When is 99 more than 100?

when you type the words?

'ninety-nine' has 11 characters including the hyphen while 'one hundred' has ten.  This is debatable if you count the space in between 'one' and 'hundred' as a character...which means my answer is probably wrong.

When the party says 99 is more then a 100, then it is only logical that 99 is more then 100, and 99 was never less then 100, thats absurd.

Does this have any thing to do with ice creams?

Aha! OK, in theory 99% of C is faster, since you can never actually reach C - and if you did you'd just be stuck there, what with time being all ****ed up. So going at 99% of C would appear to be faster.

Hur hur... I dun fysics

wait wait i got another one

if you convert 100 to binary, you get 01100100, add all the ones and you get 3. If you convert 99 to binary, you get 01100011, add all the ones and you get 4!... unless i screwed up my conversions.

GOLF!

So in Golf.. a score of 99 is worth more than 100

 ...  yeah don't forget about that classic golf rule.. if you go over 100, you automatically lose

question: does this have anything to do with speaking Hebrew?.. I am crap at hebrew.. haven't practiced in a looong time

Nope - nothing to do with Hebrew, Israel, or anything of the sort (might want to try asking that question over on that other "Guess it!" topic, though. ;) :p )

When/why did you study Hebrew?

I've also studied hebrew a while back when I still attended the Jewish school here. I was never any good at it though. The only word apart from hello I remember is "Sheket" which is (if I'm correct) "Quiet" or "Shut up" or something on that line...:D

Anyway, 99 is more than 100, because 99 inches is longer than 100cm? I'm just guessing here...

That would work in certain cases. Such as when there are two sets  of peanuts, 99 packs and 100 packs. If the one with 99 packs has, say 101 peanuts per pack and the one with 100 packs has 99 peanuts per pack, then the total amount of peanuts in the 99 pack set is bigger than the one in the 100 pack set.

See, as simple as that.

...and why on earth have you chosen peanuts for this example??? :D

Ok, 1 and 3 of those are in Hebrew; they go as follows:

Chutzpah: Nerve (as in "You got some nerve!"), with a touch (ok, more than just a touch) of rudeness.

Bris/Brit: Celebration? Ehhhh, sort of - I'd classify it as more of a ceremony. "Brit" is Hebrew for "Covenant", BTW.

You put something to cook in the microwave. Hit "Cook time", and enter the time. If you put 99, it'll be 99 seconds. If you put 100, it'll be a minute.

It is good to have you here, lonelybabe.  Flamethrowers are located beneath the seat infront of you, the seatbelts don't work, in case of emergency, exits are to either side and at the rear, and if you see any Shivans crawling in the ductwork, its probably just Carl.

"Exits to either side and at the rear," "In case of emergency, your life jacket is located under the seat in front of you," etc., are components of the speach they give you before takeoff on an airplane.  I always assumed that that's what we were mocking/deriving our stuff from; it would never have occurred to me to think otherwise, it seemed so obvious (to me, at any rate).

Nope, it's not the birth of stars, either.  Remember, it not that the answer hasn't happened in the last hundred thousand years (which stars have probably be born in, anyway), but that it never happens in the course of a hundred thousand years.

If two stars are born back to back, it has happened somewhere in the course of a hundred thousand years, because it happened somewhere in the course of time.

Maybe the answer is "the course of a hundred thousand years".  Because you can take any given period of time and say that 100,000 years are just ending or just beginning, but it takes that long to go though a complete cycle.

Okay, here goes:  The answer is.....

The letter M!

minute, moment, hundred thousand years

If two stars are born back to back, it has happened somewhere in the course of a hundred thousand years, because it happened somewhere in the course of time.

no no no, you can't say it that way, if that's what you meant, then say "and yet, it never happens in the course of time"

you can't have the time period change on a whim because it could be any 100,000 years, like Goob said.

Edit: wow... that was... :doubt:

Precisely.  That's why it isn't an answer to the riddle.

Ok, some of these are simple, some are not, and I'm not gonna pick and choose - I'll do them in order, so here goes:

Hehehe - figures that the ladies of the place would figure that one out. :p

Ok, next one requires a bit more thinking:

A man owned a fox, a duck, and a bag of corn. One day he was on the bank of a river, where there was a boat only large enough for him to cross with one of his possessions. If he left the fox and duck alone, the fox would eat the duck. If he left the duck and the corn alone, the duck would eat the corn. How did he get safely across the river with all three of his possessions?

