I think this might be fun to know. Why did you pick the username you have here. I know about Steaks, and ToT's, but I sure would like to know how the hell do people think of names like... well, most of you here.
So... let's begin!
-
I didn't have any particular reason myself... about 7-8 years back I wanted to go chatting in KissFM's Chat city (only god knows why) and I needed a nick. Gortef just popped into my mind... quite quickly in fact... and I have used it ever since :)
-
ehhh... Its my name :p
-
It was the name I chose for my first fs1 pilot... *sentimental moment*
-
I finally found a good name that wasnt used in most system.
-
Got it from a game called Blood&Magic (I think) many many years ago... don't know why did I take it, but I did. There was some guy called Redfang the Reaper in that very good game, but I dropped the reaper away after well, don't remember when.

Hm my nick. Well if any of you remember the show called Swat Kats, in it there is one cool guy/kat called Razor and he kicked ass, had a a good sence of humor and well when I went to VBB, I wanted to use the nick Razor but someone took it allready :mad2: so I tryed Razor_blade. I used it till the VBB was closed. About a year ago, I came to HLP and I used a nick razor_blade for some time but I didn't visit the forums that much. When VBB became soo boring I came back here and signed up as Razor. The nick wasn't taken before  so I settled with it and I am quite happy with this one. It's way better than Razor_blade. Short, crystal clear and cool. ;)

Anyway, I got my name from a WinAmp skin really. The inspiration came from its skin name. I've been using it for like almost 5 years now.:D

I have no idea how I got mine - it's kinda corny but... meh ;)

When i was done playing ( also had a good amount of booze in me ) i decided it wsa time to chat dunno where but i found one and i thought back to the game and there it popped in my drunk head Darkage. same here.
I can be found as lachdanan on some other forums, this one comes from Diablo, I liked the background of that character

I'm named after Palpatine in the Star Wars series. Trouble is, the word 'palpitate' means to throb or pulse  so I decided against it, and went for GalacticEmperor instead. Been using it for, oh, about a year now. I think I'll change it soon, though; it's a pain to give out orally.
-
All my other nicks got banned.
-
Mine popped into my head the first time I had to think of one (that was the quake2 area on the M$ gamezone whatsis)
I actually thought about it sometime later and noticed it was also a kind of anagram of my surname - so it all fits rather nicely.

F-4U Corsair. One of the two coolest planes from World War II.
The other one would be the P-38 Lightning, but I thought that would sound a little messed up since we already had Thunder. ;)

I just typed in a bunch of random junk into my keyboard and it came out be "cp5670." :D

i like music... hence the "beats"... and pete being a common shortening of my real name (peter, duh) it rhymed and made sence.
"Beatspete"

Oh come on, you would have been like :wtf: if I had called myself Lighting. And anyway Corsair is cooler.
Although I could have been your alter-ego as Lightning :drevil:

Look it up :p
Bah, fine for those of you too lazy to do so...
Cannikin was the code name for a 1971 nuclear detonation of the new warhead for the Spartan ABM (anti-ballistic missile) program. Conducted over a mile underground on Amchitka Island, Alaska, it yielded 5 megatons (5,000,000 tons of TNT for those who for some reason don't know) and was the most powerful underground nuclear test ever conducted. Seismic recordings measured 6.85 on the Richter Scale.
Also, indirectly caused the creation of the Greenpeace organization (a bad thing in my opinion :D )

Agreed, not to derail the thread but spandex = good. I'd just never wear it.

I always thought Thunder was some kind of lit-geek reference to the Wasteland. But, then again, only I'm lit geek enough here to think that.
Anyway. A long, long time ago, when I was a little kid, I thought this one sounded cool. Vaguely violent-looking/sounding, and if you sound it out, you get something that sort of sounds like "strychnine", and who wouldn't wanna be named after rat poison?
Anyway, I built up a bit of a reputation in certain trades, and kept the handle so that I'd be recognized by my associates. Now, however, I've gained a bit much notoriety under this name, so I'm slowly changing it to Ryder P. Moses on the few boards I can still go to (yes, it's another lit-geek thing. Free pixel to anyone who gets it)
Other handles you may or may not recognize include Satan and Pistola. Satan's kind of a contextual one.

Mikhael is my character on FurryMUCK (yes, I hang out there). I picked the name because I like hebraic/angelic sounding names, my parents almost named me Michael, and because Mikhael is my favorite variant of that name.
In my first year on line, I went through a lot of names: Zeist, Ariel, M'Riss, Idriss, Sagan, Thorandin, Nin, Pinion, Anais, Asriel, Avariel, Louis, Ruiz, Bastien, Bastion, Spider, Weaver, Gnostus, DelGato, Ruhk, RuhkFerret and Musashiden and about six or twelve dozen more that I can't remember.
I've been using Mikhael for five years now, and I used Ruhk for about three years.
If I weren't using Mikhael, I'd be using 'lrrodrig', which was my username on the network at Uni when I was enrolled there (and is again now! :)) Its never taken, so its a good fallback.

