Title: Call for Voice Acting for Deus Ex Machina
Post by: Goober5000 on November 07, 2002, 08:31:44 pm
If you haven't played Deus Ex Machina (see sig) yet, go check it out!  It's a lot of fun, and it's the first new, playable, bug-free campaign in several months.

That said, it's rather heavy in dialogue, and it's hard to keep track of what everybody is saying when you're in the middle of combat.  So I'm putting out a call to anybody who's interested in voice acting to hop on and make DEM even better than it already is. If you've got a decent voice and good acting skills, please post here, and indicate your request for a particular character.  (I reserve the Mission Designer character, since that's me anyway, but the others are all up for grabs.)

I'd also like to hear a voice sample before I assign anyone a part.  So please post an attachment or a link to a sample file, or PM me and I'll give you my email address.  Any line of dialogue from DEM will do.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I'll believe it when I play it...

Anyways, voices. I'd help, but I sound like Michael Cain, I'm told. And not in a good way...

Play it. :D I extensively beta-tested it before releasing it, and since then there's only been one small bug report which was quickly remedied. :)

By the way, if anyone is afraid of pronouncing Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, I have attached a WAV file of someone saying it.  I also included a pronunciation guide in the readme.  Here it is for your convenience...

I was able to teach myself over the course of about a day.  It's not that hard if you do it one step at a time, and ignore the crazy Welsh spelling. :)

Well see, I did give your campaign a shot...

A) it was far from "bug-free"
B) It just sucked, it was boring, and stupid. Therse a difference between a well-done campaign that has quirks to make it funny, and something thats just a total waste of time - trash that was just put together in under an hour.

my point: dont waste people's time asking for voice actors

Vadar: :p

I can actually pronounce Llanfair quite well since I actually visited it last year, and my uncle is a Welsh sheep farmer. Anyway, I suppose I could act as the captain of the Llanfair if you wanted me too...

Damn, you're a *****, this guy has spent his precious time on this campaign and you have the ****in' nerve to come in here and say it sucks?

Let's see you do better.

If you don't want to be a ****ing voice actor don't reply to this damn thread!

Anyway, Goober5000. Do you kow how to do the Vasudans stuff? I can find somebody to do it for you.:D I encountered very few bugs. Course I can't get past the first mission. When i did that thing where you fail it five times, and it lets you go to the next one. I ended up in a mission where i had a Shivan Super laser on a Ulysses, and orders to protect the ship with the long name, but it wasn't there. Just me and the Colossus.

woah there buddy, settle! You and Vadar play nice.  Like holy sheep man, keep things civil, or else things will just fudgin fall apart around here.  Holy carp man!

On other notes, I still have to play the darn thing:blah: I'll get back to you all in a bit.

vadar, quit being a jerk.  Criticism is good, flaming is not. If you see a bug, tell me what it is.

GalacticEmperor: That would be good; but if you can pronounce Llanfair well I would suggest rather you be NTF Command, as the guy says it several times.  I'll PM you my email.

Hades: Who does a good Vasudan?  If you can get them to jump on, that'd be great.

I have no idea what happened with the skip-mission, though; that sounds very strange.  (Perhaps it has something to do with the red-alert?)  You shouldn't be able to fail the mission - even if you fail to protect the entire shipment, as long as you defend the Llanfair you're still able to red-alert.  However, if you press Alt-J you'll blow up automatically. :) Replay the mission and try it again.

I'm replaying it now. Probably does have something to do with the red alert.

But not a bug?

Not being funny Goober, but you kind of provoked vadar's reaction by comming in here and announcing your campaign to be bug free... OK, bug reports should really be by email or PM, but you kinda laid down the gauntlet, didn't you?

Well since I suggested getting voice for this campaign I suppose I should sign up to do some. I`ll get together some examples later today.

Huh?  Saying the campaign is bug-free is not laying down the gauntlet.  I didn't go "if any of you say there's a bug, you'll be banned in short order".  No, all I did was make a simple statement, and vadar's response was a flame.  And AFAIK, the campaign is bug free.

I haven't encountered any bugs. Anyway, saying it sucked, was boring, and was stupid was not helpful criticism. Vadar does this to loads of threads. He comes in and starts *****ing like no tomorrow. If I said what I really thought about him, I'd be banned.

I thought it was a really cool campaign. And I'm glad that voice acting might be possible now.

And Goober5000. I can't find the thread. But I saw one eralier this week that had some Vasudan voices in them.

Oh, right, I saw that one too.

*searches*

Found it: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,11161.0.html

I asked if they'd do voice acting.  Hope they respond. :)

Suit yourself.

Vasudan voices are dead easy. Just get yourself a copy of Goldwave (http://goldwave.com/release.html), record the speech you want, then mess about with the effects (specifically the 'mechanize' one, natch)

Come on, I need more people!  Only about three have responded, and there are many more characters.  I need more voices! :D

It's a short campaign, so there's not much work.  And there are some wingmen with only one or two lines, if anyone would prefer doing smaller parts. :)

ok...I just had quite possibly one of my best ideas ever. Find some kind of audio capture program, and one of those thingys where you can type in the text and it says it. Pronnounces it all funny too. I need to play the camp. yet, but from what I have seen on HLP it sounds like comedy is the primary goal.

Ehhhhh.....

I dunno.  I think that would sound dumb instead of comedic.

Or get the Microsoft Speech SDK and use "Microsoft Wave" aka wedit.exe, which is designed for editing TTS waves and has a built in TTS to wave function. (I'm not sure it's pitch/energy editing stuff actually does anything though.)
Title: WELSH!
Post by: pyro-manic on November 15, 2002, 09:19:28 am
Just played the campaign - liked it a lot!

I'd be more than willing to do the voice of the Llanfair...'s captain - it hints at him being Welsh, and guess what? I AM Welsh!  I'm from south Wales, so the accent is different, but I can do a bloody good impression if you want me to!

Mail me with whatever you want done (if you're interested) at [email protected]

PS
Ignore what vadar said. He sounds like a whiny little sod to me. I know people like that, and it's best to ingore them. (You could always hit them, but that's kinda tricky to do down a phoneline). It's quite a clever campaign!

Thanks pyro, and thanks for volunteering.  That would be great!  Email sent. :D

EdrickV: I got the SDK, and was rather unimpressed.  I think I'll stick with people.  But thanks for the suggestion. :)

EDIT: Hmm... :drevil:
This is for vadar_1... (http://community.the-underdogs.org/smiley/armed/hammerhead.gif)

Headphones can be used as microphones, though only one side will be likely be active. (And microphones can be used as headphones except both sides get combined.)

I need two or three more people if I'm going to have enough voices.  Last call for people from this board.  If I don't get enough volunteers here, I'm going to start asking my friends at college. :)

Why should everyone acting for FS2 missions have a perfect English or American accent?

FS2 is supposedly set in a universe where the whole Terran race are working together. The more accents we have the better in my book. Well, as long as we can understand what you`re saying that is :)
