I got fighter flak working, it doesn't explode in your face anymore. I'll CVS the changes and give you a table to play around with.

how do you determine where it blows up/stops?
Is flak programmed to explode when close to hostile ships, because when cap ships fire, they explode right next you are in your area.

They explode near fighters, or when they crash into something. Someone already made a flak cannon for fighters... without a source code change.

Are you sure it was for fighters?
I remember I made a little mod that put flak and slash beams on bomber's turrets, but never Flak on a fighter's primary points...

I made one ages ago. A laser and the "Particle Spew" and sound to make it look like flak. And i used the flak explosion.

i did but it seemed fake, so i added this.. you had to hit the ship instead of getting near it.

so does it use the distance to target or some sort of range check