Ashrak is an uber-killer-get-payed-a-lot-guy in stargate SG1 :)

To tell you the truth: Writer's block, and the fact that "Grey Wolf" was already taken on the VBB.
-
Well, when I first registered on the VBB, i registered as Fighter_Captain. Well, later I decided that name wasn't good enough, so I tried to change it to Unknown Target. Turns out that name was taken (inactive) so I switched it to Unkown Target.
That's the story I tell everyone. What really happened was that I mis-spelled it, and thought it was kinda cool to have, so I just kept it:D

I absolutely posetively, 1000000% agree with you. Hey there is a great site dedicated to Swat Kats. There you can download vidoes from the show, maybe some music, Swat Kats game ;7, Play RPG as any of the Swat Kats or new characters, see fan art, listen to sounds, lines and conversations from the film. The site is just too awesome. By the way, there were two seasons but I never got the chance to see season two. Go T-Bone and Raz. Commander Feral is also funny but kinda stupid. Here's the line:
Razor: Keep that missile insolated commander.
T Bone: Yeah this guy really messes up when he blows a fuse.
CMD Feral: What do you think I am? Stupid?!
T bone & Raz: Bingo!
Commander gets angry.
 That was a pretty awesome scene.
Oh the site. SWAT KATS ZONE (http://www.whitestorm.com/sk.html)

My great great great (I don't know how many greats) grandfather, Peter Pitchlynn, was chief of the Choctaw indians in the 1815-1830s. He was referred to as "Alikchi", which was "magic man" or "shaman".
My full name is Thomas Pitchlynn Howell the fifth, and it's scary to see your middle name in the history books

I was kicked out of church for asking "un-christianlike" questions. and the priest called me a heretic (probably in anger or something)
it was quite a shock, but it stuck.

A preacher once called me an "Evil, deceitful, wicked, unholy, blasphemous......" I forget the rest, but to be fair I was threatening him with a knife so I suppose that was to be expected.

no, it would be worse than a batman-lookalike.... no, it's too horrible... I won't tell :p
Anyway, don't really know how I got my nick. Most likely explanation is the reference to 'Hunt for Red October'

What were you asking him?
Heretic: Oh, masterful priest?
Priest: Yes?
Heretic: How many boys have you fondled?
Priest: About 5, why?
Heretic: I was just wondering how I would defend myself if you came after me...?
Priest: Heretic! Heretic! All your dicks are belong to us! Go away!

I was on this trip to France with my school and me and my pals were walking along the street. He was standing on his little box outside the church shouting about repenting and **** (in English for some strange reason, although the town was mostly a haven for holiday makers), then he saw me and some of my obviously un-religious friends and pointed us out. I was slightly less intoxicated than my friends and happened to be carrying a very large, very sharp knife. So I pushed him off his box and against a wall, whipped out my knife and held it infront of his face then said something......I'm not actually sure what, but whatever it was, he seemed to take offence and started ranting. The rest of the evening is somewhat of a blur althought I do seem to remember a cat being involved somewhere along the way.
Gotta love school trips.
Anyway, back on topic..........

I'm Vega after the Street Fighter character. I always like speed instead of say, strength. Seems the smarter thing to do. Same reason my favorite animal is a cheetah. Plus there's the Vega system.
But I still can't figure out where the Mr. came from.

Yes, by westerners, but saying a kami is a god isn't always exact, as many kami didn't have all the traits we'd normally associate with gods. 'Superior being' is a better descriptive term.
Heh, japanese history class, gotta love it.

I got my name from Tell a Story. who was it how saved that to his HD?
-
I got my nick from the fact that the first computer games I started playing were RTS. (That and the fact that I have a memory for military related stuff, don't know why, and Strategic Air Command was something I heard from time to time that I thought sounded cool) I was StrategicCommander for a number of years, and since it is often too long for name entries I just shortened it to StratComm. And yes, I still want to be the guy on the bridge of a Hecate ordering a fleet around rather than flying a fighter or bomber. My choice of nicks reflects absolutely nothing about my personal life, too, so that's a plus. The downside is that my particular nick is often taken on strategy game sites.

Think back to the prime days of Napster. Knowing just plain "Joey" was taken (since they told me so :D ) they offered some alternative nicks I could go by and Joey_21 was one of them, so from then on, to avoid confusion with anybody, wherever and whatever I might get involved with, people will still know me. :)
-
vadar stands for an acronym that i have long since forgotten... i shoulda wrote it down... but that was 8 years ago. And since "vadar" was used alot because of its similarity to "vader", i added the classic _1 to it. As for my alt name Resorath... much of random letters to make a word... worked out good.

