Title: OT-PC Problems

Somehow, my comps got full of invisible junk which is clogging up the HDD. So i,ve backuped everything i need to and attempted to format the C drive. Which is just wont(Windows XP). So im asking, if i delete my backup drive which is a logical drive, will the 18gig from that drive be added to my C drive?

propably not. maybe if you use partition magic, which I've heard good things about, but never used myself.

Where is everything backed up? Have you put it on a second partition or on removable media?

First check your motherboard supports that size of harddisc in one partition (I had to download an update for mine).

Then I guess Install XP from scratch and I think there all tools in the setup program that will have what you want. If not its fdisk time.

EDIT: Actually I think you may have to use Fdisk

Burned CD. Ideally i want to just reinstall windowsXp and have clean everthing, but it wont let me format any drives.

Look for the diskmgmt tool lurking in XP's system32 folder. Dead handy little app, saves ****ing about with Fdisk.

But like the man says, you'll struggle to format your disk from inside windows... ;7,:rolleyes:, and probably :wtf: as well

You can format the drives from within the XP installer (this has been the case with every version of Windows NT I've ever used including NT4 and 2000). Thats what I always do when I reinstall Windows. Just make sure you format as NTFS ;)

You can also access the Disk Management console from with the Computer Management console accessible from the Administrative Tools folder in either the Control Panel, the Start Menu itself or in the "All Programs" folder of the Start Menu depending on how you have it configured.

You can format inside or outside of windows.

Write all the important data to the CD's,   if you have a CD'R.

All that junk that is invisible, make it visible,  but even the name can fool you.

Or i you want make a disk clean up with the application that brings windows,  i allways mantain the disk by removing,   internet documents,  history,  cookies,   temporary Internet files,  temporary files,  system restore,  and other stuff that i can delete.

So, deleting all the most recent restore point seems to free up about a gig or so, at least on my machine it does. What's that all about, then?

Only non-system partitions... Windows (even 9x) prevents you from formatting the system volume (ie: the one with the Windows directory on it) while Windows is running. NT even prevents you from formatting the boot volume (ie the one with NTLDR on it) while its running.
