 For goodness sake it's one of the most well known hoaxes on the internet. It's been around for more than three years. It exploits the explosive anger and affection some cat lovers have for their cats to the extreme.

P.S I'm a cat fan myself.

Still its sick! I compare it with those sick WTC jokes. In my opinion this is worse if it were real.  Screw humans killing eachother, using animals like this is far worse...

'Bonsai' trees are an Eastern art form where trees are grown from seed in small plant pots that restrict their growth creating a minature looking tree.

I'm growing a bonsai Blue Spruce. I've also sown some conkers and acorns in the hope that they'll sprout.

Oh, and yay cats!

One of my hallmates last year asked me if I missed my family. I thought about it, and said "well, I miss my cat..."

Go to  Landover Baptist (http://www.landoverbaptist.org) and read their forums, it doesn't make it any less fake. People play along with it in order to further fool those gullible people who believe.

I remember that site being featured on a childerens news program in the UK because thousands of people, also fooled by it had been writing in in disgust. They reassured everyone that no animals were harmed during the making. That was at least three years ago.

Ah Landover Baptist, one of the finest pieces of satire on the internet.

Gang, Bonzai Kitten is a joke. Its not real.  No cats were harmed. If it were real, it would be sick, but it isn't. That makes it funny.

it's considered a hoax... a hoax is when you get an email saying, for example that whateverfile.exe is a virus, and you should search for it, and if you find it (it's usually some file that windows runs on) you should immediately reboot in dos mode, and delete it! (it of course gives all steps you should take to do this :) lol)

and i quote from my virus reference:

A hoax is a message, typically distributed via E-mail or newsgroups, which is written to deliberately spread fear, uncertainty and doubt. Just like the viruses they purport to describe, they are sent from user to user/s, slowing network and Internet traffic and causing damage 'per se', by wasting users time and by prompting well meaning, (albeit unnecessary) clean up procedures. These messages may be regarding completely fictitious viruses and trojans, or they may be misleadingly warning users about legitimate programs (a common target of past hoaxes was screensavers and more recently, Windows utilities). Hoaxes prey on the lack of technical knowledge and the goodwill of all those that receive a hoax. Generally, hoaxes are warnings about threats to your computer. They tend to follow a standard pattern, and should you receive an e-mail that contains the following characteristics, view it with doubt, if not downright suspicion.

Summary of eRumor:
This email says there is a Japanese man in New York stuffing kittens into bottles and rearing them so they'll take on the shape of the bottle._ They are being called "bonsai" kittens and have become the rage in New York, China, Indonesia, and New Zealand._ The email refers you to the website at www.bonsaikitten.com

The Truth
The bonsai kitten website is a hoax, created as a joke by some students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology._ There are numerous published reports about the site, but one of the best is a article in USA Today from 2-20-2001by Janet Kornblum._ According to Kornblum, the site was set up shortly after Christmas, 2000, satirize ''the human belief of nature as commodity."_ Kornblum interviewed one of the creaters who used an alias, "Dr. Michael Wong Chang."_ He said one of the main aims was to "punish the hypocritical and easily offended by upsetting them, and to amuse those who understand."_ The result has been an international outcry by animal rights groups who say that even if the site is a joke, they object to the fact that it displays and could provoke animal cruelty._ In response to concerns from Internet readers, the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals investigated the site and found no evidence of animal abuse._ No kittens have actually been put through the torture described on the site._ An FBI investigation was also opened.

The number of people this manages to fool simply astounds me.

How DARE you do such a thing to an animal! You are going to PAY for what you have done to these animals!! You will be hearing from us and the Animal Legal Defense Fund Lawyers!

Dear Molly,

We at Bonsai Kitten firmly support your goal of preventing cruelty to animals. It is very important that all procedures be done using only USDA approved Bonsai Kitticulture techniques. Our charter firmly states that no kitten shall be subjected to inhumane treatments! You can rest assured, our kittens feel no pain using the proper procedures. If you have not been licensed to verify that you know the proper techniques then you should not try this at home! Remember, you cannot trim a kitten! We would like to invite you to our facility to play with our latest collection of tetrahedral kitties, and our dodecahedral cat that is the mother of them all. Edwin A. Abbott would be so very proud!

