What the hell is Darkness Rising, I have heard that it is a stripped-down FS1, but I need confirmation anyone help?

Never heard of it. Where'd you hear about it?

It is the first half of the Freespace 1 game. Also, it is a campaign for fs1. Don' get them confused.

The first Darklness rising was a demo for FS1 - effectively had the main campaign up to and including the capture of the Taranis.  Incidentally, also the reason I bought FS2.

I know that there are at least two: the OEM version of FS1 and the user-made campaign for FS1. Any others?

All I know is that it came in an old dell game pack (so it's an OEM copy, I got it ... prolly in 98 or 99) with my computer. It had up to that taranis capture mission.

It's a teaser and marketing strategy. :) They give you half the game, enough to get you interested, and then tell you that to finish the game you have to buy the full version. Interplay did the same thing with Descent 1 I think. And probably the other Descent games. If you have FS1 and want more info on the user made campaign, you can get it here:

Someone bid on it in Ebay, I saw it like a week ago for $70.00! I figured it was a scam cause I never heard anyone mention it here before... Glad I didn't bid on it!

BTW: now I won an auction for FS1 + silent threat NEW in box it should be here in a few days. Now I go to Kmart , last visit there 4 months ago, now they got like 6 of them for sale all in beat up boxes but still new... figures...!  for $9.99 but I paid $14.00, oh well.

I got Darkness Rising with a gaming magazine. Funny think is that thay claimed it to be a full version of FS1. :D

Of course I already had FS1 (+expansion) and FS2.

Was it by any chance the German Magzine, PC Action from Feb 2000? That's where I heard of it.

I saw a $9.99 FS1+ST combo set at Sam Goody (of all places) when I went there last week to get Robotech: Battlecry. FS1 is also still sold on the Interplay store I think. :) As for FS2, my latest info on where to get that is in the Missions thread in the General Freespace forum.

To make matters even more confusing I had that campaign also released on a PC Gamer CD, I'll need to look up which issue however.

IMHO, it's an awful campaign that I'm ashamed to admit to have created, however for it's time it wasn't too shabby considering it was my first real campaign and was quite intense albeit a predictable plotline and plenty of buggy missions.
