Title: Newbie question, problems with converting
Post by: Solatar on October 08, 2002, 06:30:34 pm
Okay, I'm having problems converting .cob to .pofs. None of the progs out there work. They act like they do something, but they never create the new file.

What COB2POF progs. are you using?

I've tried cob2pof cob2fs2 and all the other oens I could find. For some reason PCS won't work either. it gives me crap about "you forgot to group those objects".

I can't get those to work either, but that could just be me.

If you look in the modding section (which is where this question should be anyway) you`ll notice a similar topic that might help you

PCS is okay, but my real UBERGRIPE is the 'you forgot to group these objects.'

BIG SMEGGING DEAL!

I mean, if I want to check that my hull geometry converts properly and at the right size, I still have to add either thrusters or shields! GAAAH!

That's why I often use the old cob2pof DOS software!

That thread didn't help me one bit.

Then this one probably won`t either. Beyond telling you how to open a dos prompt, run cob2pof and then look for test.pof I don`t know what we can do for you. That is all I`ve ever had to do to run Cob2fs2.

Okay, I got it to kind of work in Command Prompt. It says the file needs to be in the bin format.

EDIT:Got that fixed, new error
here's the text

C:\DOCUME~1\MICHAEL>cob2fs2 TUT.COB
Cob2fs2 Version 0.01 10-23-99
Processing TUT.COB

Reading input file...
the data type is '486c6f50' Polh... Polh name: 0,7
   n_vertix=364
   N_facehole=300
 Error: Polygon points > 20

Any knowledge?

LOL !!!

The Group error is about you didn't glued and made a hierarchy structure for the mesh.
Then PCS wil convert the file.

and for Cob2pof
Or Cob2fs2

You put the mesh in the same dir as the program is

Then type

Example:
C:\mesh\cob2pof Ship.cob
Or
C:\mesh\cob2fs2 Ship.cob

Hades: Did you triangulate the mesh?

I got that Vasudan scout off of a thread in this forum, I just thought that if I ran it through a converting prog, I could make it a .pof, and edit the textures.

If it's giving you a polygons points > 20 error then that's not your fault. The mesh needs a bit of work. One of the faces on the ship has more than 20 points. Most of the freespace converters fall over when they encounter that. If you have truespace using polygon draw or triangulating the model would solve the problem. If not you'll have to wait until someone who has it does.

do you mean actually putting textures onto the model? if you do, you can't. you need to create the model and texture it in a 3d proggy. mod view can only change textures already on it.

just glue a local light to the hull as a sibling. :D

and why is everone using dos cob2pof if pcs doesn't work?http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/fs2files.php
the high limits one is much better-no dos! :D

lol, i must have a magic touch, it's never screwed up for me unless i screwed something major in the model. i used to use it all the time too, before i was pointed at pcs.
the only bug i can tell of is that it will always save as fs1 pofs. but even that's simple to fix.
