MODs you have installed are screwing the game up. Go to your FS2 folder, and from there to data folder, and from there to tables folder, and rename/delete the ships.tbl.

i haven't installed the freespace 1 port. just the derelict try-out, the aueos affair, and a couple of other campaigns. and re-naming the ships.tbl won't work either, it doesn't make a difference.

thanks anyway

Check for ships.tbls anywhere in the fs2 directory. tables in the main fs2 folder overide tables in the data and data/tables folder. tables in the data folder overide tables in the data/tables folder.

there isn't a ships tbl in the entire freespace directory, except the one i renamed. so technally there's not a single ships.tbl for the game to find. but it still doesn't work . before i isntalled any mods, i made a backup of the entire freespace directroy, but somehow the tbl dir of the backup is empty. perhaps someone can give me the original ships.tbl??? i would be very gratefull.

You can download one from my FAQ but now it appears that you`re using a Mod which comes as a .vp right?
If that is the case you can solve the problem by renaming the extention of the .vp (I always use .vpDisabled).

It's a better way to do it as you can then play the mod again simply by changing the name of the .vp back.

Happened to me recently in the all-mod file. It got corrupted and now I am doing it again from scratch (re-testing all the way, 2 days now half way done). I've decided NOT to include EVERYTHING like I did before but only the best and most unique stuff. I mean 10 types of cyclops where the only difference is the name is silly. but one like the Excaliber with a unique .pof at least sets it apart... I will end up enabling some basic FS2 weapons for the mod player ships like the Subach-7 and Rockeye/ Tempest.Hornet, and Trebuchet. That way no matter what you fly (Angel to X-Wing) you can use a basic weapon and it won't make FS2 work so hard in the weaps table. Less new weaps means less chance for conflicts... I really went nutz last time and learned my lesson (sorta)

here's 2 pics of the Weapons from Tales of the EA Janus (A Bab5 mod campaign) they are the Nova-X front Beam and The Narn Laser... I couldn't get the Nova Turrent Laser to work just the Front ones in the turrent slots. These weapons are in the VP file of that mod campaign. Also the Shadow skinned Nova-X  destroyer is there BUT though it works in game it will NOT fire weapons (Beam free no effect) it has turrents and pof data seems fine)... Mounted the new weapons on a regualr Nova and they worked!!! Screens:

Did you hack the mission? Hippo's correct, if you opened it and tried to make it easier, then saved it without editing the missin in a text editor, then the Bastion is a Ulysses.

If you haven't edited it, if you haven't installed any MODS, then it should work fine.

When you reinstalled, did you uninstall first? If you don't, it doesn't help. Uninstall, THEN install it again.

If you didn`t edit the mission sending you a new copy won`t help. The original is still in the .vp and unchanged.

I explained how to solve the problem in my FAQ but if that wasn`t clear enough here goes.

1) Rename your Freespace2\data directory to something like Data-old.

2) Create a new folder and call it Data

3) Copy your  Freespace2\Data-old\players folder into Data.

4) Have a look in your main freespace2 folder. Make sure you`re viewing the extentions of files (.jpg .exe etc).

The following is a list of official FS2 .vp files. If you have anything with a .vp extention that isn`t one of these rename it to .vpDISABLED Don`t worry if you don`t have them all.

root_fs2.vp
smarty_fs2.vp
sparky_fs2.vp
sparky_hi_fs2.vp
stu_fs2.vp
tango1_fs2.vp
tango2_fs2.vp
tango3_fs2.vp
warble_fs2.vp

FS2 should work fine now.

what many troubles that could be spared if people used the -mod flag.

But then you couldn`t watch all the lovely cutscenes.

That aside why do you think I`m telling everyone to install different mods in different drawers :)

That's not a problem :) But I made sure that my FAQ said to make seperate data drawers cause it's easier for the people using the original .exe and also cause I figured that most likely the SCP would implement mod choosing based on a similar system to what they did :)
