In FreeSpace 2, the Meson Bomb is always pronounced "MEE-sahn". But until I played the main campaign, I had thought it was pronounced "MAY-zahn"; at least, that's what I had always heard, and to me it made sense. So I looked it up in Webster's, and apparently both pronunciations are valid - although MAY-zahn comes first. (Curiously, MEH-zahn comes before both of them.) The specific pronunciation guide goes like this:
\ 'meh-zahn, 'may-, 'mee-, -sahn \
So how do you like to say it?
-
I like to say it like the main campaign said it, for some reason, it sounds better to me. I guess people with different accents, different first languages and such, would pronounce it differently.
-
it's like data and data.
-
meh-s'n.
-
Just like they pronounce it in-game...Meson...first option :wtf:
-
Bigg-A** Bomb- oh, wait! That wasn't an option, was it? :doubt:
-
I always learned to say it by the first option.
-
Meh-Sonn
or
what an0n said
-
mee-sohn!
-
the way they say it in the main campaign.
But I'm not english, so what do I know.

:wtf: I'm not English either. But I know the language. There is a difference. :p
-
Bah, I'm outnumbered. Just wait, I'll make a voice-acted campaign all about meson bombs and force you to listen to it my way... :p
-
meh-sohn, the way SHODAN says she is explaining the big hole where one of the meson accellerators used to be.
-
may-sahn
-
MEE-sahn. Although I sometimes say it MEY-sahn...

AAAGH!!!! NOT SHODAN!!! NOOOO!!!!! *Runs screaming*
Anyways:
MEE-sohn

"Baryon"
Much better word, in my opinion, for essentially the same thing.
-
I voted "other" MAY-SON and for no particular reason i am actually english. :HEADZ:
(this is phonetically correct for my pronounciation)

quite incorrect.
Mesons and baryons are two main groups of strongly interacting particles. Their internal structure is different (two versus three quarks) and there's other differences.
-
Mee z'n, so there.

Which makes a HUGE difference if you're making up imaginary futuristic superbombs that wouldn't work in the first place.:p

When it comes to the FS2 weapons, the beams are by far the most realistic. Anyone want to know why?
-
Lasers. Already exist, so we know they work, essentially the same thing.
Except a laser would probably more slowly cook an enemy ship, instead of chopping it up.
-
Well, maybe if we've got enough power, and focus it enough. Sure, it may not be BFRed size but lasers already cut metal in two, abeit from close range....
I personally believe that once fusion power, along with nanotechnology is harnessed to a sufficient degree, laser weapons will become reality.
BTW - how many people noticed on the FS1 boxart that the Shivan fighters were firing beams?

You talking about the vasudan anubis fighters that are firing beams?
-
All I saw was a Typhon.
Anyway, there were beams, after a fashion, in FS1. The Lucy had some primitive beam-thingies- they looked like ****, but they were beam cannons.

Depends on the cover (http://www.mobygames.com/game/covers/gameId,721/gameCoverId,1331/)

More important is the pronuciation of 'beta'.
I'm english, but thanks to FS I'm forced to hate my friends/co-workers/professors who say 'bee-ta' instead of 'bay-ta'.
Grrr...
-
k: Nice. But they look like regular game lasers to me, a bit elongated to look interesting.
-
I pronounce it MAY-sahn (http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/audio.pl?meson001.wav=meson). The MEE-son pronunciation just sounds... illiterate. Like people who pronounce GIF with a hard G, CD-ROM as "CD rome", and say "supposably".
-
GIF as in "gift" right?
"ta" instead of "to"
"mulk" instead of milk... :blah:
props for the dead topic revivage
-
w00t! ZylonBane agrees! That's what I think, too. "MEE-sahn" sounds just as illiterate as "nucular".
Thanks, ZylonBane, for the dictionary link.
And it's pronounced "GIF", like the peanut butter. :D
-
But why would it be like a J? It's with a G. G makes the "Guh" sound like "Gift" without the T, right?
-
Vote bumping=bad
-
*ignores GalacticEmperor* :D
Usually, G before an E, I, or Y changes the hard G sound "Guh" to a soft G sound "Juh". Just like C changes from "Kuh" to "Suh". Gift is an exception. :)
-
Ignore me, eh? *sharpens axe* Well then he won't be suspecting anything, will he...
-
I say you give him the good ol' force lightning ;7
Juh... :ick

Hey, anything on Page 1 is fair game. :p
As for "GIF"... yes it is properly pronounced "jif" (http://www.skizzers.org/andy/stuff/gif/gif.html).

ZylonBane, who are you quoting?
*squints at thread*
Oh, it's GalacticEmperor. Have you finished sharpening your axe yet?
*takes a closer look at axe*
Hey, isn't that Tiara's?
-
Shush... :p
