Lets keep it on the topic, ok? And this one is specific. You want to talk about big and little eyes? Do it in your own damn thread!
No offense Thunder, i'm not doing this to spite you or anything, but i think it'd be a good discussion.
So everyone... anyone like anime? if so, what kind? i've never been into Dragonball Z or anything, but if there's a good anime program or two out there i'll be thefirst to watch it.
Discuss!
-
i like outlaw star
-
Actually, once you watch some of the real anime in the original Japanese (with subtitles,) it's not that bad. Compared to Digimon and Dragonball Z, anyway.
-
POKEMON!!!
Ever see Brock's eyes! Now there's a true anime character. Horny and small eyes. :thepimp:
-
I loved anime when I was younger--then I got stationed in Japan. Every geeks dream, right?
Yeah, until you realize that the tiny amount we get over here is actually the cream of the crop. Most of it is crap, just like american animation. For every Pokemon, there's about twenty knockoffs. Even the incomprehensible, really poorly done stuff, like Evangelion got a near verbatim ripoff.
Gimme Canadian CG animation any day.
-
The best anime show I've ever seen, in terms of art and sound(voice acting and music), is without a doubt Cowboy Bebop.
-
good anime is hard to find, as for the eyes, as long as it's not disproportionate.. it's fine by me.
-
How could a cartoon not be disproportionate?
And if Dragonball Z is the cream of the crop, then I have lost what little respect I ever might have considering thinking about maybe having for the Japanese animation industry.

Not at all, I'm glad you did - it's a good topic of discussion, just not in my thread ;)
Personally I like the whole design of anime faces, large eyes etc... contrary to what people say it isn't all big breasts girls etc. For a showcase example check out Skuld and Belldandy - perhaps even Urd and Mara. Sure they have breasts but they're proportional, certainly not over the top and definitely smaller than some of todays real life photoshoot stars.
The other point I'd like to address is that "they look nothing like real people". Of course they don't! They don't attempt to be, it's a certain style - a way of representing charachters, but they never ever set out to represent a real human charachter or to be accurate in that manor. Hence big eyes, the ability to fly and so on are all perfectly acceptable.
As for good anime? mikhael is right, for everyone hall-of-fame movie or series there is, there'll be at least one near-copycat of the same thing. If you want to check out some decent anime try:
Akira (Famous, Brilliant)
Princess Mononoke (Also Brilliant, Inspiring)
Neon Genesis Evangelion (Haven't seen all of it, but big bio-mechs rock)
Oh My Goddess (I prefer the comics to the OVAs but it's a matter of taste - it's still light hearted, funny and yet something pure as well)
Spirited Away (I've not seen it but a friend who shares similar tastes says it's great)
There are more, but those are the ones that really spring to mind. Look around, there's lots of review sites.

considering there's about a thousand anime series out per year, there is obviously a lot of trash.
As for good series, well, depends what you like:
-fantasy
- slayers ( comical )
- The Chronicles of the Lodoss War ( serious, originally based on AD&D, if you wonder )
- Berserk ( realistic in the treatment of battles etc, but a few mythological element too, and the hero has a huge sword, which may repel some people )
- Those who hunt elves ( Weird, ever wondered how a russian tank was doing in a fantasy universe? :D )
-science fiction
- Cowboy Bebop ( story of a bounty hunter, awesome )
- trigun ( hilarious on the first part, quite depressing on the second. an excellent postapocalyptic story )
- gundam ( mechas -personnally I hate the Gundam designs, but the series themselves are quite nice, with tortuous plots that keep twisting )
- Macross ( you've seen robotech? well, it's the first macross series translated by the US, I simplify but that's it. If you say it's old and look uggly, it's true for the first series, but try macross plus some day for exmple )
- Vandread ( excellent series, funny as hell, and with a damn lot of very impressive CGI space dogfights )
- Gunbuster ( mecha, but the first part will please all the scientist geeks around )
-comical
- Love Hina ( you don't know love hina? your loss :p )
- Chobits ( hard to explain, but quite nice, tho I'm not that fond of it )
- Golden Boy ( damn hilarious, but to please all the anime detractors, it's clearly for mature audience )
- FLCL ( what yopu get when an anime team works under LSD -there's even a parody of southpark in it at some point -yes, the characters look/talk exactly the same then )
-romance
there's too many of them, in fact ( I guess Ah! My Goddess can be put there for exemple )
-cult ( will, for me, you have to see these ones )
- City Hunter ( the series can't compare to the manga, but it's still very good )
- Cobra ( you don't know cobra? your loss )
- Nadia, the secret of blue water ( Disney completly ripped the plot and many scenes of that series to make Atlantis, and it won't stand to the original )
- Blue Seed ( won't write any more descruiptions, too tired, but this one is among my favourites )
- Evangelion ( controversial, but very popular none the less )
- escaflowne ( even me ticked to the chara design on thi one, but the fact is, just like anime in general, when you try, you get used to it very fast. it's fantasy with fantasy-style mechas, sounds odd, but works great )
I'm waiting eagerly for Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, the series based on the manga ( there's also a pretty famous movie ), I've seen the first episode, it rocks
[/list]
and many others, but this post is long enough already.

