As many guesses as you want as to how I did the Doomsday Machine itself. :D ;7

It's something to do with the Typhon textures or Subspace tube, I'm sure...

Looks like he took a picture of something shiny (a pot-roast, a huge turd etc), then copy-resize'd it a few times and screwed around with the lighting and colour balance.

Or covered a water-bottle in tar.

Post by: Star Dragon on October 16, 2002, 04:04:54 pm
I just got done downloading the sounds for it (weapons fire) and was wondering: (1) Is it in game? (2) can we put it in a ST mod? (3) can I have it anyway ;7

BTW that is a cool A$$ed render! That should have been the cover of the ST Novel (Picard)  VENGENCE, when the Doomsday Machines BIG BROTHER comes along and Picard must stop it.

"Sir 2 Borg cubes are engaging the DM, and their getting their A$$es kicked!"

I fell outta my chair when the Admiral ordered Picard to help the Borg! F-that!

Turns out the origianl DM was a protoype built by Guinan's race and sent to to Borg space (Earth was in the way, an accident). They were finishing the REAL WEAPON when the final Borg atttack happened. Centuries later the weapon is activated and now we have another DM going near Earth to fight the Borg...

I love the smell of retroactive continuity editting in the morning! It smells like... a festering, dead, wet dog that's been rolling around in kimchi.

hehehe:

(1) No, it isn't (Thunder, do you find this amusing at all? ;7)
(2) Yes, you can
(3) Yes, you may.

Wondering if I lost my mind? Nope, sorry - not yet.

An0n is the closest so far - it's a picture, a photograph, of something, not a render.

However, I was working on a model of the doomsday machine, lemme dredge up a screenshot. Hold your horses.

Oh, and BTW, the novel is Vendetta, by Peter David, and regardless of mikhael's views, retroactive continuity editing absolutely rules under 2 conditions:

1 - When it's done by Peter David
2 - When it's not explaining contradictions, but filling in storyline elements never touched before.

Now, lemme find that screenie.

Meh. Peter David honestly rings no bells for me (the last Trek novel I read was.. um.. Prime Directive I think. That was before half this board started elementary school).  RetCons are almost never done well, and anything that involves Guinan is right out. Next to making Q a recurring character, Guinan is the worst Trek concept ever to get cast.

BTW, is that silvered air ducting, like would come off the back of an electric clothes dryer? Or perhaps airconditioning ducts for use in drop ceilings?

Yeah, by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens. That was a good one - really mysterious-like up till the end. Beware the Vacu-Ants! ;)

To be fair, you should at least try Peter David, though. Go pick up Vendetta. It's the only ST book I've read over 10 times. ;)

Out of curiosity, what is it about Guinan you don't like?

Nope and nope. :D Now, on to the screenie! ;7

The Doomsday Machine / Planet Killer - 355 polys, non-triangulated. Figure a maximum of twice that after triangulation.

Sweet model.

Guinan, like Q, existed entirely as a plot device throughout the series. She was never a fully formed character, just this convenient way to explain something away. Don't understand why something is the way it is? Go ask Guinan. Mucking about in Earth's past? Run it past Guinan, she was there. Doomsday Machine coming toward Earth? Little did you know, Guinan's daddy was playing about in the machine shed one day...

Now, is it one of those children's plastic tunnel things? I'm almost certain I see a helical structure supporting some sort of flexible 'skin', so its gotta be a hose/duct of some sort. The tunnel thing is my last guess.

Ok, I can see where you're coming from. I guess I never thought of it that way because I never saw the series with anything even approximating consistancy. :-/ Oh well, she's not used in such a manner in Vendetta - I don't think. I haven't really read it with that aspect in mind, but I think I should be able to tell after reading it a dozen times. :p Go read it - it's quite the novel. :)

Yes, that's Rhino. You can apply a single texture to each face, and with v2 you can also apply a bumpmap. But you have absolutely no choice as to how it gets applied to that face, no UV mapping, nothing.

To answer your question, you can choose a texture with a polygon selected, hit the multicolored ring button - object properties, IIRC.
