Title: Topic posting "netiquette"
Post by: CP5670 on October 25, 2002, 04:27:15 pm
I had an interesting question and would like to know all of your views on this. Is it better posting practice to post new topics on subjects that have been discussed before or to bump old topics on that subject? I know that both are sort of frowned upon around here (posting the same topic yet another time and bumping a topic several months old) and on most other bulletin boards, but which of these two is relatively preferable?

Here, we'd have about twelve topics with fifty pages apiece if we didn't do it the other way.

The only topic-posting etiquette in circulation is that you shouldn't include the work "****" more times than any other in the title, at least when there are under-13s about.

In the first option, everyone's going to complain "this topic is old, do a search" and it's going to disappear. In the second, an admin is going to say "bumping old topics is bad" and lock it. I suggest finding an old thread, reading it completely, and if you have something new and significant to say then it's worth making a new thread.

In general, a new topic, because the old one has likely gone off-topic.
Unless the old topic is only on the 2nd page or so.

bah, there is already one of those on the front page... :p

Anyway, I personally am not quite sure on this issue, and this also seems to be the case for the community as a whole as the poll results so far reflect. We do not want everything on a particular subject crammed into one topic since that would just get really messy to read, but on the other hand, we do not ten topics containing the same material but each created a few months apart. (I think this is why everyone on the VBB got mad when a FS3 topic came up)

creating new topic. Mainly because if you read old topics you don't realise are old, then you start thinking that Steak is back.

Too true... has fooled me.

I'd say don't do anything, except if you have something very important to say to the topic. Then do whatever you want...

But it's not OK to bump an old topic because of "lol! funny joke!"...

What I've found to be the best compromise is to create a new thread about the topic, and reference the old one(s) from it i.e. link to it. That way, you don't spread the impression of being a troll for bumping old topics, and you show that you've already read through the discussions already had, and not just starting a new one through ignorance.

I think it depends on how old the thread is. 2 months or older is about reasonable for some threads to be not bumped, where some are never too old to be bumped, and some are too old to be bumped the day before they were posted.

and, uh, Kazashi has a good point.

If they're bumping up a thread, but actually contributing to the discussion, then I won't get all that mad.  However, bumping a thread for the sake of bumping it up is trolling.