This has rapidly gone from highly amusing to even more so. I blame TG's posting of an actual article describing it as a hoax and its origins, and the subsequent lack of attention given it by those who want to be outraged. Go write the Onion some nasty letters about its articles or something, willya? Morons.

Incidentially, I reccomend all of you bookmark this thread for future reference on whose arguments are to be utterly ignored and whose not.:D

On a completely random note, the math thread is quite possibly the funniest thing I have ever read. In a Homer Simpson shouting "NERDS" kinda way.

Also, watching two kittens fighting is one of the most wholesome fun things you can do.

This website, horrible as it is, is not the worst thing out there.  What's even more amazing is the conspiracy coverup of the dangers of DHMO (http://www.dhmo.org/).  How can we continue to tolerate the use of such a chemical?  Honestly, I don't see why the issue can be ignored.  We should be outraged!

Depends on how mature of a Christian he is (mature meaning, has he been a Christian for long).  I consider myself a hard-core Christian too, but I realize that the site doesn't take itself seriously...especially considering where it links to.  That being said, there are a couple of thoughtful bits on the site.  Even the concept that Jesus was black is not without merit.  He had some African blood in him (take a look at the geneology) and he was probably pretty dark already from being born in the Middle East.

Oh, well he's got absolutely no sense of humour when it comes to his religion... and he won't let any remark go without an argument. He also claimed recently to be able to explain every question man has about the universe. I tried to tell him that just saying 'because God says so' is a tad lame, but he wasn't having any of it.

He's a proper holier-than-thou job, and will happily tell me I'm going to hell if I bring the subject up. We have a theory that he only does the whole religion thing to be annoying... even my other christian friends find this guy's attitude irritating. Unfortunately, this side of his character only came out after we had signed the contract for the house, so now we're stuck with him. Luckily, he's a computer science student, so he's handy to have around - otherwise we'd have had to have ***** slapped him down for his own good by now :)

Well, by his logic I can sin as much as I want, because if I don't go to church and embrace God and so forth then I'm going to Hell no matter how good a person I am.

Eh, sounds like he's too full of himself to be an effective Christian witness.  There's the matter of tact...:wtf: Converting people indirectly by showing them how the Christian's life has been changed is A-1 SUPAR... not by throwing the book at them without taking the time to learn where they're coming from.

People like that give Christianity a bad name, and I don't blame people for being turned off by it. :(

The thing with Christianity is that God loves you more than you could ever love him, and that he is the one going all out to reach you.  Going to church and stuff is a response based on a growing relationship, not a condition for starting that relationship.

Feh, I just went through all this over on the TTLG board (http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=59459).

Suffice it to say that I'm neither so emotionally needy nor so creatively vacant that I need to believe in a magic man in the sky to make me feel warm-n-fuzzy and serve as an answer to all the "unanswerable" questions.

Zylon: pretty good reasoning there. I disagree with you on the ideal god thing, Aphrodite would be much more fun to have around.

Greek Mythology is much better written than Judeo/Christian Mythology either way. The plot is better and the characters are more likable.

I've been through several of these kinds of debates.  They're rather annoying, for both sides I think.  Each side, in its own way, is completely convinced of its argument and can come up with plenty of rhetorical reasons to support it.  But I think we can all agree that you can't change someone's mind who doesn't want his mind changed.  I'd like to make a few points, though.

1. The Christian faith is NOT blind.  It is not believing in the absence of reason - it is more like trusting that something will happen in the future because you've seen it in the past.  In the Bible, faith is always coupled with knowledge.  C.F. Acts 17:11, "Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true" (emphasis mine).  They were comparing a new teaching to see if it was valid based on an old teaching that they held to be true.  In the same way, God does not discourage honest questioning of our own.

2. God reveals himself to those who seek him.  If you're not looking for him, you're not likely to find him.  However, if you make an honest inquiry and you're willing to risk being wrong, you might be surprised at what you find.  But God is not going to show himself to someone who does not give him the benefit of the doubt.

You may think that this conflicts with my earlier statement that God is the one going all out to reach you.  It doesn't.  God puts many clues on your path, but you're not going to see them if you refuse to believe the possibility that they exist.  It's like billboards on a highway: No matter how many billboards there are, you're not going to see them if you're driving with your eyes closed.

