Six of one or a half dozen of the other, really.  It's still the same amount of data.

Just put up a big sign suggesting they get a download manager first.  I use GetRight, but this one is free: http://www.real.com/download/

Probably best to do smaller VP files. Make several of em, just smaller. A 70mb download would take a few years for 56kers anyway...

That sucks. Why would you have to depend on other people to get the things you need. Why don't you simply get ADSL? It's almost as good as Broad band. It's fast reliable and you can get the speed of up to 2 MB/s which is 40 times faster than the 56Ker. And besides, it's much cheaper than BB. But there is even something far better than BB and it's satelite connection. Ah, the joy of 40 Mbits/s

Cable can't be better than ADSL since ADSL is of a more "younger" date. :p By the way, what's the connection speed you are using?

I say the single big file is the best - nothing more irritating than fiddling around when you don't have top. And I say this as a 56k er who understands the value of night time - we regularly download 600 + MB ISOs from Kazaa with no real trouble. (Linux ISOs, for Warez fearing Admins.)

Post by: Hudzy on December 01, 2002, 10:09:26 am
Well I'm on 56k and I have to say 70 megs is no big deal. Just the other week I was downloading a couple of 800 mb movies. Go for the big one.

Nope none of the staff have up to date files I'm afraid, I'm currently added subsystem paths to the remaining 60+ ships so the whole thing needs reuploading once done.

Post by: Woomeister on December 01, 2002, 11:44:44 am
I might be looking for external beta testers in a few days/weeks, or I might just release the thing :)

as for a breakdown of the status page:

Ships 98%: Adding some paths and doing final tweaks, this is the stat for the entire campaign set of mods.

Music 100%: Done ages ago, 2 new tracks and a few briefing tracks from FS1.

Weapons 97%: Playing with some stuff in the internal ;)

Interface 90%: Fighter interfaces are almost complete, one main hall done.

CB Animations: Few full length ones, and the rest are total crap...

Missions 25%: Chapter 1 GTVA is undergoing testing, Chapter 1 SOC is underway and the other chapters have a few missions done.

When we do release it'll be the GTVA Chapter 1. This will come with 60% of the mods missing the two new species which feature later on. Some SOC/EA ships that are not needed will be absent as well.

Ok I think I know how I'm going to do it, only one question remains, would you prefer the files in a set of installer programs or just in a set of self extracting rar files.
Either way is good for me :)

No no no! Whatever you do, don't waste all your hard work by not doing this last, oh so little, but oh so important step! Otherwise, it'll be the only thing people think about when they think of Inferno - every little bug that could and should have been fixed, but wasn't, and I know it deserves  better than that.

Definately smaller vps, so that uploading updates is not so painful.  Downloads don't matter to me, but I'll bet that there will be a couple of bugfixes thrown in at some point and I'll bet Woo'd prefer to upload a replacement to one little vp than to reupload the entire campaign.

Title: Downloading
Post by: SadisticSid on December 27, 2002, 05:03:40 pm
The best thing to do, I think, is make a multiple archive set using WinRAR or something - that way you'll get the benefits of good compression while keeping it in easy-to-download chunks for modem users. Also, if you don't want to put it on FilePlanet, I might be able to help out there. :)

Sid.
Title: Downloading
Post by: Woomeister on December 27, 2002, 05:08:41 pm
I use Winrar at maximum compression now. I would be insane to use Winzip for this :D

Well I have to put the inital version on fileplanet but I'm hoping to get it mirrored on as many sites as possible.

The main problem will be updating the files. I can't overwrite on fileplanet so I'll have to keep changing the links. That's why I'm trying to hold off while I assemble a team to do turret paths so I can do the new fighter and cb animations. If I can get all the mods 100% complete I'll never need to touch most of the packs again :)

I think I deleted it so I'm not uploading it again so close to a release.

It was removed because a certain individual broke into our private forum and tried stealing our files. I had to rename the staff files directory to stop them, and that pack was in that folder.

The reason it'll be going on fileplanet is we now have to use it for all public files.

I hate fileplanet more than all of you combined :p

Relax guys, FilePlanet is provided freely to us. Remember HLP doesn't pay GameSpy anything, so they can do whatever they want - and besides, with a little patience, FilePlanet isn't so bad. I'm aware that it's not crash-hot, but they're trying to provide a good (free) service, just like you are - so, live with it. ;)

The uploading isn't so bad. My avarage speed is 80 kb/sec (don't know about 56kers) But downloading is hell on earth - max 12 kb/sec with download accelerator. They should give project leaders free Fileplanet access, that'd make things easier for us.

Max upload at 2k max download at 4k from fileplanet. If the file fails you then have to rename it as you can't overwrite fileplanet files (last time I checked anyway)

My current INF data folder filesize compressed is 90mb, and it's still rising...
Title: Downloading
Post by: Ulundel on January 01, 2003, 08:11:10 am
Maybe you can send it to me some way...oh, that would require uploading too.

Max upload at 2k? Outch dude.
Title: Downloading
Post by: Woomeister on January 01, 2003, 08:16:01 am
I'd estimate a final compressed size of 150-200mb, and that maybe without single frame anis and low res textures :D

The 90mb is all hi res stuff.

2k is the max, it usually goes down to 1.3k on gamespy servers...

I'll sort something out later I suppose...

Well...good luck :)
Title: Downloading
Post by: Woomeister on January 01, 2003, 08:25:39 am
Heh I'll need it :D

My new fighter selection anis average at 3mb per ship for both resolutions, so 3*26 ships = 78mb at least just for those :D

If they compress to around 50% it'll leave say 40mb, so that's 130mb total without cb animations :D

I'm gonna have fun uploading this thing

Actually if everything goes to plan, the EA Final pack including all the EA capships, fighters, bombers and non combatants may be complete in a few hours. I've done 18 full fighter selection animations over the last two days, and only the Claymore Mk I is left for the EA. All the EA ships are pathed and considered complete so I may release it soon. :)

Don't forget - you guys aren't project leaders, I am. ;) (Or at least, I was... and will be, when I return full-time.) The hierarchy is... GS -> 3DAP -> HLP -> You guys. If they give that free access to anyone, it would be the actual GS staff (like the core staff of the Planets).

GREAT GOOGAMOOGA!

I won't be able to download it though :p stupid 56k modem :(

Yeah I could use your report, especially for spelling as that hasn't been checked for months :D

All the packs except the Shivan, SOC, Ancient and  missions are ready now.

It's a 60mb+ download without those and the 70mb of cb animations :D

With more packs compiled I can give a better estimate for the initial download size.

The current packs total nearly 100mb compressed, and 222mb uncompressed.

For a minimal download that's 51mb compressed, 140mb uncompressed.

Note that this is just for the mods and 1 chapter of cb animations, it does not include full and single cb animations for the remaining chapters, or any of the missions.
