To all those who make minor mods (ship models, skins etc), not the major projects. Could you please submit your work to the HLP mods archive, or VWatch. i am tired of searching all over the net, and so I believe are many others.
-
Neither of those has been updated in ages, though. Besides which, it's pretty hard for people like me (i.e. 56k-ers) to upload large files AND send them off to HLP, et al. That was one of the cool things about FSSector - Hunter always went and took the stuff straight of the original site without me having to resend it to him.
-
Yeah I was thinking about this recently. I was thinking of doing a large site with links to each ship (whatever site it is hosted on) with some shots and info on the ship. You would see what you are downloading and what it is recomended for (anti fighter cruiser etc)
However this would be a large task and with poor html skills I never got round to it, bit busy at the moment :D
-
VolitionWatch should be updated... i think everyone's really busy there at the moment...
but soon :)
-
F2S had the best mini-mod repository. I can't wait for it to get back up.
-
F2S isn't coming back up. There is a LITTLE hope. Hunter said that he MIGHT be on to something. But face it, VBB, F2SBB, our community is dieing. Let's just keep HLP alive. Because I hate to say it, but VWBB is starting to get inactive.

HLP ain't lookin' too good, either. Nobody's really released anything except campaign demos in at least a year- and no campaigns are exactly what you'd call coming soon. The open-source thing helped a bit, but more and more HLP's just becoming a convienient host for all the various campaigns, where nobody actually talks to much of anyone else except via crap posts in here. The modding forum's gone down quite a lot, lately.
BTW- I think we really do need to set up some kinda site for all the indie mods, since the HLP one won't be coming any time soon, either. Something cheap and collectively owned. What's the size limit on Geocities pages?
-
One of the hosted sites could probably do something like this, actually. I personally think HLP should hire an extra web guy or two who has some free time to build up the mod section.

Mine is, if you call the end of the year "coming soon." :D The mod and source forums seem okay to me, although I have noticed a distinct lack of activity in the GFS one in the last month or so.

- Captain Stu to Gunnery control, engage p1mp mode!
- Roger sir! T -5. 4. 3. 2. 1. OPEN FIRE!
Whaddya mean nobody's really released anything? LM has already had two releases (if you still don't have them, then http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/lmarshal is where you want to go), and the third, 13-mission, voiced, command briefed, cutscened release is due to arrive at christmas, or at latest the New Year. So, until you get your greasy hands on Where Eagles Dare, go play Pilot and The Unexpected, and enjoy the new missions, music, and CB anis. GO GO GO!
Oh, and about the modding forum, it depends. It has gone down lately, but it's coming up again. Today morning I found myself browsing through an entire page of new stuff. So stick it.
Did I mention you should download Lightning Marshal already?

No offence, but i already tried LM, and it seemed very incomplete. There were alot of things wrong with the mods, and the missions really needed some work.
HLP isn't doing too bad, it seems some of the old projects are just "dying off", such as Machina Terra, OTT, Technological Superiority, Third Twilight, Fifth Sun, and we havn't heard from TAP in a while. New projects come in, but they dont show the originality they need to be. How many "no shivan" projects have come in recently? they look basically all the same.
-
Ah-yup. The other thing is, the cooler a project's gonna be, generally the lower probablilty it will survive to completion. The TCs tend to take much longer, particularly the well-made ones, and after a certain point everyone just gets sick of working on 'em.

a/ Casualties of War will be in beta testing soon as Shadowwolf can get back online
b/ The main reason that modding's died down is that a load of people are working on their own projects now, rather than standalones
c/ There are far too many campaigns - all the good people are getting spread thinly.

