Anyone know where i can find a very easy guide for the absolute basics for 3ds Max 5. Things like what all the buttons do etc...
I would like a guide that is recommended by someone so that i know it is easy to follow rather than searching in google and spending ages trying one because it's incomprehensive.

If its anything like Lightwave, the manual that came in the box is damned handy. :D

No one is flinging accusations. Just pointing that the manual often has exactly what you're after.
Did you try 3dcafe or Flay.com?

Well, the differences between The MAX4 and 5 seem cosmetic at most to me. I find that I can do a tut for MAX 4 with no problem.
The tutorials that came with MAX and the User reference (that's the help file. You know, press F1) should get you started easily enough.
If not...

I have the same problem... it's the school's version of Max so I get a nag screen every time I load it up telling me it's not for commercial use  and we don't get a manual.

How about this (http://www.planetquake.com/q3empire/data/tutorials/modeling/basic_box/basic_box.htm). It's for MAX 3.1, but should be an ok walkthorugh.
I'll see if I can something better.
Edit:
Here's another one (http://12.39.150.71/tutorials.asp?id=54&mode=Display&name=Max%2BBasics&ct=Miscellaneous&author=Andy&email=aznandy%40excite%2Ecom&url=hala%2Epyar%2Ecom). It's for MAX 2.5.
Again things are slightly (sometimes more so) different in newer versions, but generally...
