Title: Ah HA! A challenge..
Post by: Turnsky on October 15, 2002, 09:41:48 pm
since some of us are all in the knack of drawing ourselves in a "creature" or otherwise visages, let us see, how good we really all are and compare what talent (or lack of) that we really have and draw (or get someone else that's better than you) yourself as a "creature" personal it can be anything ficticous or otherwise.

i'm working on one myself i'll post it soon..

Angelfire, so right-click, copy and paste the link.

Yes, I created that myself.  Yes, it was done entirely in a 2D program.  No, its not a render, renders are done using 3D programs.  And yes, I am a fuzzy stuffed duck.

But I'm not blue.  I'm white and yellow, and I'm plushy and fuzzy, with brown shiny plastic eyes.

Title: The Drakhnator challenge
Post by: Stargazer_2098 on October 18, 2002, 04:09:07 pm
Tough I suck at hand-drawing (and on most renderings other then planets and space), I do have a "creature challenge" if anyone is interested.

The creature in mind is a Drakhnator; a creature from my fan-fics (and the main enemy in my short story "Horizons End: Edge of Darkness").

Now here's a quote from Edge of Darkness  to give you a basic idea of how a Drakhnator is supposed to look like:

Quote

...They looked like some kind of insects, many times larger then even the largest Felisian!

They had seven arms, consisting of several rotatable and moveable limbs, spread about their body. Each arm (or leg) ended in huge claws, two for each arm; like pincers, but very unlike those of earth-crabs.
They had glowing red, multiple eyes like the insects we know on earth, but each eye where many times larger then those on earth-bugs, and could be turned in any direction, giving a totally 360 degrees POV.
Out from what looked like their heads, where two antenas; not to different from those we see at earth ants and termites (only many times larger).
From their rear was an flexible tentacle that could resemble a tail, ending in a huge, scorpion-like crescent-shaped claw.
Their bodies where covered with glowing red armor, that looked organicly pulsing and living.

Basicly, they look like a huge crossbread between ants and a scorpions, evolved in and for a Zero-G enviroment.
Remember that their mouth is small and crab-like, almost not present at all. This is a completely alien being; not at all humanoid, and very barely recognizable as an insectoid, if you get my drift.

So; if any of you think you are up to the challenge, and have time and will, I can only say: good luck.  :)

Stargazer.

I play that character online elsewhere, Sandwich. That's where the name "Mikhael" came from. My name is NOT Mikhael or Michael. I'm Louis or Luis (depending on if you're my family or not).

I think this is pretty OK, I drew it with a semi-dull pencil, so it didn't come out as I was envisioning. Here's the link, cause it's really big, and I'm too lazy to scale it down:

cool.. try to get yourself a motorized pencil (i.e Pacer) with at the most 0.5 lead thickness that should eliminate any "dull pencil" woes plus, you'll never need to sharpen it..

Just curious- why swords? I'd think, in a SF gaming/modding community, there'd be more big-ass gun people than fantasy people.

[Edit: This, of course, from the guy who hates to leave home without a weapon of the sharp variety, but that's because I just can't afford a gun, or qualify for a federal license. And am too lazy to make my own.]

It's an improvement on the Doomvac.

Just use a soft brush set on 45* constraints with yer color, then use one about a third of the size that's white or close to white over the middle.

Yer not missing much, judging by the quality of the stuff here... if it was even as good as Akira very often on basic, I wouldn't complain, but I don't knopw how many DragonballZ knockoffs (and episodes of DragonballZ, which still sounds entertainingly obscene) I'm expected to watch before I lose all interest in the genre.

'Course, regional TV's always bad around here. Horrendously so.

The over-use of the lens flare?
Title: Ah HA! A challenge..
Post by: Stryke 9 on November 13, 2002, 12:05:51 am
...Among other things. Last year I had the misfortune to submit a rather nice photograph to a literary magazine whose editors though that it'd be a neat idea to take my picture and apply that swirly distortion filter to it without telling me. Used the factory settings, too. The lens flare is really the least of it- it's just that a good deal of the stuff is kinda nifty to play with, but ANY really obvious Photoshopping is gonna pretty much end up looking corny, and like the creator's a fifteen-year-old kid whose never seen the program before. Everyone knows what the Solarize filter looks like by now- the trick is to learn to use it so that it looks cool, and isn't readily identifiable as a stock filter. And everything in there has its use, but it's generally pretty specific. Some filters that come standard I've never used, and likely never will.

Post by: Turnsky on November 13, 2002, 12:12:53 am
well other that the lens flare, i used a lighting effect on the plas emission to make it look the part..

the rest is tweaking the blending opitions on one of the layers where the beam emission lies..

If I had a complain about yer pic, I woulda made it. Except for the greenish haze, which I don't know about... I guess I DID say that in my best Germish (What, you can have Spanglish but not Germish?), but it still counts.:D

...any reason for the fox theme, or you just happen to like it?

and answering your questions:

stryke, i just happen to like it,( i kinda suck at drawing people)

also i've realised that photoshop lens flares do indeed SUCK.

and as it being the basically the same pic as before, it's the only one i have conveniently colored at the moment.

Seems that it wouldn't be that big a step from drawing anthropomorphic thingies to drawing people... but, then again, I lost any drawing skill I had a long time back. I think there is or was a sample here, just to reinforce my point.:D
