I've been doing some thinking, and I've come up with an idea that might be pretty cool. (or pointless)
Basically, I was thinking of trying to create a sort of add-on pack for Freespace - a set of top notch models, weapons and possibly more set in the future after Capella.
Essentially so we have a new set of models that allow people to make their own campaigns in this 'future' environment, and to download a whole new bunch of pofs, maps and tables to use in FRED2 to make missions with.
I'm not intending this to be some sort of organised thing, or to be regarded as canon, but simply to be an easier way of grabbing an organised bunch of new ship models.
Basically, the way I think would work is that everyone interested posts a picture / description of the model they are making, we try and keep clear of each others stuff, help each other out when necessary, and gather the final set of stuff in one locaiton.
and, of course, we can use the best existing models.
Actually, now that I think of it, this could be fantastic. Or am I being overly enthusiastic / unrealistic?

It's just the sort of thing that needs to be done. I think HLP itself could even have a section devoted to it, maybe a forum section even.

Idea:
Put all the campaigns together. In this order: Derelict, Warzone, Twilight, and upcoming BWO. put some missions in between, stick em together, add some extra fan made missions, weapons, and ships for multiplayer, and..
-
I don't see why those campaigns and not any other one. See? that project is unrealistic. Nobody will never share the same opinion about models and missions...
-
just ask anyone with a model if they want to donate it - if its upto standard they it can be included same with weapons ands etc - no missions jsut teh upgrade pack
-
I think it's a good idea... It would show some kind of continuality in the camps... I'd say no missions, as I think it should be a resource, not a campaign. Perhaps you could include balanced stats that shows the models were meant to work together.
Also, once BWO comes out, you could include a SOL ships section (if you ask nicely (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif))... I mean, if 3 campaigns need SOL ships, when you don't want them to have completely different aramdas should the campaigns wish to be able to coexsist.
-
Ahh, but what about the Sol stuff from Machina Terra? The models are just as good if not better. How would you reconcile that?
-
Frankly is is unrealistic in many respects.
Everyone has their own concept for what post-Capella should be like.
It would be more realistic to ask for everyone to allow their mods to be public, and to break this "Futurespace" project as a public disclosure and have mod packs to easy access so people can use each campaign setting's craft.

Sorry if i wasn't to clear on the descripiotn..
what I basically mean is a collection of the best mods (both made and under construction), as a sort of alternate unicerse that people can download in a one-er and play about with as an alternate to the original ships for making campaigns.
I guess Ace is prob. closest to what i mean, I did a pretty ****ty job to try and explain it i think.
i'm not suggesting this should be accepted as the only thing or anything - just as an alternative. I can see the Sol ships produced for MT, BWO, etc, the hiden Terror ship, and the Inferno ships being used by people in a similar way once the campaigns are done.
When I was working on TGD, the whole aim behind it was to create a new feel to the game - to try and get a sort of viable future feel that I and others could use for 'add-ons'- but it was too much for me on my own and i failed for that.
-
I'm making all the mods I do public-access. (And yes, I am doing mods. I just don't like the ones I really want and end up throwing a whole lot of material out.)
-
That was what I vaguely meant... It was just the idea of including ships from other campaigns for the site...
-
so, basically, it's juts the HLP ship bank. Maybe make it more user friendly. Hey, HLP gogs! thumbnails are A1-supar (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

But pre-tabled. And maybe with new briefing ani's for some of the ships.
and maybe someone could figure out a new interface screen for the new supercarriers.

But the HLP file is extremely outdated, and contains lots of work that would now bw considered substandard (I think the last time it was updated was when FS was very new- there are mods in there without skins, mods that are useless... all of which I see in no well-maintained archive. I don't think this reflects on the HLP people- I know what it's like trying to make a page up-to-date in one upload, while the stuff to add is constantly increasing. It's just not a useful thing to base it on.
Another thing, how do we decide the best mods to put in? and the table size IS limited, remember, that's another problem with a pre-tabled archive... unless we remove those Geat War frail annoyances.

If you edit out the non-essentials (tutorials, ship descriptions, etc)it's something like 280 KB if I remember right
