Title: GTFr Cyllene
Post by: Nico on August 19, 2001, 07:37:00 am
OK, sorry, this time it's not a terrible death machine, it's a... freighter  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) But eh! try to win a war w/o supplies  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
Stats: not fixed yet.
Nothing special to say. It's the new freighter for my campaign, and is protected by a good hull and 3 turrets. Like all my new GTA vessels, it will be quite fast compared to what you know, but will have less HP than a Tau or vasudan counterpart (tho the 3 turrets will be quite deadly for balance)

note: Is the name already taken?

Cool...it is the first freighter I've seen by FS2-modders! And a good looking, too!

Nice next-gen look  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Just curious - how many maps do you use for frieghters / cruisers?

...  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) thanx  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
But I don't really get it lol, why this one? I made it in one hour, it's actually a low poly model (444 polys only for lod1). Bah, anyway it's cool to hear this kind of things  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
Aldo: the Lod1 uses 10 maps, plus 2 for the lower lods and one more for the debris. there's also 2 additional maps coz the cargos are in the same file to help for scaling when it will be converted (one more ship to wait on my HD...)

The model is nothing special (the engines are cool though), but the maps are great.

Wow! So how many models for FS2 have you made now Venom? An entire fleet? What's next on the agenda?

I have 3 fleets to do for my campaign (GTA, Tau and PVN) plus 2 or 3 shivan ships (w/o counting the ones already done: hydra, chimera, serpent succubus and maybe the scylla -if I use it I'll redo it-)
About all the GTA vessels are done, they're waiting to be converted. All the Destroyers (that's 3) are done, I posted pics of 2 of them (the Duat and the Gaia). I'll post pics the ITD Ryujin  soon. This ship will probably be the first you'll be able to d/l since it'll be used with an alternative name in Inferno. I've done several models in different status right now. All concepts are done for the GTA, the Taus and the shivans. I have trouble designing new vasudan ships tho. Anyway, I make models faster than they're converted, so there's (unfortunately I would say) no rush. For now, only two models (the GTF raziel and the GTC Aegis) are fully converted. I'm still waiting the gaia from IPandrews -for now it's probably the biggest piece of work, that will be the ship with the largest number of turrets in the campaign ( 82 I think ).
End of briefing, pilots, dismissed  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Really nice. I mean, it might not be the biggest fun the universe, but somebody had to make some frieghters.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Is the cargo line on the front a seperate model from the rest of the freighter?

I know there is a method, but all I see is madness.

Easy: it's like in a pic, it adds life, and that's one of the things I'd really like to have in all my missions (but not with freigthers everywhere of course :lol (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Red5... Hem, ... ... YEAH! sure  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
Could you post a pic or two? coz [shameful] I've never seen any of your HUDs or anis [/shameful]  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

thats a nice ship! but to me it looks too sleek. All my freighters (err... about 5 so far) are all big bulky and blocking - inicating industrail. but then again your campaign isn't centred around a mining colony is it...

NICE!  Those maps really make the model (designing a good map is definately harder than designing a good model, at least that's my inept point of view)...   (c:

I agree completely. In a project I'm working on, we've had models for a very long time and they are top jobs, each of them, but a little while ago we got nice texture jobs on them and I can tell you, they became alive.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

That's because I designed all the GTA fleet this way. The other terran faction (the Tau) will have blocky ships, lots of them  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
I may post a pic of the TID Ryujin soon.

Hmm, how long did it take you to do those maps?  I'm wondering because it's something I've been mostly doing in dribs and drabs, a bit here and there.

I would REALLY like to see Venom do a how-to on how he textures his models so well. Venom's models are a perfect example of how a fairly simple wireframe can be a beautiful finished project with the right texturing, and I'd give an arm to be able to do maps like that for my ships.

Venom, with these new additions to your fleet, I think you could come up with a really sweet render of the fleet. Like a shipping lane or something.. I don't know, I'd just like to see some of your work "in action"

yeah, me too  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
There's already a render of some of them in the general forum, people said the lightning was wrong, so I changed it, and "poum!", the thread went dead, no comment. Well, maybe, I dunno for now.
For the maps? you mean drawing the map or applying it?

Maby make a hangar for it for 2 fighters as support

Why? that's a freighter, not a carrier. Freighters always have a wing for cover, doesn't need a hager, plus that would be a waste of valuable space to carry more goods into the ship itself.

That's a good idea, though - a mini-carrier. Enough to carry, say, 4 or 5 fighters, respectable speed (say 40 m/s) and a lighter armament than usual (1 SGreen, 4 AAAf, 4 standard flak?) Give it a good model and you have a nice little hit and run/special ops ship.

I made one - sort of - the Gryphon.   Technically a large 'flak' cruiser, but it had a small fighter bay on the underside.  Paths alwasy were a bit odd, though.