The first anime series I ever saw were simultaneous, and thus became my favorites:
Star Blazers (move over ENTERPRISE!) the original starship crew saving the Earth from the bad guys... BIG GUN! (Yes I want that Yamato...)
And four of the Five Go Nagai series bundled together and horribly dubbed by Jim Terry Productions (same people did the voices for each series):
Star Vengers (Getter Robo G: Star Dragon, Star Arrow, Star Posiden) THE ORGINAL robot transforming show. Before voltron, before transformers, before all that crap (go bots and such) GO Nagai invented that concept (HE THE MAN). And although I didn't like the new robot I whole heartedly reccomend you all seeing GETTER ROBO ARMAGEDDON 12 part DVD series released last year. A reinterpritation of the original and a conclusion that makes robot fans say :wtf:
Oh hot dam reminds me... Do any of you remember that messed up 80's cartoon Tranzor Z???
Guess what... It was actually Mazinger Z! The first robot cartoon made by Go Nagai that broke ground in the industry. Horrible dubbing (no swears - darnit!) and script changes hosed it but there for history. I denied it was mazinger till I did research a few years ago... I had all the 24" tall robots as a kis and the Mazinger I had was actually the next version Great Mazinger but the translation was horrible so I never knew one had come before. Great Mazinger was cool as hell. and last year 2001, Mazin Kaiser came out. See this video! Kicking mech moster A$$ all over the place.
back to yesteryear, don't forget to look up Grendizer, Danguard Ace, Gaiking, and Brave Raideen. The rest of the REAL Super Robots.
More recently I like:
Gasaraki (wierd mystical exo/mech combat a few years from now) cool made up historical secrets...
Super Atragon (the secret from the end of WWII that never was revealed must save the Earth)
Macross the Movie (dubbed by austrailians) yes in 1984 robotech debuted on American TV and this movie cam out in Japan. This movie have 3 times better graphics. I saw this movie in 94 or 95 and Said WOW! When did this come out! The Animation no one wants you to see! All the Macross stuff ENHANCED.
Martian Successor Nadesico ( didn't like it at first but by the 3rd episode I loved it) Plus the Gekiganger parodies of the 70's robots!!! Go Gekiganer III !!!Gekigan Flare! We must have a Gekifest soon...
Vampire Hunted D (and the sequel: Bloodlust) Classic , er futuristic vampire sh*T!
The Slayers / Record of Lodoss War/ The Sorcerer Hunters / Orphen / I forget many more fantasy, oh yeah BASTARD!!! (He rocks!)
Tekkeman Blade II (never saw I)
Detenator ORGUN ( awesome robot/invasion take)
AKIRA (Psychic Armageddon is cool and bio degradable)
Warriors of the wind (hey I was like 8)
Gundam /Gundam Wing/Gundam X (Gundam V looks silly and I didn't like Gundam Z)
The New Gundam (oops came out in 96 but release on American TV this fall) Gundam Fighter G is so/so... Not really thrilled except for the nueral control suits...
[If this post is too long stop reading....]
Macross Plus (cause of superior graphics and interesting take on test pilots verses regular military stories)
Macross 7 (took some getting used to, especially caus I only have subtitle, now I look for every FIRE BOMBER song I can get. They are the fiction band name for a REAL BAND that rocks!!! The hero uses song to stop fighting and promote peace, but the military wants to use him as a weapon. Prepare for a sing along Alpha1 the mod elements is being developed!!! :drevil: "POWER TO THE DREAM! POWER TO THE MUSIC!"
Bubblegum Crisis (the original)
Bubblegum Crisis 2040 (the TC remake)
(Both have AWESOME rock music)
Project Ako (the original, the rest are too silly) there's something about a super powered 15-16 year old high school girl who kicks A$$ and no one makes a fuss over it... :)
Battle Anglel (nuff said to good to ruin, see it)
Captain Harlock (all shows) the original space pirate! (Yeah I want the Arcadia too)
[End of part I]
-
A continuation of my FAVORITE animes:
Ninja Team Gatchaman (Battle of the planets/ G Force/ Eagle Riders) - the five bird costumed heroes flying in the firey Phoenix, saving the Earth from the evil forces of a he/she...
Princess Mononoke (see it)
Ninja Scroll (SEE IT if you are a ninja fan!!!!!) Jubei Yagyu ROCKS!
Gal Force (all female crew kicks ass , made befoe SOL BIANCA and New Universe (both similar)
M.D. Giest (If you like no nonesence killing he's your man. The Most Dangerous soldier ever!)
Fist of the North Star (A kung FU bloodfest of exploding organs and amputated limbs! Ken needs to be in a ninja scroll movie!)
ya ya ya ya ya ya ya (you're dead... I'm what ARGH!) Delayed body implosion :wtf: YUK!
Evangelion was okay for teh first 8 episodes but then they get wierd on the audience and the story drags with religion ,: blah: :blah:: blah:) BUt teh mechs are cool and the ideas are original.
That's all for now
I'm sure there are 50 or 60 more but I just got outta work and can't think... L8tr!!!
-
I tried to avoid the oldies, otherwise you have saint seiya, harlock ( of course :p ), etc etc.
hehehe, fist of the north star ( Hokuto no Ken ), now that is really about fights :p
whototototototototototototo! :D
The series is better tho.

