I agree that people should use the OT - tag but I dont see whats wrong with OT posts.
It would be a real shame if we were forced by lockings to not debate anything other than games. While some of these OT's get a bit out of hand some of them are really good. I actually only come to the Hard Light section for OT stuff.
We have forums for everything else, source code, art, mods... given that its not really a surprise that this is happening.
There clearly seems to be a demand for OT posts so how about instead trying to crush it, deal with it by perhaps creating an OT forum.
Freespace is an old game, we should be grateful that this comunity is doing as well as it is and is full of talented people.
Lets not push anyone away to other places just because they dont want to talk about games *all* the time.
Many of these things are big important things and its great that they are being discussed and everyone is free to say what they like.
-
Wait a minute- what's NOT OT that belongs in here anyway? I mean, we've got a forum for modding, source code, art, and anything not of the above. BY DEFINITION, every thread here is either OT or should be moved.
-
If you got rid of all OT debates and moved all moding and art stuff to the relevent forums there wouldnt be anything left!
-
You can bet this'll ellicit an admin response.
-
Free speach and all that.
Is that announcement actually due to complaints?
-
I think Carl was just letting off steam. I knew we should've let him keep his Shivan plushy! :D
-
No way I'm giving that back now.
At least not before it's had a good wash. [hides]

How could you do that to a poor defenceless plushy?! :p

Perhaps an OT forum?....

No.

Actually, the one thing I found somewhat strange about the announcement is that, due to Carl's user image, it is taking up a lot of space in the topic listing. I didn't really notice that with the other admins though...
Although yeah, this is effectively the OT forum around here, since we have seperate forums for all game-related stuff/art/campaigns/etc, so there is not much left for this one but OT material. :D

probably because he didn't use the announcement account, that or his image could be part of the title instead of an avatar.
-
um isn't hardlight the OT Forum of the forums..?
-
mildy OT posts such as "i found a cool flash animation" ect. are okay. but now every other thread is about politics and iraq and stuff. basically the forum has been flooded with the same thread a dozen times.
-
I can start a new math thread for a change of pace... ;7
-
I would like a debate forum, a place to discuss and debate contreversial issues with my favorite (only) online comunity
-
Debating is good, but math (and the sciences in general) are even better. How about a whole forum for that stuff? :D ;7

Debates are fine, but some things (such as the iraqi notwar) are being done to extremes. There's no need to have a new thread about it every second day.
-
umm ok so make a forum called "the OT spot"

That is correct.
We're not about to open another forum, especially an OT one. Period.
-
Ok, I'm being a bit harsh. However, world events are not part of the HLP mandate. They are merely an accessory. If you want to discuss them, fine. But don't clutter the forums up with topics about the same arguments over and over again.
-
I agree with Shrike... that politics stuff isn't good, but some OT threads are *cough*hottest woman on the planet*cough*. :p
-
Ultimately people can just avoid political threads by looking at their names. I dont see what the big deal is.
As I've said before we have a forum for everything wihich renders the purpose of this forum questionable. Infact its good that we have this forum for OT stuff because otherwise one of the other forums would end up with all the OT stuff which *would* be annoying.
Like Bobboau seems to be saying this is the only set of forums I go to. I dont want to have to go anywhere else.
-
whatever you do, DON'T lock the sexiest ot-thread. PLIIIIZ

Actually, the way we do it, every "avatar" that everyone has is actually HTML image code in their title.
-
How about a forum for hardware discussion, so if people need techy help, they can go there.

Speaking of which, does vB3 allow multi-avatars?
-
Ppl don't forget HLP is hosting on GAMEspy , and more importantly it's a PRIVATELY owned forum. Shrike, Carl and the rest give a TON of free reign in here, I don't think asking ppl to curb the OT posting is a big thing for them to ask.
-
moral of the story: If you want to post OT go to warpstorm (www.warpstorm.net/forum)

Meh, I don't think this place would have lots of HW discussions anyway. Besides, there are enough HW forums on the net already.

I guess it comes down to game spys guidelines on this matter.
If I was in charge I would seriously consider having a 'general discussion' forum and have moderators to keep things cool.
-
Personally, I like to use the web to get away from all the stupid **** happening to the world, taht I'm powerless to stop. I wouldn't mind not having a bunch of threads about that stuff.

Isn't that exactly WHAT Carl's announcement was about ? ? ?
Hard Light = General Discussions
Carl = Moderator
Annoucment = Keeping things cool before a locking spree

What makes it funny is, there is no war with Iraq.

Umm... If this isn't a Gneral Disussion forum then what does this mean:
The core of the HL forums, home to the latest in news and discussion about anything and everything.
-
The problem here is the number of people starting threads about the same thing. One thread should do the job fine, five threads running on the same general theme is just silly and this is what Shrike and Carl have been talking about. I didn't see anything about stopping all off topic threads.
Also starting a thread just to mention that you're making a pizza or something equally pointless is another no-no. We have some really excellent discussions here on occasion but there's a lot of frivolity too.
...my two pence anyhow.

How about merging them together then?

To a point, thats covered by the blurb underneath this forums title. Why essentially give people free reign to post whatever here and then get ****ty when they take it literally? Yes, I realise that people should have the sense to take it upon themselves to decide whats acceptable and whats not but with a "topic" thats as wide ranging as "discussion about anything and everything" it makes it a little difficult.
-
Hmm, or close the thread that comes later, and then if that continues give a temporaly ban.
Sigh... even about this thread there was a second one already... :sigh:

Yeah, but cdepending on the circumstances, closing the later threads might be a little too drastic. If they spawn a new angle of discussion then closing them would prevent that discussion from continuing wheras merging it into the other would allow both discussions to continue. It'd get a little messy but that'd be a small price to pay.
-
Does all this really matter? I say if it's a clone, give a warning that it is, re direct to the other thread, then close. If it starts a different discussion or another angle, keep it open.
This whole OT thing shouldn't be a big deal, it's a forum and this is the General Discussion Forum... And bassically the heart of HLP other than Modding and Ocasional Renders

Maybe not but the reason behind closing the clone threads is usually to keep all discussions in the one thread and seeing as merging the threads achieves the same result and vB has the facility why not use it?
-
.... because that could lead to confusion... which can be avoided..
why is all this a problem again?
-
Wait. A. Minute. If you want people to stop posting the same thread over and over, why tell people to label every thread here "OT"? The two have nothing to do with each other.
Personally, though, I agree that maybe two threads about any given topic is plenty (two, because of any two one will generally soon take on a completely different aspect of the issue). Problem is, most of these threads don't START politico. They just slowly turn that way after a harsh life on the streets, after being rejected by society and forced into prostitution in order to simply afford to stay alive, then thrown in the...
Anyway. I think a simple solution to the excess of "Current Big Issue argument" threads presents itself, considering how most start- we create an official Outrage Thread, somewhere where people can rail on and on about the collapse of society, as evidenced by poorly forged pictures they saw on Fark.com or their local porn site, when it doesn't fit into any topic at hand, and doesn't really merit a new one. In other words, a little common sense, helped along somewhat by a mod-enforced system that kills all of the stupid "This picture reminds me of how much I hate foreigners!" threads before they get out of hand. Keep it in one place, where nobody has to see it.

Just 3 letters

Lookie, even this thread is being politicised.

ok to help my arguement on OTness
Hard Light
The core of the HL forums, home to the latest in news and discussion about anything and everything.
there :D as for the double/triple topics, that's a different thing.