Yep, it's the Earth's rotation. The distance is measured between the sun and the "point" of earth upon which the city is built. Of course, it works for any point on the Earth... ;)

wow, it actually was that? :D

Here's one I remember:

A rich Persian nobleman died and in his will had left his wealth to one of his two sons. The provisions of the will stated that the two sons are to have a camel race between given checkpoints and the winner would get all the money, except that whichever man's camel finishes last is the winner. So the two started their race but by the end of the day neither of them had moved at all, since each wanted the other to get ahead of him. Exhausted, they checked into a hotel and told the innkeeper about their problem. He gave them two words of advice. The next morning they started off again, except that each brother was trying to get the finish line as fast as he could. What did the innkeeper tell them?

Dang, must check this forum more often. I coulda answered that camel one too. (Heard a different version, same answer.) Now here's an interesting riddle to stump would be Riddlemasters:

King Khalzol's kingdom is long gone.
Take five steps to the site of his grave:
The first means to think over,
The second is over your thoughts,
The third means one of something,
The last must be stronger then anything,
The whole reveals everything.

Now tell me, why did King Khalzol's subjects bury him in a copper coffin?

You're right! :D
(It's a trick question, but there is a riddle in the first part which I will now explain by quoting the relevent text from ElfSong by Elaine Cunningham.)

Quote
What is it to mull but to think over?
Speaking quite literally, what lies over men's thoughts but their hair?
The word 'a' means one of something, as in 'a pomegranate.'
A hold, or fortress, must be stronger then any force brought against it.
Put together, one obtains the site of King Khalzol's grave: Mulharahold, a city to the south of the Mountains of Copper. The copper coffin, of course, is the clue that confirms the conundrum's answer.

The above connundrum has nothing to do with why they buried him in a copper coffin, thus it could trick a Riddlemaster who gets distracted by the extra stuff into giving the above, but wrong, answer. :)

Oh man, after all those stupid "d'oh!" questions, you guys are totally asking for this one. You're driven me to unleash the dreaded Three Doors Problem! :drevil:

The Three Doors problem, also known as the Monty Hall problem: Say you're a contestant on a game show. There are three doors. Behind one door is a prize. Only the host knows which door has the prize behind it.

You get to pick a door. The host then picks another door (one without a prize behind it) and opens it. He then offers you the chance to stick with your original choice, or switch your choice to the remaining unopened door.

So the question is: What gives you a better chance of winning? Staying, or switching?

There are no tricks or gimmicks to the phrasing of this puzzle. It's a straight exercise in statistics. Those of you who already know this one... shhhh!
Title: Brain Teaser
Post by: Knight Templar on October 27, 2002, 09:47:24 pm

What Sandwich said.
Title: Brain Teaser
Post by: Sandwich on October 28, 2002, 04:24:17 pm
Huh - actually, now that I think about it, the chances would be better if you switched doors. Here's why:

Originally, the chances of you picking the door with the prize are one in three, or 1/3rd. So statistically, it's unlikely that you have chosen the correct door. Elimination of a non-prize door does not change that fact. So despite the fact that starting from the 2-door phase would give you 50-50 chances, the fact of the matter is that in entering the 2-door phase, you are twice as likely to have already picked a prizeless door than the one with the prize.

So KT's second guess is correct.

Since the question is which is 'best' not certain, I say Switch.
Since there are three doors theres a 66.6% chance you will pick the wrong door.

It seems to me, that if you're standing there with two doors and one has a prize behind it, it doesn't matter what you do because you will still have a 50-50 chance of getting it right. (Or getting it wrong.) Staying or switching won't change that.

Unless the gameshow host would have simply opened the door and granted the prize if you had chosen correctly, in which case you would know you had chosen incorrectly by his giving you a second chance.  But assuming that he would not have done so, then as above, and "Which is better?" is a meaningless question.

If the gameshow host would open your door if you found the prize, and open a door that doesn't have the prize if you didn't find it, then everyone would win. ;) The original phrasing suggests that the host would always open a door that the prize is not behind.

M'kay, here goes:

Three men stopped at a hotel one night and went to three seperate rooms. The charge for the rooms was $10 each, so the men paid $30 all told. The next day the desk clerk found out that the rooms could be renter for $25, instead of the $30 paid. Accordingly, he gave the bellboy the rebate to take to the three men.

As it happened, the bellboy was not entirely honest, so he gave each man $1 and kept $2 for himself.

Now, each man, after receiving the $1 rebate, paid only $9 for is room. That made $27 for all three. The bellboy kept the other $2, which makes $29. What happened to the other dollar?

There is no missing dollar. Start off with $10 times 3, making $30. The clerk sends up a $5 rebate, supposed to make the end total $25. The three men each get $1, making a total of $3, add to that the extra $2 stolen, and you get $5 - the total of the rebate.

