While browsing thru the Freespace2.com news archives, I found this:

New Website Launch
Recent News
12.14.98 9:40 AM - New Website Launch
Volition is proud to announce the launch of its new site format. As always, this is the place to get the greatest info on our titles, as well as the latest scoops on our upcoming games.
In the new site design you'll notice subpages devoted to FreeSpace and Silent Threat, our recently released titles. In addition, we're happy to have sections devoted to our three games-in-development: FreeSpace 2, Descent 4, and our currently featured game, Summoner.
We'll be adding more sections, screenshots, and other content on a regular basis, so visit often!
Notice the DESCENT 4. What's up with that? I know there was a community project that never got off the ground, but an official game? Anyone have any info?
-
At one time they were working on D4 but that transformed into Red Faction. D4 got dropped :( I'm not aware of anyone working on it now.
-
Notice the "Games in developement" before that, it's prolly a typo, cause Decent 3 was being made about the same time as Freespace 2...
Or is :v: hinting to something?

I doubt it means anything - I've still got a magasine with an E3 review shortly after 1999 that said one of the most anticipated coming titles was FS3... heh.
-
Don't give up! If Interplay is going down, hopefully :v: or THQ can get the rights to the FS series and complete the trilogy...Or maybe Interplay and :v: /THQ HAVE been and ARE working on FS3 in secret..maybe, maybe not
-
I think D4 would be Red Faction. After all, it's a pretty short jump from the Descent games to the FPS genre- in Descent you move around in tunnels and shoot any bad guys who show up, in FPSes you move around in tunnels and shoot any bad guys who show up. The very minor functional difference I've seen (and I've played Descent, or at least the first one), have to do with the spaceship piloting thing, which just means you can move around a tiny bit more in tunnels, and have more controls to scrabble at randomly trying to get your dude to move while he is gang-pressed by a half-dozen heavily armed Primitives from Hell.

For almost 6 months I think, there was a Descent 4 page on the Volition-Inc website. My my you guys have short term memories :)
There was a few concept art pieces. Later, the project was revealed to be Red Faction. RF had its beginnings in a Descent game, but the direction became very different and thus it became Red Faction. End of story.
-
that and they had to drop D4 once they were bought by thq
-
There was some freaky pic of a doctor like thing on the concepts too ... I think :D

:wtf:

and if they do, then we'll keep *****ing for a FS4 for another eternity  :p
if they do sell the FS series rights, (just curious) how much will it go for more-or-less? thousands of dollars? about how much?
-
Interplay: We'd like, oh, about five million should do it.
THQ: We'll give you ten bucks.
Interplay: Yes sir, thank you sir.
-
i'm serious, because if it's not that much, then perhaps we could buy it, or i could get a friend i know who has a game developing company to get his company to buy it!

*would suggest a community fund-raising if he didn't think it'd completely collapse within a day or two*
-
naaaaa the community doesn't quite come-together in something like this, and besides, the figure would probably be ridiculously high! most of us here are broke teenagers... i was just wondering out of interest what the cost would be more or less
-
Several times what we all could afford together, more or less.
-
Go find Dave and ask him. He should have a rough idea as to what the going rate for the rights are.

Stealth mate, were you not a VBB memeber?
-
I wasn't...:nervous:
What are you all staring at?...:nervous:

Certainly doesn't seem like he ever was.
It's almost impossible to think about more ideas how could you get FS3. Someone has thought about them already, but nothing has never worked.
-
Actually, I'm not looking forward to FS3. Think about this...
When FS3 would be succesful, we would possibly end up with Freespace 75 plus this tiny community here would be probably attacked by hordes of flesh eating shivans...no, stupid 12 years old spammers. :shaking:
-
aquisition of copyrights is not as easy as buying something like at Amazon people
-
Oh god. Not another one of these topics....
FS3 isn't ever going to happen. THQ isn't going to buy the rights, even if it is ten bucks. They're there to make a profit. They're not going to spend another three years and thousands of dollars just to satify 50 fans.
About D4, judging from the profits it made in that past, THQ might consider buying the rights because Interplay isn't interested in working on another one.

Who says it won't make a profit? Freespace 2 got excellent reviews, the thing it most lacked was advertising. THQ still has a reasonable chance of capitalizing on its success (and existing fanbase), since it still has most of the original Freespace 2 team on its payroll, and who enjoy working on Freespace. Granted, daveb and co. might prefer Barbie Fashion Designer over Freespace. It's hard to imagine daveb debating his next Barbie's outfit whilst chugging a Bosch Beer, however. :D

I agree that D4 has more of a chance coming out than Freespace 3, but Interplay's going to want much more for it than the Freespace rights...Interplay selling the Descent rights would be comparable to Blizzard selling the rights to Starcraft.

It's just not the sort of thing that's selling anymore. Right now, the flight sim market is saturated with simply amazing graphics engines, and nothing with a lot of plot, or anything other than fantastic graphics. It's what people are buying, now. When FS came out, things were a tad different- in case you never noticed, FS was NEVER the most advanced game around for long.
Besides, if the FS rights were for sale for so cheap, I'd have bought them and charged you all royalties for mentioning the name by now.

I-War 2 and IL-2 Sturmovik are notable exceptions (probably more so the former than the latter)
-
You gonna tell me I-War wasn't a graphics game? Look at it. Look at the cutscenes. See a difference, without looking too hard?
I think it's debatable whether the game had a point beyond being pretty. It was pretty damn repetitive, and the plot was standard B-movie-esque game fare.