3. God allows temorary evil in order to reach a greater good.  The problem from our perspective is that we often can't understand what he's doing.  Think of it like chess.  If we didn't have the mental capacity to see forward several moves, we would be astonished to see someone sacrifice his queen in order to gain a better position.  We would have no idea what he was doing, and we would conclude from our limited perspective that his objective was not to win the chess game but to forfeit his chess pieces.  We might further say that the player was being deceptive in claiming to wish to win the game, that he could be lying to us, or any number of other things.

Hopefully, food for thought. :)

I could argue all of those points, but the problem is that this has all already been brought up before in earlier threads; just look at my responses on those. This is an easy subject to argue on though, so I will join in if you want. :D

Meh, I'm not feeling too inclined to argue either, since arguing doesn't really seem to accomplish anything very often.

If anyone finds themself in a bookstore in the future and feels inclined to page through a book on this subject, try Lee Strobel's The Case for Christ or The Case for Faith.  The books chronicle how the author came to be a Christian.  They provide some great analyses, as they were written by a journalist with a probing mind and a keen sense of detail.  They're quite interesting to read.

If you have a spare moment in the bookstore, read through a few pages.  Easy reading, challenging material. :)

Didn't know there was a third.  But TCFC and TCFF aren't all that big, and you can easily read a few pages without needing to refer to the rest of the book.

I'll keep it in mind next time I'm in a bookstore.  Knowing your opposition is A-1 SUPAR. :)

This review is pretty much along my lines of thinking...

Quote
I was a Christian before I read this book....
...and I still am. But read on, this is a review. I believe in a God who allows us to honestly and openly search and question truth. Why? Well, if, as I believe, he's the embodiment of truth and of honesty, then what does he have to fear? Anyway, the book, the book...Smith writes well and his arguments flow sensibly. His points are clear and he does not tend to hang on a point too long once he's made it. It was a good mental workout to read because he raises issues that I'd never considered before. However, I only give it 3 stars because I'm 19 and am not wise with age, yet I could easily defeat every anti-god and anti-God argument Smith brought to the table (foundationally and at each point) with quotes directly from the Bible and occasionally from the worldview I derive directly from it. I recommend reading this book, critically as anyone thinking person should, and I would also recommend C.S. Lewis's shorter books, Mere Christianity and The Problem of Pain. The books are written on about the same level as The Case Against God and will give you two sides of a debate so you can do something many Christians and atheists seem to fail at: weigh evidence and truly make your own decision. We all owe it to ourselves to make the best decision we can. Did you meet every "Christian" and "atheist" alive and learn their motives? Have you read every book written? Did you stand by as the galaxies began their spins? No, so do not judge before you discover at least a little. Don't count God out yet. Neither count him in. This book puts up a well-written fight against him, so read it if you haven't already.

I should also say that although some atheistic positions can be argued effectively using reasoning on a secular basis, others can't be argued unless you accept certain theistic positions.

I did quite like a bit from that review you quoted--

No, that's not quite it.  The Bible says certain things about God, and I accept them because I have already accepted the authority of the Bible.  As far as accepting the authority of the Bible, that is based on other things.  I don't believe the Bible is true just because it says so.  I believe the Bible is true because of its internal consistency, its correlation with archaeology, and its phophetic record.

Not exactly. He reckons that God (and not just God, but all the world's ancient gods) was an alien, who visited Earth and wowed the locals with some flash technology, meddled with our genetics a bit and then buggered off having promised to return.

Interestingly, he uses a lot of the same Biblical stuff you would probably quote, but for a very different purpose to yourself. All about interpretaion, I guess, but Chariots of the Gods (his first book) was far more entertaining than anything the Church ever came up with...

You've got to be joking the bible is less coherent and has more contradictions per page than The Sun (aggessive right wing UK tabliod) on a bad day. What exactly is the Bible though. The Bible has been derived from approved scripts put together for Emperor Constuntine by the Bishop of Caesaria. Lots of Material was left out. You can't seriously belive it's the sole infallable word of god.

Well, we let off some smaller bangers and a couple of uber-loud double airbombs, then a couple of crackley roman candles. But then the old drunk bloke a few doors down started screaming at us that Bonfire Night was last week, so we decided to go to a bit of field near us to let the rest off. When we got there though, the church bells were ringing, and it suddenly hit us - November 11th. We felt a little bit guilty at this point, so we decided to stop, and do the rest of 'em tomorrow.

That cluster rocket's gonna be 5w337...
