Post by: Starfury on November 17, 2002, 08:31:30 pm
... and stop using Blender.  However, I need some reference material, and am hoping the Lightwavers among us can help.  Tutorials online, books, whatever.  Any suggestions would be helpful.  Thanks! :D

Naval Units and grond forces. Robots!!! PLEASE if you or anyone else can do smething with those files I sent you make them available if they ever get re-made for in game use! Especially the AT-At's and Gundam/Battle-Tech mechs. Getter 1 is a priority.. I understand you just wanted the lightwave files so if you don't want to deal with the rest give them away or delete them... Thanks.

Quick question:  I've decided as part of my learning that planets would be a good place to start.  However, I'm having some trouble with the atmospheric "glow", I guess you would call it.  I can't get it to work right.  Any ideas?  I think I need a 3rd layer (1: Surface, 2: Clouds, 3: Atmosphere), but I can't make it work right. Help please!

Planets huh? All right. you do need three layers just as you said but one thing to remember that a lot of people get wrong is to make the atmosphere verry thin. If the earth where an apple the atmosphere whould be about as thick as the peel. for the atmospheres apearence you want to go into the surface editer and make the transparency channel an incidence based gradiant then click the shaders tab select the edge transparency shader set it to transparent and and make the edge threshold something low like 0.120 this gives it the fuzzyness around the edges. as for the spheres TESELATION not globe and remember smoothing only goes so far, don't relly on it to much so make your spheres are about 15 segments. your cloud layer should be about 1/4 the distance betwean the surfacesphere and the atmosphere sphere.

Here are some shots I did of mars using these techniques.
also check out these sites for planet maps Planet Portal (http://gw.marketingden.com/planets/planets.html) and http://www.mmedia.is/%7Ebjj/ (http://www.mmedia.is/%7Ebjj/)

It would be nice if you fixed that. Have you had any luck with that planet?
