Title: GVSC Imhotep
Post by: Sesquipedalian on November 10, 2002, 06:03:01 am
This is a Vasudan science ship I've been working on the last few days for The Scroll of Atankharzim (http://www.angelfire.com/space/sesquipedalian/).  It's coming along nicely, and I felt like showing it off. :D

Click here (http://www.angelfire.com/space/sesquipedalian/misc/imhoteprender.html) to see a render of the GVSC Imhotep.
(Please note, I'm not trying to make a whup-ass render here, so don't bother mentioning the lack of engine glows, etc., because I don't care. :))

Original mesh by Ryx, modified and textured by me.  Still needs LODding, and turreting (which ought to be a short job).

Difficult to tell from the render but to me the shape doesnt seem quite right for a Vasuden ship.

I think it looks very Vasudan, personally.  Ryx did an excellent job on it. :)

realy, from that render it looks rather boxy
not that it's bad, but would make a better tarren ship than vasudan, Ryx does tarren ships more than vasudan from what I've seen so it is not supriseing.
maybe you should show it from diferent sides with better lighting, it could just be the faceted shadeing you used
the textures are, interesting, I like them, though the very front of it needs better UV maping, and in general the UV mapping could be improved, but it's ok, for the most part

I think it's darn good (though probaly a little too boxy), definately a vasudan ship. Those two rudders on the bottom make me picture it floating down the nile with Vasudans on top throwing HEADZ to teh crocs below

Imhoteph was the guy who made it possible for the Great Pyramid at Giza to be built, one of the most famous ancient engineers ever, and the perfect name for the Vasudan Science cruiser we've all waited so long for (or at least I have been) . While this ship could be Terran, It's ambiguous enough to let the textures decide what species it's going to be, and these have made it Vasudan - top notch stuff. Could we have in game sizes and polycount please? And different views as well?

One suggestion though, if I may. Assuming it's not going to be too big, try blacking out and outlining the narrow black and blue bit at the very front to make it the main bridge viewport? It looks like a good spot for one to me.

Try this thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,8445.0.html). This is my original model and is little different from Sesq's.
Ignore those horrible maps shown in later screens.:ick

Looks plenty Vasudan to me. :)

Good job.

Vasudan Hippocrates. Note bad though.

ok I take back my nonvasudan comments, it just needs to be smooth shaded

Um, sorry...but to me it looks far too much like the Hippocrates, even with all the Vasudan textures.  I looked at the other thread, and got even more of a Hippocrates impression.

Suppose you took that forky thing hanging off the bottom and flipped it back to front, so the prongs were to the rear.  I wonder if that might work...it would allude a bit to the design of a Sobek's tail.

meh. Screams Hippocrates to me.

Then it could just be my biology teacher.

More angles added.  Same link as before, or just click here (http://www.angelfire.com/space/sesquipedalian/misc/imhoteprender.html).

It looks cool, don't misunderstand, it's just too much like the Hippocrates what with the underslung thing.  Imagine flipping the fork back to front, like I suggested before - I think that would work.  Alternatively, eliminate the extender pillar and just put the fork smack dab against the back of the upper body.

No rotating bits? Not even a radar dish? :(

I'm only a n00b at modelling, GE.  That I UVed it well and tweaked the geometry a bit is something for the likes of me to be proud of as it is. :)

I never liked the Rotating rader anyways

seemed liek a step backward. Ships in the future should have Sensor domes if they must have anything noticable, but Dishes and Antennae would be major targets in battle.

The only rotaty thingie that made sense to me was maybe the gas miners and the AWACS as it is "Powerful" and has the crystaline stuff. I still say they should just have AWACS panels aroudn the ship though :)

And how did the rotating "solar array" do anytihng on the Faustus anyhow?

It is a good model.  It looks nice, and those extra angles provide some good eye candy.

but it's the GVSC Hippocrates... :-P

:)
