Title: Need stations
Post by: Wildfire on November 14, 2002, 06:32:33 am
I need two stations for my campaign.  One needs to be a military type and the other a civillian station.

Both need to be bigger than the Arcadia (the military station preferrably similar in size to the Colossus).

Can somone help me out please or point me in the right direction to where I could find one.

A station the size of the colossus?:wtf:

Anyway, someone once made an installation built into an asteroid, there was a terran and a vasudan one. I think they were called the scylla and the cheops, though I am not sure. They always look very civilian to me, a bitr like a house with a front porch.

If anyone's go the Dunbar station I did awhile back you're welcome to use it Wildfire. Sadly when my Hd's went to hell I lost all my old GotP MOD files :|

It certainly makes more sense than a SHIP the size of the Collossus.

Theres that weaponless GTI Atlantis... ~600-700km long IIRC. It orbits earth, but id think it would throw off the gravitational pull of the moon at least. And rise the currents of the earth to deadly altitudes

Why would it have gravity? It isn't rotating.

Gravity is an effect that comes from Mass, not spin. 700km of ship steel is going to have discernable gravity. That's larger than some natural moons in our solar system.

The Atlantis is less than 60km, not 600

I was using Vadar's quote. Still 60km is large enough to have a discernible gravitational effect on local bodies.

When thinking of stations, enough consideration to volume cannot be given. In theory, you can pack the entirety of the world's population into a cube 1.5 miles on a side. I doubt that would be coomfortable, though. Take that up to 5mi on a side, and you've got a HUGE amount of volume with which to work.

You want a huge Vasudan station? The PVI Karnak is pretty big. Get it from the Port.

whoops, added an extra 0 to the fred scale... o well

how big was the death star? it musta had a gravitational impact on Alderaan (sp?)... that is, until the DS proceeded to blow it up.

btw... Hades... *smack*

The cause of gravity is mass
The cause of an electrical field is a charge
the cause of a magnetic field is a moving charge

that better be right because i just had a magnetism quiz on this crap. (and the 4 hand rules... 4th involving your fist pointing to the direction of the teacher, and middle finger pointing up towards the ceiling, where F represents the Finger and U represents the direction (up). )

Cheers War.  I'll use the Dunbar for one of the civillian stations.  I tried to contact Eth to see if we could salvage somthing but I haven't heard from him.

Brilliant.  I don't need it yet but I will later.  Just saved me some time.

The Arcadia installtions are far too small and weak to serve as a proper command base.  They look fine as factories and trading stations but that's about it.

I still need the military station.  It would help if it was "similar" to the arcadia but much larger and togher looking.

I once saw a render I think it was of the Arcadia Mk II (maybe it was called something else). It was silver and grey kind of colours. Dunno if that might be any use.

For another vasudan station, there's also the GVI Cairo. It's a single piece mod, so it's easier to deal with than the three piece Karnak. It's slightly smaller than the Arcadia, but is much easier to use and much better looking than the Karnak, IMHO.

To say nothing of the fact that the Cairo is armed with anti-cap beams, too... :D

Yeah, the Cairo rocks, but then so does my modified Arcadia. It has AAAf and flak all over it, plus three MGreen!

I can modify an arcadia to give it whatever weapons I need easily.  I'm looking for a military base that cries out HQ!

That's one reason why I'm hoping to find one as big as the colossus.  It also means I can hopefully have several of the larger cap ships docked to it making it look like a proper Command base.

How about This (http://www.planetheck.co.uk/Station.wrl) it`s just a concept design but your welcome to it if you want it.

What format is that in?

VRML

Most software supports it, i did think about saving it as a blender file but not everyone uses blender and the dxf export on the latest version of blender is somewhat dodgy.

Your geometry is all screwy there, Miggy. It could be the VRML exporter, it could be 3dExploration being a *****. Either way, the result (both in preview and in an exported LWO) is a lot of misaligned polygons that need to be flipped.

Hmm, might just be the export, i played with 3dexploration a long time ago and i remember it didnt like some vrml stuff.

Anyway, i imported it into 3d studio and it should look like this (imported properly).