I hope you're being sarcastic.

no he's not :blah:
-
i hate anime. it makes me feel like puking. just the way it looks is just, eich, it's wrong. all the people look like they're retarded. in my college, they have a bunch of banners all over the building advertsing an anime convention. i tore them all down. i hope the entire art form is wiped off the face of the earth.
-
I must agree with Carl there on the artistic style; as for these shows themselves, I have never seen them, but some of the names in those lists sound pretty ridiculous... :wtf:
-
and i agree with Carl too. they don't look human. little punks with perfect bodies, big breasts, massive eyes, small lines of mouths, etc.
non-realistic
maybe it's just me :p
-
Did you read anything I said? If it was supposed to reflect how a human really looks then it'd be different. I hope you don't treat people with facial disfigurations with the same attitude you hold for this form of art! Oh, they don't look human... ban them!
Sheesh... have an open mind!
-
i don't really care if they look human or not, after all, most cartoons don't. but anime is just sickening to me.
-
Why? I don't understand the problem of it - I mean at first you sounded like you didn't like it because they didn't look human, but if thats not it then whats wrong? I mean it's a form of art... perhaps you've just viewed some bad examples of the style? There is such a thing as bad anime ;)
-
it's just majory unappealing to me. the way they look it's just...arggh *cringe*
-
Heh, well - fair enough I guess, at least you aren't critisising them for not looking human enough - I can respect that :)
-
haven't you ever seen something that made you sick to your stomach?
-
To be fair, my tastes in "art" are very eccentric and confined, so I will not bash this stuff on that premise; what seems worse to me is that the series and characters all have these really strange names... :wtf:
-
Carl: Anime, not hentai. It's sort of different, because there aren't so many improperly-placed tentacles.;)

