So, as the title suggests, which do you like more, Freespace 1 or Freespace 2?
-
Second probably, but the first is almost as good.
-
I always thought that fs1 had a little bit better storyline. Some of the fs1 music was better than the fs2 stuff though.
-
FS2. Better voice acting, more ships, and often a better atmosphere owing to the nebula missions. Plus it had the Deimos ;7
FS1 is arguably better played after you've played FS2, IMO, because the shieldless missions at the start are more fun that way, I think.
-
Yeah, I kind of like shieldless missions. Cruisers without beams are actually a threat!!! You can get killed by an Anubis ( Rarely ), that's why I started the TVWar project.
-
both :p

Agreed. Hey, it's Freespace; asking which one of 1 and 2 is better is like asking which flavor ice cream of chocolate or vanilla is better. I like them both! :D
(But vanilla is even better when you put Spanish caramel (AKA Dulce de Leche) on it...which is kinda like saying Fs2 is even better when you start modding.... :D )

Freespace 2. The story got kind of more entangling toward the end and the graphics... and the ships.... and the BEAMS!!!
-
FS1 is the best...

I liked Fs1 better because the Shivans seemed more scary. (I guess that the right word) You have no idea what the hell these Shivans are or what there going to do. The storyline was good but I predicted (sorta) how it was gonna end before i played the last 4-5 missions.
Fs2 is good for its graphics and new ships and weapons, but I'd like more info on how the GTVA discoverd beams and flak weapons. And I sorta didnt like how you jumped from Bosch to Shivans back to Bocsh then to the Shivans, and the Capella nova. Liked the SOC missions. And the nebula missions. Some of the missions though I think could have been made better.

In my DatDB campaign, we're going to have SOC loop missions, quite a few nebula missions and some regular non-nebula missions, all of which occur in Shivan space. And you won't have to worry about pesky Vasudan or Terran rebels gumming up the works (I figured the whole rebel in GTVA theme had been done to death and decided to discard it in my campaign).
I also provide an explanation for the Capella supernova and the motivations of the Shivans' xenocidal tendencies towards all other alien species.
Of course, the only problem with me pimping the campaign now is that it probably won't be ready for at least a year, maybe two...
But I've completed the story aspect of the campaign, now I just have to script the missions, all 90 ( ) or so of them....

It's quite simple.
FS1- Great story.
FS2- Great graphics.
Add to both great gameplay, huge capships, a decent ship-weapon advancement system, and moddability, and you have an awesome set of games. And yes, the Port was intended to bring the story of FS1 into the FS2 engine to improve the way it looks, but not change the feel of it too much.
-
Love your port. Makes it more of fs2ish. I'm doing an upgrade ( Well I was, now its just the TVWar ) that gives it an fs1 feel. Still, the fs1 textures were more detailed, Take a look at the same ship from fs1 and fs2. Find the detail difference.
Oh yeah. Beams. I don't care for them that much, but they are still sweet.
-
FS1, I like both quite a lot but I managed to be more involved by FS1's atmosphere... My opinions probably biased in that FS1 was one of the first quality games I had obtained for the PC in years or something... (before then I had a fleeting interest in PC gaming...)
conclusion
FS1: story, atmosphere and exposure
FS2: graphics, polished feel and excellent everything but the scariness factor (but the "lion's den" was a serious thriller :D)

lack of scariness factor? The destruction of the Psamtik was the second scariest moment in a PC game I have ever seen, since Into the Lions Den (well, maybe a few from AvP the original, and Clive Barkers Undying do fit in the middle).
-
I'm sorry, but having a Sathanas charge at you in 'The Lion's Den' was the only time a space combat game has made me jump!
And I love beam weapons - they're the most realistic energy weapons ever invented.