To be honest, I'm not even going to try and play, well, probably any of the campaings being developed. After Reciprocity is done, I may well abandon FreeSpace alltogether, at least until I start to really miss it and decide to take me Erinyes out for a spin again.
Thing is, and I don't know how to say this without causing offence, but most campaigns are not up to the standard I expect. I'm mainly talking about voices here - a campaign without voices just seems half-arsed. Breaks in the action to allow for messages? Whatever...
I played Derelict about six months ago. The first time I played it, I was appropriately wowed. It seemed incredible that the community had produced such a thing. Not so the second time, now that I was clued with FRED and such. No offence to the guys as made it, but it was so riddled with bugs and difficulty spikes that I left it half way through. Still, it was far more professional than Silent Threat :)
I know I sound like a twat on me high horse here, but the stuff I'm doing aims to satisfy everything I want in a campaign - voices, continuity, good scripts, UBER rigorous beta testing, and and a sense of atmosphere and tension. So far I'm pleased with what I've produced, and though it's short I hope my ickle campaign thingy will be near :v: quality when it's done.
OK, rant over. Flame me *braces*

The Star Wars Mod is going smoothly (from my point of view, at least) and all it's really doing right now is making models. There's no real campaign plotted out yet. With the wealth of material, both canon and from the EU, I think it's going to be here for a while.
If only we get hosted.

Incidentally, the Reciprocity downloads page is now fully linked up. :)

You can always do classic space battle from the movie, or any one of the books (X-WING campaign sounds yummy)
if you need help with ideas, i could help ya out most deffinitly.

Aldo: It's C I don't like in particular. Half of the people here seem to be working on half a dozen campaigns apiece as it is. Maybe the community should get together and cut off the dead-weight projects, eh?:D
-
I've always said it... their models and weapons can go into that repository Analazon is working on. And we need to see people working on fewer projects. I've more or less finished the Port, so now I'm doing Star Wars. That's it.
Stealth here, on the other hand... *glares at Stealth whilst mouthing the words 'Silent Threat'*

Believe it or not, the 158th has a large scale demo coming; more to the point, its a crucial link to the final act. We're looking at 12 missions, 10 ships, and a number of smaller goodies; and while the release date has been pushed back, it will be coming around the corner...Christmas at the latest.
The delay, should any of you be wondering, was due to the loss of a modeler who happened to be the only modeler working on Exposition; with him went all his work. We've had to redo everything from scratch since and reshuffle staffers...but like I said, its only a temporary setback. ;)

I think I'll release the first version (scrapped) of Maelstrom as a completely new campaign. All the files are there (I think) and its so different from the new version it can stand alone. It'll only be the first chapter or so.

Unfortunately, I mostly agree with you here. Although I don't care too much about voices, most campaigns I have played so far do indeed fall quite short of my expectations, mainly in terms of gameplay balance and to a lesser extent, storyline plausiblity and spelling/grammar. That will not stop me from playing the new ones coming out anyway, but I will admit to being somewhat dissappointed in most of the cases I have seen so far. I expect at the very least Volition-quality missions when playing a campaign, preferably with a bit more polish.
UBER rigorous beta testing
This is precisely why PI only has 15 missions but is taking so long to complete. :D
-
Derelict wasn't bad. It had some novel ideas for gameplay, and a plot better than some. The only thing that bothered me about it was that the missions were either insanely slow and dull or next to impossible. Or both at the same time- the whole "kill 500 Lokis trying to blow up one half-dead freighter" thing got REALLY tiresome. But you know what I liked best about it? It actually got DONE. And it didn't SUCK. Two things which immediately put it in the elite of campaigns.
I think it's high time for some honesty here. Most of us have some skill or another. Few of us know a little of everything. We don't have incompetent modelers heading TCs. Why do we have people who can't write half-decent sci-fi coming up with our plots?
Once again, I think it's time to face facts and just get rid of the really sucky ones. Yeah, sure, everyone wants their name in the head credits of a campaign, but it ain't gonna be much good if people don't at least apprentice at another campaign first. It's like writing your first short story, having never written before, and wanting it to be a bestseller. Or expecting, having never directed or touched a movie camera, to make a blockbuster film. Dream on.

actually Third Twilight's actually coming along better than (most) other campaigns! It just got an internal forum, and progress seems to have jumped from a near standstill to a very fast pace since the release of the "soundtrack".
-
Well seeing as how you're all on about the projects now, I feel it appropriate to mention that, as noe of the few tappers still posting, we are getting nowhere! All our staff is disappearing, USS Alex, Thorn, all away somewhere.

I'm still figuring out how to texture and almost got the hang of it, so I might be of use soon. Only thing on POF data i can't do now is docking paths. Some of the new tutorials have helped alot.
