Right, I got an AVI off of Kazaa, but now it won't let me delete it, giving the 'another program is using the file' error. The annoying part of it is that when I try and do anything with the file, delete it or cut it or whatever, suddenly explorer.exe starts to eat up around 98% of CPU, slowing my pc to a crawl
Not even restarting the computer in safe mode helps, though that did allow me to delete a copy which was giving me the same problem. I'm so obsessively neat as far as my pc is concerned that this is irritating me something chronic - ideas?

Usually i have to close down everything (every program save explorer and other essentials) and thjen delete it.. some programs are gay and don't let you delete them which is uh.. yeah.. i usually just leave those alone somewhere ignorantly.
I'm pretty sure there are DOS commands for it though.
-
Restart in DOS mode...
using the following commands (i don't know how familiar you are with DOS) navigate your way to the folder with the AVI on it, and then delete it.
del *filename* = Deletes the file
cd\ = goes back to main directory
cd *directory* = goes into a directory
dir = names all files in a directory
dir/p = names all files in the directory, but only a page at a time
if you need any help let me know... these should be all the commands you need to locate and delete the AVI.

Forgot to mention I was using XP Home - no DOS! Yay!
(unless it'll work from the command prompt?)
-
Had a file from Kazaa like that a couple times...but it's always let me delete it once I shut down Kazaa.
-
well that sucks
yeah, try rebooting, and then running a command prompt... i know SQUAT about WindowsXP... i didn't know it was missing the 'restart in dos' option :p
also some commands you may want to remember:
exit = exits the DOS window
windows = loads windows

It worked! w00+! Help yourself to whatever flavour cookie you want, Stealth :)

I have the same problem. Something must be using the file (if only for the sake of it). I think I'll run Adaware, delete the spyware and then try deleting after a reset.

Usually those kind of files are the result of long file names... which are usually related to pr0nographic material... shame on you.
Btw, if your having trouble deleting a file, try the exterior shell command prompt, if you cant type in the file name, then move everything but that file from the directory, then use del *.* in that dir, or deltree dirname. For anyone using NTFS based OS, you have to use safe mode with command prompt.

Actually, it was an episode of a cartoon called 'The Mysterious Cities of Gold', circa 1990. I thought that perhaps the dodgy file was punishment for donloading that instead of pr0n...

I had to clear a load of processes of the list then use dos.