10+10+10=30

5 refund = 25

9+9+9=27

27-25=2

So, no missing dollar. :p

MEh - that one was too easy. So's this one:

A man went to town one day with $5 in his pocket, but returned in the evening with $15.

He bought a hat at the men's furnishings store and some meat at the meat market. Then he had his eyes tested for glasses. Now, this man got paid every Thursday by check, and the banks in town are open on Tuesday, Friday an Saturday only. The eye doctor does not keep his office open on Saturday, and the meat market is not open on Thursday or Friday. What day did the man go to town?

Mrs. Harrison has 6 lovely hats, 3 blue, 2 yellow and one pink. Alice, Betty, Cindy and Debbie are lined up as shown below. Mrs. Harrison puts the hats on them so they will not see what color hat they have on.

Alice->Betty->Cindy->Debbie

Alice can see what color of hats Betty, Cindy and Debbie are wearing, but not her own (since it is on her head).
Betty can see what color of hats Cindy and Debbie are wearing, but neither her own nor Alice's.
Cindy can see what color hat Debbie is wearing, but neither her own nor Betty's nor Alice's.
Debbie can not see any of the hat colors.

Mrs. Harrison ask them what color of the hat they are wearing. Alice said she can not tell. Betty said she can not tell either. Cindy also can not tell. However, Debbie was able to tell what color she was wearing after knowing that everyone else could not tell.

How did Debbie figure out what color she was wearing?

Got it - Debbie was wearing pink.

My solution method: Group all the duplicates together until you run out of duplicates.  Messy, but it works.  (I was feeling too tired to put much effort into thinking rationally about it.)  Now I want to know what the intuitive solution is. :D

I think it's Blue, here's my reasoning:

First start with Alice, since she doesn't know what she's wearing, there has to be at least two distinct choices out of the hats she can choose. Since three people have taken hats, there are three left to choose from. Possiblities are:

Alice

YYP
BYP
BBY

Now moving on to Betty, since she doesn't know what she's wearing, not only does there have to be at least two distinct choices, but no matter what color hat she chooses, the remaining three unchosen hats have to match the above condition for Alice. These leave:

Betty

BBYP
YYBP
BBYY

To clarify, for the BBYP possibility, if she has a blue hat, then the remaining hats are BYP, similarly if she chooses a yellow or pink hat, the remaining hats are BBP and BBY respectively.

Now moving on to Cindy, again since she doesn't know what she's wearing, not only does there have to be at least two distinct choices, but no matter what color hat she chooses, the remaining four unchosen hats have to match the above condition for Betty (which in turn will match the condition for Alice). All that is left is:

BBYYP

If blue is taken, BYYP is left, if yellow is taken, BBYP is left, if pink is taken, BBYY is left.

Finally, the only remaining hat is blue, which belongs to Debbie.

My easy explanation for anyone interested:

1) If none of Betty, Cindy, or Debbie were wearing a blue hat, Alice would know she must be wearing a blue, but she does not know, so one of the other three must be.

2) Therefore, Betty knows that at least one among herself and the girls in front of her are wearing blue.  If neither of the girls in front of her were wearing blue, she would know she was wearing blue, but she does not know, so at least one of Cindy and Debbie must be wearing blue.

3) Therefore, Cindy knows that if Debbie is not wearing blue that she must be, but she does not know what she is wearing, so Debbie must be wearing blue.

The Paycheck Puzzle
Mr. Brown gave his gardener a check in full payment for some extra work. The check was in three figures and actually was more than the gardener was owed, so he was very pleased.

"Just a minute," said Mr. Brown. "If you will not cash the check, I will give you the difference between the product of the three figures showing the dollars, and their sum. I can tell you that this is not a small number.

The gardener agreed to this apparently generous offer, but was very disappointed when he learned the truth of the matter. How many dollars was the check made out for?[/q]

1*2*3=6

Whoops, how'd this slip down so far?? :D Here's another one:

The Three Small Boys

Three small boys were talking together when they were joined by an older man. The newcomer noticed that each of the threee boys had a smudge of dirt on his forehead.

"Boys," he said, "will each of you look at the foreheads of the other two and if you see a smudge of dirt on either or both, raise your hand." All three boys looked and all three raised their hands.

"Now," said the old gentleman, "if one of you is certain that he has dirt on his own forehead and can tell me how and why he knows this, he is to raise his hand and I will give him a quarter."

The three boys looked at each other for a few moments, and one of them suddenly raised his hand. Can you figure out how he knew that he had a smudge on his forehead?

