Well? Were you confused for a bit? ;7
Make sure you read both announcements, btw!
-
This does indeed sound like a much better systemt than the old one, at least as far as organization purposes go. :) (if it works correctly, that is :D)
-
i only see the SUPPORT forum personally :(
however i'm subscribed to an internal forum, and so through the profile if i click on it it takes me to it
-
Oh, and make sure you read BOTH announcements, ok? ;)
-
ahhh I see... in that case... looks good :)
-
No private forum for my project (not really needed), so I don't need anyone to have access.
-
Depends - if there's a post in the internal forum, will the HLP logo go red on the main forum index? It's convenient for me to scroll down to NTV, and then NTV internal (and now SW as well :)), looking for a red logo - if I have one, I need to check them, if not, I can save myself the time. I'ts a minor thing I'll admit, but it was convenient.
-
should I PM you with my 'staff'? because while we have a hosted HLP page and avatar, we don't have a forum...
-
The old forum permissions are still active, that's why you can see the forum. We're just relocating the forums for now, the permissions will be reset soon afterwards.
And yes, ALL projects, even those without internal or public forums, need to reply to the census.
:)
-
ok... how much more "secure" is this than the old system?
not a problem, i just like the old system better, where you can scroll down to the 'private forum's category :(
but it's whatever you guys think is best
EDIT:

i just discovered what you can do... (to solve this problem)
you can "subscribe to a forum", and whenever there's a new message it displays it at the bottom of the FORUMS list, or in your profile
-
*goes to look at the internal(s)*
-
Meh. I've been doing that for ages.
*sues for intellectual property infringments*

Orders of magnitude more secure. We ran a long series of tests due to several reports of strange activity from several members, and found a major problem with the vB permissions system. After trying several alternatives, we came to the conclusion that this is the best way.
And the "new post" indicator will still appear, but on the main page you'll see it only on the public forum under which the private forum is located for those you have access.
:)
-
With regard to what Stealth said, I think you'll agree that security comes before accessability with internal forums. I agree that not being able to see the active stuff in each forum at a glance is a little annoying but from the point of view of the hosted sites - not half as bad as having security problems.

i figured out how to counter that problem though... by subscribing to all the PRIVATE forums i have access too, i can simply go to the bottom of the FORUMS page (below where there support forum is) and it says how many forums i'm subscribed to, and i can tell if there's any new messages in it or not  very nice, i can get used to this system very easily!
Just curious, what and how did you find was the problem with the vB permissions system?

Uh.....they didn't work. And they found this through the masses of "I can see! I can see!" threads in the support forum.

actually i thought they were talking about people being able to access forums they weren't supposed to
-
I'd rather have the forums secure than accessable.

We had a series of permission errors where users were able to access forums they shouldn't have permission to access, verified through posts and access logs. From that, we were able to identify a problem on permission inheritance, which was fixed throught the actions we're taking now.

well i hope it really is fixed  ;)
-
The new system's pretty good. Hail the admins.
-
OK, now PM Styxx the info he requires!

We do too! :D

I personally dislike the new organization. I have to click through more forums to get to internal for one, and I cannot tell by the HL logo, if the new posts are made in private or public forums.
But if it's safer that way, then sure, go ahead. That way no one will see that explosion-filled cutscene waiting in the... :nervous: You did not here that. Infact, you aren't even here. Shoo! Shoo!
*puts on black glasses*
*activates the deneuraliser*
-
one more thing. What if I get new staff members during that 2 week period?
-
*sings "black suits comin'"*
Don't mind him. He's in love with LM release 3
-
To all of you who want a short and easy way to see if there have been new posts in the various internals, you can click on the "Hosted (http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~freespace/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=3)" category and see everything you have access to.

that, plus I'm in a pimpin' mood.
-
Not bad. The announcements kinda confused me. I didn't know that the board could embed forums within forums. I thought the rearrangement was merely logical, rather than logical and visual.
I'm still not sure I like it though. I guess I'll have to get used to it.
-
There was a reorganisation?
Why do you never tell me?

