We are not officially hosted by HLP, I just persuaded them into providing MT with a forum here a long time ago. That's why we don't have avatars. :)

Seeing the current existing avatars, it'd probably be a capital MT in black background. There isn't much room for anything else.

Sourceforge.  I think, at one point, there was going to be a new engine coded for it.  Maybe.  I joined the community well after MT started, though.

The new engine was supposed to be used not with Machina Terra, but with Terra. Machina Terra would be just a 'test' for the upcoming game. I don't know for sure what's the status on the game itself, but there might be a graphics engine in construction, if it hasn't been abandoned yet.
