Title: Models for free
Post by: gevatter Lars on October 30, 2002, 06:45:24 am
I have got about 20 model on my HD, but since my PC crashed I can't work anymore on them. I have managed it to transfere them to a different PC, but its just a old PC and not fast enough to work with.
So I want to give away my model nearly for free, just some credits and send me the model-files when you have finished working on them.
I have got pictures and a small text for every ship I have made. The discription is not binding, just what I thought when I made them.
The models are untextured and without turrets or lods...sorry.
I would upload the zip if I could, but I haven't got any webspace. So if someone of the HLP or anyone else could do that for me it would be nice. (Only 2,6MB)

To contact me send me an Email or a PM at HLP, I haven't got ICQ on this PC, because its not my own.

Some examples for you...
http://gevatter_lars.tripod.com/sa_ships/
http://gevatter_lars.tripod.com/templar/
http://gevatter_lars.tripod.com/

Still that aren't all the models and there are also some that don't have anymore...pc crash you know...
so it would be good if someone could upload that small self extracting file for me.
I will also make a file with all the models, but it would be easier if I send you only the ships you want.

Can't host the zip/exe file, but I could host at least pics on my AOL http/ftp space and post a message in this thread with a link to them. That Tripod site is unavailable right now due to their annoying bandwidth limits, so I can't even see them. (This thread is too popular. ;) )

I could host the downloads in a sub area of the ITHOV site.

Thanks for the interest, I will make a model pack ready as soon as I can.

For the people who want to host the pics, I haven't got any FTP prog, so I can't upload them to an FTP.
I need an Email where I can send the pics and descriptions to.
Every ship has 3-4 pics and a discription, so it is a lot of stuff if you post every pic (800*600).

What format are they in? As they're untextured I presume that they're still in .cob format?

If they're in .lwo format I can also read it, but anything else and I can't. :)

They are in 3ds. Truespace can load that files and if I remember correct also lightwave.
Or just try to get that shareware prog called 3d Exploration.
Its a 3d model viewer which can read many formats and also converts them.
I don't have the w³ adress, so you have to find it yourself...

Beside that I have got the model pack ready for transfere, just ~300kb...its without pics and any text, just the models.

Try Smart FTP (http://www.smartftp.com/) I find it pretty easy to use and it's free (well donationware but that's the same if you have no morals :D )

Hey Vadar I have tried your FTP but I can't get a connection.

Ok, a 300 kb file I can host if you don't get it hosted somewhere else first. Just send it to [email protected] and I'll upload it to my http/ftp space. (You couldn't upload it anyways, considering how it does user authentication.) And SmartFTP is nice, I use it too. :)

Can trueSpace read 3ds files? I've got TS5.1.......

It ought to be able to. How well it opens them I couldn't say.

OK I have send EdrickV the modelfiles and the pics. Well lets see what he can do...
TS5.x can load 3ds files, but iirc not over the load, but the import option.
I have loaded 3ds files with TS so there must be a way.

I could try to convert them, but I can say if that is possible at the moment, cause my PC is in a realy bad shape...crashing every 5 min...but I don't have the progs I need on this PC...so try it youself...and find out the wonders of the world young warrior...

Ok, got the pics but they will take longer to put up. (I'll have to split them up across multiple SN's cause I only get 2 megs per SN.) As it's dinner time and Halloween, it may be a couple hours before they're up. (I'll be passing out the candy.) But till then, the models themselves are up and you can get a better idea what they look like through them.

I'm officially stealing these models for The Swarm War.

Full credit for Gevettar_Lars.

Well, okay. :)

And OUCH ON SUBMODELS!!!

However, I have already found two models that are Swarmish, and a small fleet of classes for the Yun Federation, as well as the TSD Apocalypse!

The link above is the direct link to the files. (The forum code just shortened the visible URL. If you right click you should be able to copy the URL to the clipboard if that's what you want to do.)

Ok, the pics and texts are up, but the pics are zipped because there are so many of them, which add up to more space then I have on one name, that I can't just upload them seperately. The texts are included with the pics and are also available seperately so you can read about the various ships.
The texts:
http://members.aol.com/Lowark/FS2/Texts
The two pic zip's:
http://members.aol.com/kelinwhitewing/Pics1.zip
http://members.aol.com/huntercomputers/FS2/Pics2.zip

I probably won't keep the pics up forever, but I will keep them up for a while. (I hadn't expected them to be so big or so many.)

Currently re-texturing them, and combining stuff into one submodel........yeesh! :D

Currently, I've got a Yun Battleship (still turreting) and a Yun Destroyer. I've never really had a design for the Yun ships, but things like the Yorktown fit for some reason........though names will be changed.

I'm always interested in your models - if only the main hull was one subobject.......

However, may I please present the Yun Federation 'Callisto' class Frigate in action with The Swarm in the Rylissa system:

Looks interesting, you have changed a lot form my original idea, but thats ok since I said they are free.

Well, they're there TO be changed! :D

Most of the cap-ships are fitting out the Yun Federation. However, one of them (I'll find out which one later) doesn't like being combined into one object.....

Post by: EdrickV on November 03, 2002, 08:06:17 pm
Some of those ships also have parts (that usually aren't a seperate subobject) with inverted faces.

Or holes. It's not funny!

Makes my life absolute hell!

Well, I'll post up a pic of the Serenity class Battleship when I've finished her. She's not one of GL's models, she's one of mine. But I want to give you an idea of the Karran warships as they're all my own design and I'm quite proud of them.

I have got no problems...well nearly no problems with them. What prog do you use?
Title: Models for free
Post by: Killfrenzy on November 04, 2002, 04:41:37 pm
Uh......

Modelling: trueSpace 5.1

Conversion: PCS and Cob2FS2

See my new thread on the Serenity! :D

An example of the inverted faces (aka flipped normals) is the Hamburg. The left middle section has it's faces pointing inward rather then outward the way the rest of the ship's faces do.

That wouldn't happen in my models because they are "grown" from one primative. I don't make multiple sections and group them together like I've seen other people do. (Well, except for things like turrets and other things that are supposed to be seperate subobjects in FS2.)
Title: Models for free
Post by: Killfrenzy on November 04, 2002, 04:53:01 pm
I 'grow' most of my models. But for the Serenity I had to do the hangars seperately then combine the objects.

Ups sorry for that, but haven't got the possibility to correct this, because my PC dosn't work and so I have got no 3d prog. I have just rescued them...but it shouldn't be any problem to change the facing...at last I wouldn't have (using Rhino, at last I would if I could).

Well, once the Serenity is how I want it, I'll have a play.

Wouldn't be hard to fix for me either. (I'd have to ungroup all the combined subobjects and invert the ones with bad normals.) I'm not really working on those models (at least right now) though. I just noted it for those who are. :) I've got enough (almost 100) unfinished models of my own as is. Not that that will stop me from making more, especially since some I've about given up on or have just abandonded because they don't look good enough to salvage. ;)

It's not so much a matter of not wanting any of them, though I'd have to look again to see if there are any designs I would want to develop, but the fact that Wings3D doesn't often work well with models made in other programs and the fact that I haven't made any ships that I consider fully finished yet. (The Brontos being my first experiment in making a ship from mesh building all the way down to POF and table data. And I haven't gotten around to re-texturing it yet. For the big version that "cockpit" needs to go, and I need to fix some other things which will result in modifying the model's geometry, but make texturing easier.)
