Skyroads? For the time it was made, I guess it was all right. After all, it was back in the DOS days, wasn't it?

Battleforce 1942 has a good couple of tracks in the menu and mission loading screens... it's a shame you can't have them playing during the mission although it would doubtless be a little unrealistic.

And Ice is right, the Unreal tracks have all kicked ass (especially the menu track in the original Unreal).

Hmmmm, my list is quite different....

1) Romancing Saga 3 tied with Final Fantasy 6 (both for SNES)
2) Descent: Freespace tied with Final Fantasy 8 (8 mainly because of "The Man With The Machine Gun")
3) Sacrifice tied with Freespace 2

SNES music == 1337 :D

1st Place:  System Shock 1

Reason:  This is a hauntingly great example of how good the much maligned "techno" genre can be if its worked out properly.  Go to a sshock fan site and download it all - NOW!
medical suite, reactor level and intro tune are all must-haves.

2nd Place: Unreal

Extremely good sampled music done in the DOS Screamtracker!  I havent found any other tunes by Straylight - they seem to have disappeared but the Unreal 1 soundtrack was a real work of art.

3rd Place:  Descent 2

With the likes of NiN and Type-0 negative working on tracks for this game it couldnt fail to impress, however the track that stands out for me is "cold reality" - top notch industrial stuff.

4th Place: Half Life

Half life boasts some excellent electronic/industrial tracks and although Opposing Force only has 3 half decent tracks they are still pretty good - get hold of them.

5th Place:  Deus Ex

Great signiature tune, generally good atmospheric music throughout the game

5th Place:  Freespace 1 & Freespace 2 breifings

The freespace music I have to say was rather bland, but well produced and I escecially liked three of the brieifing tunes - although they're too damn short!

Speaking of all this - does anyone know where I can find me some Unreal music on mp3 or WAV? I say I like it but I used to resort to just leaving the game running in the background to hear the music... having it on MP3 would be better, and I can't find it on Kazaa...

theres a utility to rip out the Unreal music to screamtracker files somewhere.

UT is a different matter - that might use Mp3.

Were NiN actually involved with the D2 soundtrack? I though it was just Type O Negative and Ogre from Skinny Puppy?

NiN did the Quake 1 soundtrack, which if I didn't mention it before I like a little bit of as well, but I don't think they had a hand in D2...

Gran Turismo 3(I think) on the PS2 has some decent tunes.  So does WRC, although Ionly palyed the demo.

The title track on the original Grand Prix game for the PC was class. :)  (the old f1 track on the BBC ;) )

You can use ModPlug Player (http://www.modplug.com) to play the umx files directly or convert them to a number of other formats. (including wav) I know that Unreal, UT and DX use these files and it is probable that other Unreal-based games also have them. (actually I think that, at least for these three games, the music was made by the same two people) UT2003 uses ogg vorbis files though.

These mod-based music files are somewhat hard to compose but space-wise they are certainly the most efficient sound system around. This mod system combined with some good sound compressor (mp3, etc.) would make the ultimate audio format.

These were also quite nice. Actually, one of my personal favorites was an unused soundtrack that appeared on the Vertigo CD only. (track 7)

Ooooh me likes this thread.

Ok so:

Blood Money on the Amiga had the best intro music ever along with Gods (hums "Into the Wonderful) Oooh and roadkill. That game rocked. Also Speedball2 oooh and Xenon2 (Bomb the bass) actually, come to think of it, any Bitmap Brothers game.

Someone mentioned Frontier: Elite2, that had excellent music, Blue Danube, Ride of the Valkyries and In the hall of the mountain king, something quite elegant about flying a friggin panther freighter through space to that.

The original Quake had an awesomely atmospheric soundtrack, very creepy. (btw NIN also produced all the sound effects)

Quake 2's wasn't bad but Rob Zombie gets boring pretty quick.

Lemme' seeeee, Half-Life, Wargasm was good (classical again though) Halo's soundtrack is on my must buy list, ummmmmmmm can't think of anything else at the moment but i'm sure I will. :)

ITF was never released, that is true. But music tracks are downloadable.

Since B5music site does not exist anymore(?) I have uploaded the tracks for you to download. Don't know how long it will be in my website though.

OK, six ITF battle sequence music tracks are in one rar file. You may need Winrar 3 to open the archive. Here, size is 22 MB (http://koti.mbnet.fi/~fury/misc/itf.rar)

Perhaps now you won't insult my comment about my favorite game music. :(
