Title: Tracing logins to an FTP...
Post by: Fineus on December 01, 2002, 12:44:21 pm
Hey all, a brief question. If I wanted to check who'd accessed an FTP folder in the previous day, what would I do to go about that? Many thanks...

what FTP client are you using?

FTP Explorer Version 1.00

Firstly, not a client, a daemon. Secondly, you'd need direct access to the actual (*takes a wild stab in the dark*) Gamespy servers, and that's presuming that the daemon is set to log old IP's, and that you don't mind sifting through thousands of logged FTP transfers...........

Er........

I'm fairly sure it'll be in text format or something though right? The only relevant logins I'm looking for have taken place today, some time during the afternoon GMT. It'd be a case of emailing GS for those files then - assuming they keep them?

They'll almost certainly log the FTP transfers for security reasons.

Just ask for the logs for HLP for that time-frame and they should be able to e-mail ya a text file of the logs.....Unless they decide to be dicks.

Shuddup, this time it's serious. My IT A level coursework, City of Light (the rendering site that's been in the making for a while now) was deleted earlier this afternoon. I'm trying to catch the little ****er that did it. This time there'd better be a good reason or it's going to get legal. Pictures are fine, this is something different.

The question isn't "Who is it?" it's "How did they get access?".

A couple, one an ex member of the community. And I know who he is and what his motives are. That doesn't mean I forgive him... if it didn't require any work to correct on my part I'd not care what anyone did to me. But since there's so much work involved in reconstructing a site with correct links and all (I've got to move it to a secure domain) I'm understandably pissed off. In time I'm prepared to happily set the community on him, sign him up to more ****e than he knows what to do with etc... for now though I just want to put a stop to this ****.

A nice little revenge tactic is to sign his/her/it's e-mail up the FFA (free-for-all advertising) pages. They end up with about 400 junk e-mails a day.

Anyway: Personally, I think it's *KABOOOOOM*

ARGH! My face! My face! My horrifically scarred face!!!

Meh, I don't rate this charachter as a hardcore threat, just someone with a few skills in the right areas. Like how to use an FTP program.

Besides, if he's hacking me he's hacking Gamespy...

It must be someone from the other place as that's your vet pic there too, or the other place has been hacked too. If that's the case thn it might be slightly easier to narrow the search down.

Edit: Never mind, it's the same image, you just link to it.

Depends. If he's got access through some dumbass (GS or HLP guy) giving out their FTP to him (believing he was someon else) or through some oversight on GS's part while dishing out FTP permissions, then it's perfectly legal.

But the laws of probability would suggest he has hacked the GS servers, in which case he's surfing on borrowed time.

Hmmmm. Might this be another side-effect of the forum permissions snafu?

Nah, the FTPs are kept separate of the forums - it's not that. Chances are he's using someone elses login. How he got it I don't know...

You sure it's your FTP account they're using? Don't Shrike and Setekh and people have full access to everything under /hlp ?

And as a side-note: E-mail's aren't exactly the most secure form of communications, nor IM for that matter.

Get GS involved with this, if he/she hacked into Thunders name...wait...a...minute...what if he posted?...while under Thunders name! You could find out a time slot for when he was under your name and for how long!

Then when you find the b****** call the cops...even better, send some Interplay agents after him...

*Future timeline, Hackers house*

*Hacker: "Alrighty, let's see what's happening in the white house!"

*Knocking at the Door*

*Hacker: "F*** OFF I'M BUSY HERE!"

*Door is smashed down, Interplay agents swarm into the house and surround the Hacker*

*Interplay Agent 413: "You have violated protocol number 744-931 "Invasion of Hard Light Productions Forum God Thunders Login". The sentence is death by HoJ.

*Thunder steps into the circle, many HLPers are seen in the background cracking knuckles and checking to see if their flamers still work*

*Thunder raises his HLP Hammer Of Justice, and brings it crashing down onto the Hacker*

*Hacker: AAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHH.....NOOOOOOOOOoooooooo!!!!!!!!

*A blinding light emits from where the Hammer hit the Hacker*

*As the light subsides, nothing but a smoldering pile of ashes is left of the Hacker*

*Thunder: "Ok, Now let's go and leave the "rest" of him to the Agents"

*The HLPers leave, and the Interplay Agents suck the ashes into a dirt devil and leave the house too*

*As they get into their black BMWs, the Hackers house Implodes into nothing*

*Interplay Agent 413: "Mission successful"

Ah....If only that could happen in real life....