I'm putting what I got in black

None raised their hand for a while, that implies all three saw a mark on each other boy. (because they each thought they may or may not have a mark, because at least two have to have a mark. If only one other person had a mark they would know they have a mark) Therefore the boy deduced that and raised their hand.

of course this depends on the other boys thinking this way and being relatively intelligent...

Suppose boy A didn't have a smudge.  He sees the two other boys B and C have a smudge.  Now suppose you take B's POV.  B sees C with a smudge and A without, and C is raising his hand.  This means that C sees a smudge, but since A doesn't have a smudge, this would have to mean that B has a smudge.  B would instantly realize this and give the answer immediately, since it's pretty obvious.  The same goes for C.

Since neither B or C gave the answer right away, this must mean that A in fact actually does have a smudge. QED (or not...:D)

Yeah - hypothetically, *if* A didn't have a smudge, then either B or C (or both) would give the answer immediately.  Since A sees that both B and see have smudges, and neither answered immediately, then that means A *does* have a smudge.

Admittedly, the wording of the solution is confusing.  It's easier to visualize.  Try drawing three circles on a piece of paper, then pretend that one of the circles is imagining what one of the other circles is seeing.

*sits patiently for many hours waiting for next one*

*becomes tired of waiting*

I can't remember the original story, but the principle remains intact. Probably made the rounds already so I'm expecting quick answers.

Once upon a time there was a prince, who fell in love with a beautiful princess. The princesses father, the king (glad I figured that one out...), was not yet convinced that this man was the one for his daughter, especially since there were other worthy suitors waiting in the wings. The king wanted a son that was smart and thoughtful, and so arranged a test for these wannabe son-in-laws. He set up a large room, the kind that's about 15 metres x 15 metres x 5 metres (he is a king after all), bare except for 4 chairs, one in each corner. The 4 hopefulls were made to stand on a chair - one each - and the princess was brought into the centre of the room. The king then stated the rules - the first man to touch his daughter would have her hand in marriage. However, they were not allowed to touch the floor to get to her, and they only had 30 minutes to figure out the situation. How does this prince get to the princess and win her hand?

Well, it would basically work like this. He pushes one chair away while sitting on the other chair, then jumps on to the one he pushed away, drags the first one to the new spot and pushes it in the other direction (so that he can move forward again), then jumps on to the first chair again, and continues this process until he is at the desired location.

:wtf: /me thinks that's a lame answer but oh well

Here's a puzzle (a very nasty puzzle :D):

At its grand opening, eight film enthusiasts eagerly entered their town's Octoplex movie theater, where cinemas numbered 1 through 8 were each about to show one of the following feature films: One flew over the cuckoo's chest, two for the toad, three slays of the condor, four norsemen of the apocalypse, five cheesy pices, six of a grinf, seven days in clay, and eigth men pout. In the lobby, the filmgoing friends--Arnie, Buffy, Carrie, Davey, Ellie, Frankie, Georgie and Harry--each purchased a different snack from among hte eigth items offered at the Octoplex: Ickipoos, Jujubeasts, Kooldrools, Lickericks, Mouthburners, Nasties, Oopsies, and Phooies. Then they split up and each friend went to see a different film.

From the c lues given blow, can you determine who saw which film, the number the othe cinema and who ate which snack?

clues

1. No cinema's number matched the number in the title of the film that was showing there.

2. If each cinema's number were added to the number in the title of its film, the sum would be different for each of the eigtht cinemas.

3. When the friends added the numbers of their cinemas to the numbers in their repective movie titles they found that Buffy and Frankie--one of whose totals was three more than the other's--had higher sums than anyone else.

4. No one had a combination of cinema number and movie title number that totaled exactly 11.

5. The friends who ate Kooldrools, Likcericks and Mouthburners were each in a cinema whose number was two less than the number in the title of the film shown there.

6. Georgie and the person who ate Ickipoos both saw films in which the number in the title was three less than its cinema's number.

7. Arnie's cinema's number, which was twice Ellie's was equal to the number in the title of the Jujubeasts eater's movie.

8. The number in the title of the movie that was seen by the Nasties eater was equal to Carrie's cinema's number, which was exactly half Davey's cinema's number.

9. The Oopsies eater's movie title number was equal to Harry's cinema's number, which was three higher than Frankie's cinema's number.

10. The Mouthburners eater's cinema's number was greater than the number in the title of hte movie seen by the Lickericks eater.

There's a chart to fill out that corresponds to this (for easier organization of matching) that I'll put up here later. :)
