Title: Hallowe'en
Post by: Shrike on October 29, 2002, 06:08:20 pm
The day of costumes and candy is coming up, so what are you all doing for this great day?  I know much of the world, backwards as it is, doesn't celebrate All Hallow's Eve.  So if you're in that remote corner of the world, a resounding ha ha! to you.

Anyhow, since I'm sure people will want to know, I'm going clubbing tomorrow night at a special Hallowe'en edition of Sanctuary (industrial/alternative/synthpop goth night), and off to the Rocky Horror Picture Show and ideally a party afterwards on Hallowe'en itself, and of course the usual sunday at Sanctuary during weekend.  Fun fun. :D

Shrikes going to laugh at me.  I'm going to be doing tons of coursework and manning the door while reading a novel for a class so I can evaluate the communications theories at work within.

YAY!

I am going to be a seductive mad scientist (think Poison Ivy from Batman & Robin movie)....I don't know how seductive I'll be with my real glasses on though :p

I might go to a real voodoo ritual instead...I've only been to one but it was during the day...the nighttime ones are not for the faint of heart from what I've read

We feel that, frankly, we're now at an age when we shouldn't have to go trick or treating. So we're going to rob small children of their goodies instead :)

The same thing we do every night, Pinky--TRY TO TAKE OVER THE WORL--er... wrong script.

I'll be giving out candy, working on compsci homework and trying to hurt my TA's and professors minds with a crazy recursive tree structure that I built for modelling orbital dynamics in OpenGL. :D

Mostly though, just giving out candy. :)

The usual. Getting out the hose and climbing onto the roof. Halloween is the one time of year I can exercise my sadistic tendencies and still be more or less within the acceptable bounds of society. Which would be the last place I'd wanna be, except that jail sucks worse than here.

Oh, wait. Actually, this year, I'm going to a birthday party for one of the few people who are more or less "friends" I know. Freaky. I'll have to pay one of my ***** sisters to do the whole hose spiel, lest those arrogant little kids forget their place and start lookign for handouts.

You're going to a goth night, right?

I'd rather shove railroad spikes through my ears and remove my eyes with serrated grapefruit spoons.  I can't think of anything, except a funeral, that would be more boring.

Its a matter of, you know, perspective. ;)

BORING?  Unless you don't like going clubbing, ie loud music and dancing, then maybe, but it's not boring, especially when you're out with friends.  There's a costume contest too, always fun.

I find being in clubs, with loud music, people I don't know (usually drunk) and strange clothing to be "boring".

I haven't been in a club since I left Japan, Shrike, and I haven't be drunk since my first year in Japan. That's like... um... nearly 5yrs now. I like being the quiet, bookish, stay at home sort.. I like a good book more than a good dance track. See? its perspective. Your thing would bore me unto ennui, and my thing bores you to even contemplate. Perspective. Its a good thing.

That's where you're wrong.  I am an avid reader, sometimes to the detriment of my sleep schedule. (oops)  If I wasn't interested in 'stay at home stuff' I wouldn't be running this place, now would I? ;)

Not that I like doing just one or the other, I like doing as much as I can.

Now, if I could find those damn field notes I could start on my report.....

Actually, I thought that was a basic streak of insanity common to all people who run things for groups of loosely connected people. ;)

so what ARE you wearing for the costume contest? Say you're going as Bosch as KT suggested.

No, nothing complicated, that involves time, money and inspiration, things which I have been in short supply of lately. I personally have never been much of a dress-up kind of guy, so I'm just going as a normal weekend goth. ;)

Well, slightly dressed up, I'll be wearing my vinyl pants most likely, which I don't normally do.

And I still can't find my God-damn field notes!

Unfortunately, I will be subjected to a 3 hour Greek class which cannot be skipped, since it includes a vocabulary test. But apparently there will be food and assorted yummies, so not a total loss.

This week is our fall holidays. So no school for this week. Suckas.

Today, I will go see my new apartment out of town with a female friend of mine.

Then for a change I will try to complete the deathmatch part of UT in godlike.

Then I will go see the journalists only premiere of the most expensive movie of Estonia, "Names on the marbleslab"

Then  I will go out with friends, get drunk and celebrate BC Kalev's victory over BC Kiev yesterday.

Hmm... nothing Halloween related here. :(

Let's see tomorrow's schedule:
0900-1200 - Go swimming
1200-2400 - Tare down the wallpaper at my new apartement.

Gee, what halloween mood. :doubt:

I have never been a club so  wouldn't know, but I generally hate going out of the house at all; my computer games, special functions and legos are more than enough to keep me busy all the time. :D

oh, god!

anyways, I'm gonna stay at home, I think. I live one stair up, and they are outside, so if some kids come and disturb me I'll give them the fast ride down. I hate this go-around-and-beg-stuff thing.

and I live in a too small town for it to be any clubs within 15 kilometers.

Interesting.....well I work in the morning and our boss is making everyone dress up, she's gonna be a cowgirl and um....;7

Anywho I'm gonna be a police officer and probably gonna be sent home after one too many....

"excuse me sir, did you pay for that?" *handcuffs* "come with me sir." *talks into radio* "Adam 2-12 I got a 918 here, yup, stupid enough to be handcuffed by a fake cop"

Title: Hallowe'en
Post by: Borealis on October 31, 2002, 04:19:17 pm
Samhain is the druidic festival that was the precursor to Halloween.  St. Patrick, a Romanized Celt, renamed it to All Hallow's Eve and told the stuffy Roman Catholic bishops it was a pre-celebration of the Catholic saints (hence All Saints Day the following morning) so they wouldn't abolish the holiday for being 'pagan.'  He knew abolishing the holiday would have caused some fiery Celtic riots.  He was known for his efforts such as these to ease the differences between Celts and their Roman conquerors.

...and change of plans for me...no costume, no voodoo ritual, I will be spending the only holiday I love nursing this stupid ****ing flu...joy

Borealis almost had a cookie :D

Samhain was the new year celebration of th Celtic cultures, a day that didn't belong to a year... the year ended at the 30th, and restarted at the 1st November... the 31st day of October was a "yearless" day, wich was believed to be a day where the living and dead worlds were closer from each other, thus making it easier to contact the ancestors...

BTW, I'm no Irish, but portuguese... and yes I'm pagan :)