I exported it as a dxf from 3d studio, the dxf file can be found Here (http://www.planetheck.co.uk/Station.dxf)

I have a 6km long starbase called Vanguard.
Has 3 LODs, looks good, has lots of weapons ( anti-capship missile launchers, beam cannons, ultra-heavy-long-range-cannons and anti-fighter weapons), 4 fighterbays and 2 cruiser bays.:D

Just one thing... it's not fully pathed.

WOW!:eek2:

How ready for use is it? Can Freespace handle it? Are you going to release it?;7

Oh, and one more thing: Picture....Picture........

I am currently in another city, 60km from my PC, and I ain't getting back before the weekend. However, I sent the Vanguard to LtNarol 2 days ago, so ask him to send it to you. (and allso ask for the CapshipWeapons Pack).
I tested the Vanguard a few times, works o.k., just needs some paths!

Can you alter the lower struts so they are pointing upwards.  Apart from that I like would like to use the model when it's finished.

Sounds perfect.  Can you finish the pathing or would I need to ask somone else to do it.  One way or the other I'll use this as well when it's finished if that's ok.

That's the problem. I can't do any pathing now.

Paths can only be seen in FRED, and I can't run Freespace 2 on my new PC .
(darn Windows XP, FS doesnt detect my 3D card - GForce 4 Ti4200, 64MB).

You'll probably need someone else to path is. You need the paths for subsystems and fighterbays - the turret paths are unnecesarry unless you want the AI to actually attack the turret.

I have XP and it runs with 32mb rage fury (ATI) , 32MB tntRiva(Nvidia), and my new 64MB ATI all in wonder 7200. May sound simplistic (sorry) but consider getting another card?

[EDIT]  Hey Lt Narol!!!! Give up the goods man, something that cool (even Unfinished) sounds awesome...

j/k

Trashman, I PM'd LtNarol and he said that he never even heard of the Vanguard before...
Title: ???
Post by: TrashMan on November 28, 2002, 03:02:15 am
WHAT?

I sent it to him 2 day's ago. Did he check his mail on Yahoo?

If he didn't get it than give me your e-mail and I'll send it to you in a day or two....

If only my web page would come on-line...

BTW. Does anyone know if there's some patch for FS2 that could fix my problem?

I'll try and put the Vanguard there for download (with pics)and then put the link here....

Sorry guys, I've kinda been out of touch with the rest of the world; been logging about 6 hours a night on texturing the ships for Exposition.  If all goes well, we'll have it released in mid or late December, the 25th is our targetted date.

A little progress report: 4/4 capital ships completed, 4/6 fighters completed, 3/3 props completed, and one base darn near completed.

And now I return to my world of trueSpace and Paint shop ;)

o.k.

Get the vanguard here:

http://www.inet.hr/~tstanici/gtsbvang.htm

I'll try to add the main page and links to some other ships and weapons (as soon as I find some page-making tool).

If it doesn't work - download directly here:
http://www.inet.hr/~tstanici/Models/Vanguard.zip

weapons pack:

http://www.inet.hr/~tstanici/Models/CapWeap.zip

A fighter:
http://www.inet.hr/~tstanici/Models/Phoenix.zip

And a bomber:
http://www.inet.hr/~tstanici/Models/thunderbolt.zip

Well, the pics dn't work and the mnodel doesn't have textures. But what I can see from the solid view its very good.

have to get a gtifighter texture though but will do it tonight. Can't wait to put it to the test against the borg invasion (atlantis needs weapons so station the STBS near it... Great Job Trashman...
Title: wrong!
Post by: TrashMan on November 29, 2002, 02:33:26 pm
It has textures - it uses FS2 textures so there is no point in sending them too.

I added link for the Capship weapons pack, the Phoenix fighter and Thunderbolt bomber.

Sorry for the incovenience but I need to find FrontPage express to edit the pages. (No, my Win Xp does't have it.)

Firstyly appologies on the delayed reply, i started 12 hour days shortly after i posted that piccy :D

As for the model, it was intended as a concept image and i havent planned to develop it further, i can however make the changes to the model and make it available to anyone who wants to complete it.

TBH a complete station is beyond my skills atm, im just now working on my first cap ship :)
