Perhaps we should try to boost our community size.
Are we getting bigger or smaller?
How did everyone find themselves here?
-
HLP keeps getting new members regardless of action or inaction. No-one really gives a flying monkeys testicle about member numbers anyway, as long as everything doesn't go stagnant there is no need to infuse new blood..........in a metaphorical sense.
I came here after I was banned from the VBB and WS for the......1st time (?).
-
Well, yes but as time goes on and new games come out we are going to be at risk as I see it. The more members we have the more powerful we are.
I found this place when I was looking for the freespace 2 code to fix a bug on my geforce 4.
-
Number of members does not really give you right picture.
There is always "members" that have been registered but never posted. Another type is member is who came here, registered but is just lurking.
How many percent of member are actually active?
-
52% (495) or less are active, even more of a reason to boose our numbers

An interesting point, but how would we go about make the community bigger?

Make me an admin. My fame and popularity will cause people to register in droves.

If you get to be a admin, the forum won't live long enough to see hordes of people register:p
-
Get more people involved in FS and to a lesser extent IW, or find a new game. If you get people here "just for the hell of it" you're going to see an increase in spam becuase not many are going to have even heard of FS
-
I could adopt several new handles and personalities, thus inflating the number of active members...
But any other way just ain't gonna happen, unless you include more games. Not only is FS OLD, it's now REALLY OLD, game time, and even if it were bought with any frequency (FS1 is still sold quite a bit, so I assume THAT is) people have no way to find us. Get Volition to put up a link on their page, or get one of those search engine registration programs and take the top of the list on Google and Yahoo for "FreeSpace". It won't be worth it, I can guarantee, unless we give out free FS2s to everyone who joins, but it's another way.
That, or make ME an admin and gimme my own forum.:D Since I come free to all who wish to bask in my glory, it won't work that well for attracting people, but it might appease the E-Gods to have one of Their messengers in an admin capacity.
-
I think we're just fine! New members who become active and noticed in the community, like me or Tiara, should be more welcome than those who just lurk and spam and make things unpleasant. I like who and what we have--we shouldn't try to artificially inflate numbers.
-
communities that are too big are bad too, I'd rather keep HLP somewhat nice and small :p

You: have a campaign or 3 going
Tiara: Hardlights' chick.. besides my gurl Borealis ;) (Where are you, you are never on)
Some of us lowly members don't know how to mod and try to make up for it with healthy conversations and making people giggle like tickled school girls. Is that so bad? :p

She's currently underneath a hurricane, as of this morning.

Yey! Holiday!

I haven't read the whole tread. But you might want to add more games to the site. Like HardWar. If we get Software Refinary to release the source HardWar would be the best game EVER.

DON'T TOUCH MY BABY!!

Why would we want to have a FPS here? There's enough shooter sites on the internet already.
-
AAAAAAAHHHHH! No FPS! None at all! Look at the lowlife Red Faction brought to Volition and the VBB! And now the VWBB! No FPS games, please!!
-
Probably not. It seems ok so far too me, and it's not like we need more n00bs
see look! Joke! Chill guys. It was more of a rhetorical, i'll - attack - my -own- statement, statement . I think we are fine as we are, and if we are bored, than we need to make more mods, or at least finish existing ones :)
-
*cough* we need this game here *cough*
HardWar (http://www.softwarerefinery.com)
-
lol...finally, a few more HardWarites....

THAT'S what all the fuss and ****ty comics are about? Hah! HAH!
Pathetic. I've seen better (and better-looking) games of a similar strain run off a DOS prompt. This game is obviously derivative, doesn't look nearly as versatile as half a dozen abandonware games I could mention, and the graphics (the only thing it might have that the others don't, being new) don't impress me. If you want that sort of thing, get Elite, or B-Hunter, or even I-War 2 (or even hit the-underdogs.com/ for a free one.
That just pissed me off. I'll hope, for the sake of anyone who mentions that game again, that it's freeware or something. Only thing that could justify its existence.
Since we seem to be promoting our favorite games regardless of potential, I'll go for Earth 2150/60. Got a smallish colony of die-hards built in, a good programming base, and a love of things that go boom. Plus, we're self-regulating and tend to leave other forums alone. All you gotta do is help figure out a .msh fix (and a .tex one, ideally) that'll let us mod.
Now gimme something else stupid to bash. I've got a headache and this is making it better.

HardWar is not a crappy game. Just ask Ninechars about getting a copy (http://planethardwar.com/get_hardwar.html) so you can see for yourself. He has it some where on his site so you can download it.
We (the HW community) want the ppl who have the rights to the game come forward so we can get HardWar noticed. This game has been going on for 4+ years and the ppl who have had it that long still play it like it was the first time they ever did. And HardWar maybe inspired by Elite but it is far more advanced. In fact we are still finding out new things about it! Also SR (thats the company who made it) is soon releaseing a patch (U3). The beta testers for this patch say that there can be NO lag in a game with 56K players. Which I might say is a huge step beyond other games.

His link's misspelled. You can fix it in your URL line.

There, I fixed the original.

Hardwar was one of the first continious state games that came out IIRC. I suppose it takes a special breed to like it tho, I have been desperately seeking people interaction with hardwar because the only friends that I tried to play it with really didn't get it because their more into action games. The other friend that got me addicted lost interest after the first few games of the demo too. I think you either hate it or love it, now if only we could make our own moths for it...

So then you know about HardNet (http://www.caydilyn.com/~hardnet/hnfull.exe) (this is the download) right? Ninechars made this so we can get to and host games better. PLUS you can chat while waiting to play or setup a game with other ppl in it's chat room. And you it tells you how many ppl are playing in the world before you join!

Agreed. What horror it would be living in a Quake 3 forum, having to read through 890 new posts every day. What we have here is quite enough, I do (against popular belief) have a Real Life.
*runs in fear of CP charging in with solid mathematical evidence, that everything I just said was.. illogical*

Sure. And I'm HotSnoJ.
Seriously if you had a real life you wouldn't be here.

Actually I agree with you on that point; while it would be nice to bring some more people into the community, things may become somewhat unmanageable with too many guys.
I think that at our current state though, it might be nice to have a few more active members, since although we have some 800 people registered here, I don't think our regulars these days number much over 50 or so.
