Title: Turret test animation
Post by: mikhael on November 26, 2002, 03:18:01 am
Oooh. Look at the spinning turret (http://home.nc.rr.com/mikhael/Turret-Test.avi). Look at the barels go through the firing motion WAY too fast. Wheeeeeeeeee. DivX5.x format AVI

Now with cheesy metallic textures...

Dang that's cool!

Indeed the barrels moved to fast. Looked a bit like AAA, though.
Now slow it down, and increase the recoil(SP?).... :drevil:

Need  to add recoil to the SCP.

A pierced leather flogger? no, I don't think it looks like that.

Of course, i'm basing this entirely on the lesbians I know...

Now stay on topic.

Increasing the recoil is difficult because of the way I built the barrels. I need to extend the first "shank" to allow for more travel.

I'll have this set up in two ways later today. One file will have an IK chain with a goal null (for ease of tracking targets) and the other will just be a parented object (for people who want to do things by hand). From there's its pure surfacing work.

I just got some horrible horrible visual imagery there. :shaking: Please please slow the barrels down.

I'm working on it. :D

always wondered why laser weapons would have recoil... oh well, I guess i wonder too much :P

Honestly, I went to bed last night wondering the same thing. If it helps, I spent a lot of time on those high poly weapon models figuring out what the bits were, so I could put them in the "right" places. ;) That's too much thinking.

Besides: they're not lasers. They're pulsed particle projectors, like the PBCs in Independence War. THAT should explain the recoil. Simple newtonian physics. ;)

I've updated the animation with slower barrels. :D

Sweet!

I like the frame counter. Reminds me of ILM* animation tests for some reason.

*Well, not only ILM.

I turn on the frame overlay when I'm trying to work out timing. I forgot to turn it back off. :D

mmh, my screen is an electron ( so particle ) projector, and last time I checked, there was no recoil  ( sorry I'm being stupid :p ). recoil is to decrease the efforts due to powder ignition, so there's no explosion or anything when an enrgy weapon shoots methink, so there should ve no recoil.

If you want to be technical, Venom, your monitor does have a continuous rearward force acting upon it as a result of the expulsion of photons from the screen. The area of effect and emission density is, however, too low to overcome the inertia of the monitor, and thus it stays in place. Ramp up the emission density and lower the area of effect, and a noticible thrust can be generated. This is the basis for all particle emission propulsion systems (releasing jets of charged particles rather than combustion exhuast).

Now, quit making me rationalize past the standard 'hey, it looked cool at the time...'. ;)

Updated animation with new metallic materials. Wheeee.

Adding the metallic effects increased the rendering time by 200% :D It took over an hour and a half to render this little 10sec clip.