Meh - do you have access to any private forums? If not, then you won't notice any change. :D
-
Did something change? So long as the URLs to the private forums didn't change, I don't give a flying hamster ****, and won't have to embark on a bloody rampage.

I don't think they have, but you should be able to access the forum properly now.
BTW, why don't you have any avatars for Recip?

oh, I must have mixed it up with those hosted forums.

That's a very good question. I don't know.
But then again, I end up doing a little something for a lot of campaigns (and will even more so soon, if I can't get a render job somewhere)- I think it's just that I never do quite enough to qualify. But I dunno- what with the weapon anims, I suppose I AM doing a lot for Rec now...
Never mind. I think the first two sentences kinda covered it.

Just wondering, since it's the only internal forum you have access to.
-
I have one small nitpick so far.
In some of the forums.. where it has the last post. I click on it, only to find out i don't have access to it because its in the private forum.
I think this kinda sucks.
there. now i feel like i fit in. :p
-
Hate it. Far less convenient to see if someone's posted in one of the internal forums I have access to, now i have to go dig around to get to the right forums, with or without the new post icon...just annoyingly tedious.
As for security, I've said this before and I'll say it again: if someone is so desperate as to know whats going on with the 158th that they'll look for ways to sneak in, by all means, go ahead and snoop. Theres no classified matieral, no files to steal, no pr0n to look at, and nothing I'm hiding simply for the sake of hiding it. Internal forums are more for formality and professionalism than security; showing everything you have before they're complete isnt very professional, especially if some of that stuff isnt staying for the full ride.

Does the SCP get one?

One what?

Does the SCP need one? Having an internal forum for the SCP pretty much defeats the idea of an "open" project, no?
-
I must admit I was confused. Over the last 5 days I had a lot of trouble with HLP. First I thought that I was banned, then I couldn't post anything for like 24 hours and then I saw that there were no private forums available? WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO ME?? *Screams*

that's a good point... it's the same with the FS PORT. GE says (and he's right) that we don't need one, because the point of the project is not to hide anything. things are released as soon as they're done.

It would be useful for seperating coding issues from requests.
I find myself constantly subject to people who know nothing about coding giving me coding advise and telling me how easy everything is.

Could you be more specific? I'm not quite sure I follow you here.

It's but a single extra click on the Hosted (http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~freespace/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=3) category. (Pssst! Click the word "Hosted" in the previous sentence)

*proceeds to grant public access to the 158th Internal forum* :drevil:
No, seriously, you may think that way, but not everyone does.

Funny, but I never ran into any forum problems like that. But those problems were not caused by this reorganization - we only started (and finished) this yesterday - figure 24 hours before this very post, going on for about 4-5 hours.

As far as I'm concerned, get IceFire or Inquisitor to give the word and an internal forum is yours.

I'd ask that again.

PM with the information? New occurences of stuff are fine I think - but just not telling anyone the first time round is laziness :)
-
I can't get access anymore...:(
Not that it matters, I'm almost gone from the Freespace community...

Aww. Poor UT.
OK, I found a problem. I see that the T-V War project has new posts. I open it up and I see no new posts. I go back, and click on the 'last post' button. It says I don't have permission to view that page.
This means that the internal forum has new posts, even though I can't see them. Is it possible to fix this so it only lets you see if there are new posts you have permission to read?
-
meh... very strange bug. For some reason the LM and TT forums in the main forums page show now the total of posts in both internal and public forums. Doesn't do that for AP, 158th and KC forums though.

GE: Yeah, I'm aware of that issue. Like I said on ICQ, view the hosted sites from the "Hosted" category, and yu'll be able to see the internals alongside the public ones.
Peanuts, I don't know why that would be that way in one but not the other. But I don't think that's a crucial issue.
-
don't bet on it Sandwich. It also is the same with guests and other users, who do not have access to LM internal. Could be confusing, if they see that the forums has nearly 500 posts, while actually it has only 180.
Oh, could have something to do with the thread I moved yesterday from the LM internal to the LM public.