I guess so. Doesn't really make a difference in gamelands- you've got Americans, you've got Posh Brits/Eurotrash, you've got Evil East Germans/Russians, and you've got your Asians. That's about it for most games.

Analazon, made it up for a multi-player quake 3 game when it just came out, and I was running it on a 333...
yeah...that was before I learned from Warpstorm that it could be split after the first four letters...and they had lots of fun refering to me as 'anal'...
-
hwo did I get my name, ahh, in a stupid game I cant rember, but then I wanted to play no team, so then Dr.Zero came to mind, later on I thought of , "wouldent it be neat to but a 0 at the end instead of an o" then I used it in Napster and beyond

Whoah. I'm called so many things... Oh well, Basically I started out first as Steba (Which is a nickname my brother gave me).
Then went on to be known as Viper 1, which is still use on IRC today (Used when X-Wing VS. Tie-Fighter came out and I started a small squadron called, You guessed it, THE VIPERS). What else...
Oh yeah, theres Kodiak (Big cudly bear that can rip you're head off for no apparent reason... Like me. :D) which I used for a while.
Then there's my Mutliplayer name, Astro Monkey (Started in Tribes 2, when I formed with my friend the Shadow Monkey Clan), which I still use.
But the origins for Dark_4ce is actually quite simple.... I wanted something that sounded cool. So I came up with Dark Force. It was taken, so I changed the FOR to a 4. Tadaa... Nothing special I guess...

My nick stems from back before I even got the internet. I was trying to think of a name to go by in Yahoo chat (IRC was banned on the school network) and after trying several variations of something I can't really remember (James Bond I think- "Lysergic Acid Diethylimide" popped into my head for reasons I can't even begin to fathom. The misspelling was unintentional but lucky. After it was pointed out to me I discovered the correct spelling, Lysergic Acid Diethylamide, was already taken.
After discovering Freespace it became "admiral_lsd_of_the_gtd_ares" since it sounded cool at the time and since I only had the OEM version of FS2 I didn't know there was already a GTF Ares fighter. It became Admiral_LSD at the VBB since I didn't realise at the time that UBB allowed spaces in nicknames. It's now gone full circle and I've started signing up at places as Lysergic Acid Diethylimide again.

For those of you who may not be aware the name I choose at age 6 as my nickname comes from the 70's robot Getter Robo G (Star Dragon in the US). There were many like him before and after but that is the name I have chosen. Go to the pic site in my sig to see the page dedicated to him... I command you! (except for the Emperor, him I humbly request... I don't mess with ancient religions that can choke me in my mecha!!!)

eh, mine came from when i had my head shaved once,
some people said i looked like a russian spy or somesuch, game my name a slight russian tint: "lukavich turnerofsky" (luke turner)
or just "turnsky" and it sortof just stuck there. as a result, i no longer shave my head..

lets see...my nick...
The demon part comes from my friend calling me a demonic bastard(i laughed at the thought of frying a live rabbit in an oven, so sue me, i was 10.). The 442 part came from the same friend's yahoo ID. his was 336 and i decided that i liked it and came up with my own.
I might switch to DeathBringer in the near future tho, simply because it nearly get me expelled from school:devil:.

Well...Delta was already taken way back when, so...instead of thinking of another, I just slapped the last four numbers of the keyboard on. ^^;

My name is taken from my nickname in RL, the Drummer of Thunder. I got that from playing drums, playing them dam loud and hard (like thunder), and I named my kit the Goddess (I was young, and it still works). So I That was often shortened to DofT, which doesn't cast to much light on intelligence. I was going to use it here but saw that there was a Thunder roaming around, so it be wise not to be drumming on him. So, I thought for a bit, watched stargate, and relised that Thor would be the perfect name. You can find me either as Thor or Thor_DofT.

Anyone who read te elvish thread will know that my name was a sort of half assed Tolkien inspired jobbie which basically means 'to seek understanding'. It can also be twisted into 'mega lamor' but that's Setekh and Styxx's comedy version.
The only other nick I've used is 'Jimmy Ninja' I suppose. It's another comedy based one I usually use when playing counterstrike (a rarity these days).
-
I got mine from a history class around five years ago; it's the title of that book by Thomas Hobbes. I just changed the I for the Y because it looked better. By that time I didn't know it had already been used pretty much everywhere, and now it's too late to change.

Goober5000 was just a completely random name I chose on the spur of the moment. I needed a temporary ID, and haven't gotten around to actually taking the time to think up a new one.