Not even close. I'm being quite accurate. Evangelion's quick-cut "MTV" style editting puts me off. The audacious cel reuse is absolutely comical ( there's a conversation between two characters in a car at night. the save ~10 cels are used for the entire conversation). While there was wonderful visual design and thought put into the EVA units themselves, everything else (including the enemies) was crap. Finally, the writing, which started out merely tepid, was, by the end, torturous beyond belief, with incomprehensible reversals and illogical decisions. The plot turned to a morass of garbage that makes Marvel Comics retroactive-continuity editting look SANE.
It was typical latter day Gainax trash: start with a few good ideas, market the hell out of it, and hope no one notices that they started pumping out a series before they'd written a story.
Now, that's not to say there's no good anime. I like some of it. Honest. Its just that most of it is beyond bad into the full fledged realms of SUCK. Think Daikatana and Mortyr kinda suck. TeenWolf the cartoon kinda suck. NO-Freespace3 kinda suck.
-
Well... I can't really add anything to the lists allready written :P
hmm... not sure if Dual was there...
Anyway, I like allmost allkinds of anime, hentai is something that I really dislike.
err... nuff said...
-
two words: Cowboy Beebop.
This is the ONLY anime that I have seen that I don't end up laughing at or despise for one reason or another. :)
-
i couldn't care less what the story is or if the plot is good or anything. one look at it and i feel like punching someone's face in.

interesting comment from a Shivan.
-
actually they ARE supposed to look human... and that's why i don't like them: because i've never seen any japanese cartoon where it's not 'japanimation' or 'anime' or whatever. and it's quite the opposite, i've never seen an asian with eyes as big as anime and mouths as small... disfigured or not! it's non-realistic, and it's annoying
-
The NEW Minmay attack of the UN SPACY....
We'll just post big A$$ pictures of anime (hentai or super deformed) all over our ships and the Shivans will be Psycholgically unable to fight as they will be forced to retch uncontrollably! Am I a genius or what? FS3 When anime attacks!
Carl ( and community)... there are 4 types of anime:
1.) normal pokemon type (mostly normal characters except for big eyes... Macross, Lodoss War ect...(G - PG-13)
2.) Super Deformed (UGH I hate this the most!!!!!!) (G)
3.) enhanced CG mix (like the new Harlock or Vandread). Titan AE tried this and they messed up, was weak. (pg13-R)
4.) Hentai (:p )(R-XXX)
So you see not all anime is the same. It's like saying
"I HATE American movies, they're all just CRAP!" lumping them into one category (XXX)... All that sex, drugs, and violence... Obviously he hasn't see Akira yet, weak on the sex but plenty of the other two ;)
Historical Note:
Blame it all on DIsney!!! At the end of WWII there was a little thing called The Reconstruction. See that's when the Evil Americans came in and made Japan a Democracy, took away their right to arms, got them addicted to the stock market, oh and the last unspeakable crime...... Soiled the art for known as animation. Back then their anime was an art form (like Kabuki Theather). Now A whole generation was bombarded with:
BIG EYES
NON-Porpotionate and often unrealistic characters
Cheesy Dialouge
(Need I go on?)
Ok now that generation grows up and makes anime series... Guess what they make:
BIG EYES
NON-Proportionate and often unrealistic characters
Cheesy Dialouge
(Need I go on?)
I appluade the efforts of serious animators regardless of nationality who have the courage to break away from the shadow of the Disney Legacy and bring mature issues to their audiences (from global warming - armageddon), with realistic looking characters, superb dialouge, and well thought out plots...
I will give credit to a movie from 2 years ago Disney made that was good enough to acknowledge: The Iron Giant. I would rather children see THAT about war and violence and learning to live together than the MINDLESS violence of Tom and Jerry. Hell when I was 6 I said "What the hell is this crap?" Then I found Starblazers and Force Five (The Nagai tv shows) and said "This is so F**king cool!" (I was cute at 6 wasn't I?)
BTW have any of you noticed that most of the characters in anime (Especially heroes) resemble Americans - non- Asians? Hence the BIG Eyes (You Qui-Lo Round eye Gaijins!)
Yup that's me and proud of it! :eek2:
-
i don't like any of it
and Titan AE was pretty well animated, but i didn't like it!

Because I don't like crap, generally? I'll take the good anime (someone mentioned Detonator Orgunn up there. Macross before Macek raped it, Mononoke Hime. Good stuff). You can find it if you dig deep enough into the festering crap.
