I think I'll go ahead on designing a personal fighter-craft. I've seen others do it, and I figured I'd give it a go. I can only hope it'll come out all right. I post any major progress here, and definately some pics when the model is close to modeling completion. my only concern is texturing. I've never made custom textures, and as of now, I only have TS1 to work with. and because of TS1, mu models aren't compatable with Kazan's tools, unless he's added support for TS models using something under TS3. It'd be great to have TS5, but I don't expect that to drop on my lap any time soon. well, tune in later for more progress info as I post it. if anyone cares anyways.

Look forward to seeing it. A quick tip on those textures... get UVRIP or UNWRAPPER plugins for TS. They might help a little by generating surface maps of your object.
For god's (or rather your own) sake do NOT get TS5. I had the distinct displeasure of evaluating that steaming pile of sh*t and it doesn't work. None of the booleans work. It will cause internal model errors faster than Bill Gates can pocket a profit, it suffers from memory leakage worse than a Microsoft operating system... need I go on.
TS3 or (better yet) TS4 are definately the ones to get if you don't mind spending money on them. I've never used TS4 but from what I've heard it's the best one around. TS3 is available from Calligari for around $100 (US) and I think TS4 is $150-$200 (US). http://www.caligari.com/products/index.html ("http://www.caligari.com/products/index.html")
UVRIP and UNWRAPPER are both available at http://www.primitiveitch.com/php/catalog.php?uiLicense=Free ("http://www.primitiveitch.com/php/catalog.php?uiLicense=Free")

For textures, don't dismiss Lithunwrap. Don't have the link on hand - but I've seen and heard lots of good things about it. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Lithunwrap is good, but I reckon UVMapper is bettwer, as you can split the mapping so you have one map for each side - can get some really good, detailed, textures with this, albeit you need a bit of experimenting.
Just my preference (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

thank you for the suggestions. actually I have Lithunwrap, but I don't know quite how to use it in conjunction with texturing. is there a tutorial out there? also I'm in the early modeling stage. I came across a design from one of my favorite games, and am using that as a basis. anyone who's played Starfox 64 (I know it isn't the greatest, but it was pretty damn fun.) should reconize the design (and no, it isn't the Arwing).
Oh, I have UVMapper too, but just like Lithunwrap, I don't know how to use it. any help would be greatly apprieciated.

well, as promised, here is a pic of my personal fighter-craft, the Wolfen MKIII. it's still in development, but I wanted to se what you guys thought of it. I may tweak the design based on any suggestions I recieve. here's the link to the pic:

Very nice , what a klingon fighter would look like if klingons made fighters.
Truespace v2.0 works with Kazan's PCS.
PC Plus had it on a cover disk about 2 years ago if you can get back issues.

grr, texturing sucks! with TS1 I'm forced to use either planular, sphereical, or cylidrical UVs. I have Lithunwrap but I can't figure it out! do any other users have any helping hints for me? I also have UV Mapper if that's any help.
-
modding is hard. after all of my work with Lithunwrap, the conversion never worked. when I brought up Modelview, the model didn't show up at all!guess I'll be using TS1 for texturing from now on. blast it! if only I had a higher version! (or the money for one for that matter)
-
AH HORSE****! after all my owrk on texturing in TS1, I converted the model, and realized I forgot to flip the normals! (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/mad.gif) why? why must all the bad things happen to me? well, enough whining, I just hope TS1 has a flip normal function. if not, I'm gonna be pissed.

well, I guess I was a little too harsh with my last comment. anyways, I have a textured version now (though these textures are subject to change depending on when I can get a better program or get Lithunwrap to work right. or perhaps UV Mapper). the pic is here. just keep in mind this is my first real go at a ship, try not to insult it too much. thank you.

Where do you get UVMapper?

Can you texture files, THEN DXF them and move them to TS? I have TS1 too, and this would improve a lot of my models considerably...
-
Hehehe - I see you like Rhino too... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
Stryke, AFAIK, when converting from Rhino to TS via DXF, all the textures are discarded. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)
FYI, I'm almost finished with a Rhino to POF tutorial. Updates will be posted here ("http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/Forum2/HTML/000672.html").

Hey sandwich, what exactly is Rhino? How much does it cost? Where can I get it? and...
